She watched him struggle with his words, fixating him with an impassive look. She wasn’t too bothered with the odd behavior that usually followed people figuring out what she was, as long as they didn’t stare too much.

“I understand…it can be surprising when you first find yourself here…in such a crowded place with so many aliens.” At least this place reminded her a lot of Earth, like she was used to.

“I’m Sapphire.” She waved her right hand, giving him a quick flash of her gem. “And what’s your name?”

“Wow that looks really really cool,” Hide gasped, eyes wide in amazement. “And it’s really nice to meet you, Sapphire.” He grinned. “I’m Hideyoshi, but my friends call me Hide.”

I wonder how long she’s been here... he thought, idly. Maybe I should ask?

“I only just got here a few weeks ago,” he said. “How about you?”

Finally, FINALLY, Daichi has enough cash to indulge in abundance of food. He’s sitting on a street bench, two boxed lunches on his lap, a rice ball in one hand and a jerky stick in another. By his thigh is a bag filled to the brim with microwavable ramen bowls of all sorts of flavors. It’s evident by the small sparkles of tears in the corner of his eyes and the large smile (barely visible through the puffed out cheeks) that he has found joy.

Wandering around the city had worked up an appetite in Hide, but he couldn’t do much about it. He was far from finding a job, much less even understanding how everything in this damn city worked. 

“Ugh,” he groaned when his stomach grumbled yet again. “This sucks...”

It didn’t help when he saw someone sitting on a street bench enjoying their overwhelmingly heavy lunch. Hide bit his lip, trying not to cry out in despair. He was so hungry... Maybe if I... hurry home, he thought desperately, I can try to sleep and ignore how I’m starving to death...

It felt odd, how used he got to the city in the short span of time he had spent here or maybe it was only for the sheer fact that he had met so many familiar faces. Hell wasn’t such a bad place when you were stuck there with people you knew. Walking through the streets that slowly started be form passages and paths he could memorise,  he was all of the sudden faced with a situation he would have loved to avoid. 

Despite being more than happy every time he spotted a familiar face in the crowd, that reaction was restricted to him spotting a ghoul in the crowd and not a human. Especially not this human. 

Renji had seen him a few times already, he used to come to Anteiku with Ken, they were good friends, but while he couldn't deny that Ken was a bit oblivious and slow at times, God bless his innocent soul, meanwhile his friends seemed to be blessed with wit and sharper senses. 

It would be the best to avoid eye contact, walk a little faster and hope that the human hadn’t spotted him yet, even better if he didn’t recognise him. Not that he spent much time behind the counter at Anteiku, the few times that he was in plain sight they seemed to be busy with other things anyway. So why was he even panicking in first place…? No way that he knew anything about him.

Hide had been in the middle of a self-pity party when he spotted the tall mystery man from Anteiku. He’d been walking, thinking about how everything seemed pretty much hopeless... He knew no one in this weird city. No one except Amon-san, and he seemed really busy. Plus, Hide didn’t want to look incompetent in front of his CCG superior.

That was when he saw Mystery Man.

Hide hadn’t seen him in ages. Not since those rare times he’d spotted him milling around behind the counter in Anteiku or near the Employees’ Only door when it was near closing time. Hide didn’t know his name, nor what his voice sounded like, but at this point, he was pretty much desperate for a friendly face.

“Heeey!” he called from across the street, just as the Mystery Man seemed to walk even faster away from him. “Heeey! Are you from Anteiku? Do you know Ken Kaneki?” He hurried along a pedestrian crossing, to catch up. “I’m his BFF, the loud and good-looking one! Do you remember me?”

“If it’s that easy for you to lose yourself, then I advise you to stay strong.” Amon remembered his first few months. It was jarring, and stress inducing. His sense of morality shifted every so often since ghouls weren’t the only threat he was facing, but also had to adjust to living in a multi-cultural-racial-species life. It took him a while to open up his mind to the idea of it, but a year later, he seemed pretty okay.

“Did the scientists give you an apartment number? Or just a district? Either way, I’ll escort you there safely.”

“Yeah, they gave me this,” Hide said, holding up the scrap of paper that read ‘p-1.’ “Thank you for this, Amon-san. I really needed some help.”

It was nerve-wracking, to say the least, walking down the streets of an city that Hide had never seen. He felt like a tourist, in the weirdest, most wrong way possible. Could you even feel like a tourist in this kind of situation? Well, he thought, at least I know a familiar face.

“Uhm,” he said tentatively. “If you don’t mind me asking, do you know anything... about how this city works? I mean... the scientists... Who are they, exactly...?”

Takatsuki Sen simply smiled and waved him off – it was the least she could do for a fan.

“Please, it’s no trouble at all.” While the waitress was there, she too ordered something, a simple slice of cake. “This place is quite nice.”

She sipped her drink as he gulped it, thinking that that would certainly sting later. Boys these days were just so impatient, weren’t they?

“Oh, only a few weeks…?” That felt a bit nostalgic now. “Truthfully, it is a bit surprising to me as well. Time certainly has flown in this city.”

Takatsuki Sen nodded, how understanding of her.

“It’s a lot to take in, I know; this city is as big as Tokyo…” And who knew what was lurking there.

“How did you get used to things?” Hide asked curiously, trying to ignore the lingering pain on his tongue. He held the cup tightly in his hands though. The warmth felt good against his cold skin. “Was it hard?”

“Alright, if you insist,” Hide pulled his jacket back on. “Man. It’s seriously pouring out today…” He shook his head as he peered out at the rain falling in sheets. “You must have really wanted that coffee to come out all this way, what with the forecast.” He grinned.

“Anyway… Where are you headed? I can walk you.”

“Yes, well, I thought it would warm me up.” She said, taking a sip. She really shouldn’t have gone out, though. All of the signs said it would storm, and she didn’t listen. She usually wasn’t one to ignore her own visions.

“I suppose I’m just going home now.” She pointed down the street in the right direction. “Thank you. You’re a nice human.”

“Human?” Hide made an O with his mouth. “You’re not...?” He bit the inside of his cheek, inwardly hating himself. He cleared his throat. “Sorry, that sounded pretty rude. I meant to say... uhm...” He groaned in frustration. Honestly, why was he at a loss for words now? He’d been in a world of man-eating ghouls mixing with humans for all his life. His best friend was one of them. Maybe it was the strange circumstances... The strange city he was in...

“I’m really sorry about that,” he said sincerely. “I’m just a bit confused, because I’m new around here...” He laughed and was glad he didn’t sound too flustered. “I guess I’m having trouble getting used to everything. Anyway... What’s your name?”

“Yeah,” he said. “I asked you to sign K—my copy of, er, the…” He wracked his brains a little. “The Goat… ah no, The Hanged Man? Sorry. My memory’s been all whacked up since I got here.” He laughed nervously, hoping that Takatsuki wouldn’t find him suspicious right off the bat.

There was a weird feeling tugging at Hide’s gut. That old instinct that told him that there was something or someone to be wary about. This was the same feeling he’d had about Rize, but… He couldn’t be sure and besides, his hunger was getting really distracting.

He sent Takatsuki an apologetic glance before waving down a waitress and asking for the cheapest coffee they had. After she bustles off with his order, he folded his hands together on his lap, uneasy for some reason he couldn’t fathom. He didn’t even notice when he started scratching his cheek as he spoke.

“So Takatsuki-san,” he said, “how long have you been in Hive City?”

Chuckling, Takatsuki Sen nodded.

“No need to fret, I completely understand.”

“I see so many people at those things, I’m a bit surprised myself that I can recognize your face. Oh, but, this old lady knows her stuff, you know.” What was an author without their memory, after all? 

Still smiling, Takatsuki Sen watched the boy from behind her round glasses. He was probably a recent arrival, wasn’t he? If so, then he was likely confused and concerned for his well-being… Really, so pitiable. 

“Are you hungry?” She could hear his stomach rumble. “Feel free to order more than just coffee, I frequent this cafe enough that the staff know my name. You can just put your order on my tab.”

Takatsuki Sen was just so nice, wasn’t she?

“Ah, I’ve been in this city for over a year now – and yourself?”

Hide felt his stomach grumble even louder at her offer. He blushed and felt Takatsuki’s eyes on him. Well, that was embarrassing...

“If you don’t mind,” he said. When the waitress returned with his coffee, he asked for a simple ham and egg sandwich. He turned to Takatsuki. “Thanks a bunch. You’re a lifesaver.”

He swallowed a mouthful of his coffee so fast he felt his tongue burn in complaint.

He smiled in content, however, as the warmth pooled in his stomach and began to spread to the tips of his fingers and toes. Ah. Much better.

“I just got here around a few weeks ago! It’s been pretty wild. Can’t imagine being here for over a year...” He shook his head. “I still don’t really understand what’s going on.”

In ancient Greek culture, Dikē (English translation: “justice”) was the goddess of justice and the spirit of moral order and fair judgement based on immemorial custom, in the sense of socially enforced norms and conventional rules. According to Hesiod she was fathered by Zeus upon his second consort, Themis. She and her mother were both personifications of justice. She is depicted as a young slender woman carrying a physical balance scale and wearing a laurel wreath. She is represented in the constellation Libra which is named for the Latin name of her symbol (Scales). She is often associated with Astraea, the goddess of innocence and purity.

I settled on Dike for Hide in particular because he is someone who throughout his time in the manga worked for a just cause. To him, it didn’t matter if you where human or ghoul or whatever. What mattered was the justice and fairness of the situation. Most especially, he thought of Kaneki and worked rather hard to be there for his friend in a way that was fair to him. Maybe its kinda weird, considering there are certainly other choices, but I thought it was an interesting option.

It was a rainy day when Hide saw the blue girl. The sight of her caught him by surprise but he didn’t really feel the need to ask questions. He’d been dumped into a strange city, after all. He didn’t doubt that he would be seeing lots of things here much stranger than man-eating ghouls.

In any case, the girl was running through the rain unprotected. Hide glanced up at his umbrella and decided it didn’t matter if it was too small for two people. He ran to catch up with her, and caught her by the wrist, holding out the umbrella. 

“Um, hey!” he said. “I thought you might need this… And, wow, your skin is really cold! Here, take my jacket too! A pretty lady can’t run around in the rain without some protection.” He started to pull his jacket off.

She should have foreseen this. There had been a fifty-fifty chance of rain, she saw it both on tv and in her future vision, but she risked it. She used her levitation and speed to get down the street and get her favorite hot coffee, but now it was pouring freezing cold rain. 

She’d been all warm inside from the drink, it reminded her so much of Ruby, but now she was freezing again, the beads of water on her skin were like ice.

“Oh…” She felt someone grab her arm as the water was halted under an umbrella. She turned to the human and smiled. 

“Oh, you can keep your jacket.” She assured him. Humans were much more sensitive to cold. “I can dry off and stay dry now that I’m under here…” In one quick flex of her body, all the water flew off of her and landed in a puddle by their feet. “Thank you again.”

Wandering around the city had worked up an appetite in Hide and his stomach grumbled in complaint at him. He put a hand on it, trying to quell the hunger pangs, but it was in vain. It didn’t help that he was passing by a café from which the scent of coffee and sandwiches made his stomach twist. 

“Just…” he muttered. “Just a little peek…”

He walked in before he could regret it and sucked in the delicious smells that surrounded him. Before he could take a good look at the cake display, something—or rather, someone—caught his eye. He froze.

“Hey…” he said, eyes widening in recognition. “Aren’t you… Aren’t you that author? Uhm… uh… oh right! Sen… Takatsuki?”

The tiny author looked up from her cup of tea and novel. To be greeted so directly, well, it wasn’t unfamiliar. Neither was the boy approaching her, his face stood out in her memory well enough. Ditzy as Takatsuki Sen might seem to some, the author’s memory was impeccable… Though, that bit of information was hardly free.

“Oh? Aha, yes, that’s me…”

With a pleasant smile, she beckoned him over, eyes quickly scanning him; he was fumbling around, so he was most likely new, and she definitely heard his stomach growl… Poor thing, she might have pitied him, was she someone capable of such a thing.

“Please, sit.”

“You look familiar, have you ever been to one of my book signings…?” 

Even if she didn’t know who he was, that hair style of his would certainly have stood out in her memory.

Hide was already getting used to seeing the weirdest things in Hive City. But nothing could have prepared him for what he saw on a certain Saturday afternoon.

He’d just come out of a convenience store with a meager dinner (he would seriously need to start looking for a paying job soon) and was on his way back home when he saw a figure dressed in black, whistling a tune and balancing on the metal rail separating the street from the side walk.

He frowned and picked up his pace, catching up with the figure. When he saw the stranger’s face, there was no denying who it was.

“T...Takizawa-san?”

Hide felt that a morning jog might be able to help him acquaint himself with the city better and so he scrounged up some running clothes before taking off from his apartment. He wondered briefly about bringing the plastic bat he’d seen lying near the entryway, but he shrugged, figuring that he wouldn’t be going anywhere too sketchy.

He jogged leisurely, at his own pace, which was much slower than usual today as he didn’t want to get very far lest he get horribly lost. He was pretty sure he’d still be able to find his way back by asking directions, but he was already getting kind of embarrassed. 

As he was passing what looked like an abandoned playground, he saw a man standing at its entryway. The first thing Hide thought of him was of his silver hair that caught the morning light. He was dressed for a morning jog as well and as Hide drew near, he looked like he had a sort of lonely look on his face... The kind of aching sadness that tugged at even the hearts of strangers.

Maybe it was because of his ethereal kind of beauty (he was seriously handsome, honestly, who was Hide kidding) but it made the scene almost tragic.

“Um, excuse me?” Hide asked in the best of his broken English. “Are you okay?”

“H-Hey!”

Hide spun on his heel, ready to stomp right back into the room he’d just come out of but something stopped him. Probably just a gut feeling, but he was sure that no matter what he did or said, there wasn’t any getting out of it. He typically went along with his gut feelings because they were right on the money most of the time. With a sigh, he faced the towering alien city one more time.

Glancing down at the piece of paper in his hand, he scratched his head. How the heck was he supposed to find apartment p-1 in this mess of streets anyway? And besides…

“Is this where you ran off to, Kaneki?” he wondered aloud.

A year upon setting foot into this city, Amon had taught himself how to tell if someone had just arrived for this ‘social experiment’. Usually it’s always someone looking lost either with a piece of paper in their hands, possibly from ‘orientation’. Though it’s not always right and it does lead him to such unexpected situations.

“Nagachika?” Like say finding someone from your world…again. Unable to process whether to be relieved or worried, he psyched himself up before approaching the lad. “You’re here. Did you just arrive?”

“Oh, Amon-san, you’re here too?”

Hide waved enthusiastically, relieved at the sight of a familiar face. “I don’t know why or how, but yeah I just got here,” he said, grinning sheepishly. “I was about to lose my mind trying to figure out what to do...” 

Honestly, if he had to, he would’ve been able to put together a makeshift plan of his own, but somehow, in this weird city, he felt completely disarmed. No doubt about it, he needed someone to show him the ropes, and who better than his old boss to do just that? He hoped he wouldn’t be too much of a burden, but if he didn’t get a helping hand now, he really would lose his mind.

He held up his piece of paper. “Could you... maybe help me find my way around?”
