the question -chris s
summary.. chris didn't think much of the question, until it was too late
⚠︎!!! death, mystery cause of the death, crying, flashbacks
the funeral has been so quiet and unreal, because the person the funeral was about, was the sunshine. chris is standing there, hot tears rolling down his eyes as matt comforts him.
nobody knew what doll was going through, not even chris, if he would have known she still would be here today.
he didn't know if he had done something wrong, if he was the reason why she did it, if he had known what he did he would have apologized, would have never done it again.
chris was playing fortnite with matt and nick, I had stopped scrolling on my phone, my thoughts taking over, chris doesn't know what I'm going to do next week, he just thinks I'm being extra attached to him
I sigh, turning to my side looking at chris, the way he's leaned back into his gaming chair, hands on his head, fingers interlocked, he's in the lobby with matt and nick after he got killed in his last match
doll- "chris" I say barley audible
chris- "yeah," I hear him say, not taking a glance at me
doll- "would you still love me as a rock?" I finally said, the words echoing in the room
chris looks at me, really looks at me, he probably thinks it's one of those questions, those questions where the girlfriend says "would you still love me as a worm"
chris furrows his eyebrows, confused by the question, confused where the question even came from, confused on what I meant by that
chris- "yeah... I probably will" he says
doll- "promise" she says, her voice sounding like it could crack at any moment, putting her pinky up
chris looked at her pinky, a small smile on his face, doll always does this, a pinky promise to know you actually mean it
chris- "pinky promise." he says interlocking their pinkys together
the day he stood by her tombstone felt unreal. it was unreal that he had lost his only thing he loved the most, the only person who knew how to cheer him up in seconds
with the wind brushing past, and rain dropping down from the sky, no one knew if chris had tears coming down his eyes or if it was the rain, but with the person he lost, it was clear it was both the rain and the tears
tracing his fingers over her name carved in stone, and suddenly loving a rock didn't sound imaginary anymore

"if the solution to the parabola is x-squared plus-"
The teacher's lecture faded to a dull hum in my ears. Again, why was this all important in the grand scheme of things? Unless I was going into something math related, I would probably never use this again. Plus, I already learned this some years back. I didn't want nor need a recap!
a gentle knock on the door broke everyone's attention, including mine. The secretary from earlier creaked open the door, scanning the class until her eyes landed on me
"Heather Henderson? If you could come with me please."
Either I was in trouble for what happened earlier or the police were interrogating me because of barb. Either way, it was a lose-lose situation. Nonetheless, I grabbed my bag and followed the lady out the hallway. The hallway was eerily empty, that was a first.
I mean, it made sense that no one was here, especially since an administration member was patrolling the halls. Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The feeling didn't wear off until we made it to the cafeteria. Officers Callahan and Powell were seated at one of the many tables my mother right across from them.
The secretary stopped at the door but beckoned me inside, going back to the office when I was halfway across the cafeteria
"Heather, sweetie, what's going on?" Mom asked, her hands gripping my bicep
"Mrs. Henderson, please, calm down," Powell begged. "Your daughter isn't in any trouble, we just need to question her about some shady activity that happened recently. Everything will make sense as time goes along!"
"Heather, I swear if you did something illegal I'll-"
"Mrs. Henderson, please!"
My mom's hand loosened, slowly moving to her lap. Callahan and Powell shared a look, but said nothing about it and started the interrogation
"Ms. Henderson, where were you on the night of tuesday, November 8th of 1983?" Callahan asked, his fingers interlocked together
"I was at steve harrington's house."
"ok, and were you alone with this steve harrington? Or was-"
"there were four others there," I rushed, feeling moms eyes burning holes in the side of my head. " Nancy Wheeler, Barbara Holland, Tommy Hagan and Carol Perkins were all there. We were just hanging out"
"could you explain, in detail, how the night went?"
"well, were just hanging out, messing around, when barb accidentally cut herself, she went to the bathroom, and that was the last time I saw her."
"did anything else.. strange happen?" Powell asked
"I saw something in the woods, like a creature."
"ok, and could you describe exactly what this 'creature' looked like."
"like a alien"
both officers waited for me to elaborate further, but when I didn't, Callahan promoted, "ok, what sort of alien?"
"tall, gray, the face could open up and it looked like a flower with teeth"
"and you said it looked realistic?"
"yes!"
Powell sighed, "you sure it's not someone in a halloween costume?"
"I know what my eyes saw that wasn't no costume, that creature looked very tall!"
"where were you when this creature came out?"
"sitting down on Harrington's front porch when it came out"
"alright, were you alone during this interaction with this creature or others that could verify this?"
"alone. I was alone"
"Oh? And why exactly would you be alone when someone had been reported missing just the day before?"
"well there were other people at the house. You're acting like I wandered around the woods waiting for the thing?!"
"that doesn't answer my question?" Callahan stated
I gave Callahan a look crossing my arms over my chest. I pondered for a second, trying to figure out the best way to tell them what had happened. At last, I sighed and admitted, "I was thrown into their pool. I wanted to go home but barb had driven Nancy and I over, and I wasn't going to walk in the dark with a loose creature or killer so I sat on the porch, waiting for barb to take me home."
"but barb never took you home, I'm assuming?" I nodded in response to Callahan's question. "So how exactly did you arrive home? Unless you stayed the night at Harrington's?"
"no, I didn't," I stated, feeling that burning feeling again. "The alien I saw freaked me out, so I booked it and I ran home."
"you and Ms. Wheeler returned to the Harrington's residence the next day to look for barb, correct?"
"correct"
Callahan and Powell shared another look, giving me the perfect opportunity to offer some advice.
"maybe you can check behind the harringtons house or-"
"we already checked there, Ms. Henderson," Callahan sighed. "There is no sign of barb, or this 'weird alien' creature you keep telling us about. We also couldn't recover Ms. Holland's car, leading us to believe that she ran away."
"Ran away?!" I blurted out before I could think.
"did she talk about that to you? Or anything related like that?
"No, no! Of course not! That's not barb! I'm telling you, that thing I saw took her!"
"Ms. Henderson, are you positive you saw a creature? Or was it just a hallucination of your imagination?"
Before I could respond, Callahan added, "was there any, say booze or weed involved that could've caused you to see things?"
"No, there wasn't" I lied
Powell looked at me for a second before he asked, "you were the girl that was shoved in that lake in South Bend a couple years back, correct?"
Scrunching my eyebrows together, I answered, "yes, but I don't see what that has to do with anything?"
"and you also say you were thrown into Steve's pool, correct?"
"correct," I verified, seeing where powell was going with this
"Ms. Henderson, did you experience any anxiety attacks after that happened? Or relive any trauma?"
I thought about what I felt last night, the feeling that something was going to prevent me from breaking through the surface, the suffocating feeling that I was going to die. "yes."
"trauma presents itself in many ways," Powell informed, his voice slow and calm. "Some people use humor while others keep their distance from loved ones. It's not entirely doubtful that the creature you saw was just a figment of your imagination, of your brain trying to process this trauma."
"so what you're saying is I'm actually starting to go crazy and I'm just seeing things? But I saw this exact creature yesterday, when Nancy and I were looking for Barb!"
"again, your brain is dealing with multiple things at once. You could have just seen an albino deer and mistaken it for this creature."
I pause for a minute before asking. "You really didn't find anything? No footprints, no remains, nothing?'
Both officers shook their heads. "Nothing."
Nothing, I know I didn't see 'nothing'. I saw footprints, I saw a creature. So where did it all go?
"is there anything else that happened that night that would be crucial in this investigation?" Callahan asked
"no, officer, there isn't."
Both officers lifted themselves up from the table before holding out their hands. While we were shaking them, Powell said, "school is about to end, so you might as well just head home. Thank you for your cooperation Ms Henderson. If anything else happens don't be afraid to let us know."
"of course, will do." I lied
"Mom, I already told you, I don't want to talk about it."
"Heather, barb is missing! Why didn't you tell me this earlier?"
"because I didn't even know she was missing until yesterday!" I answered, stepping past my mother and into the house. "Plus, with everything else going on, I figured it would be best to wait until everything died down."
"heather, honey-" mom gently gripped my shoulder, forcing me to face her- "you don't ever need to feel like that, ok? I want to know stuff like this, and I want you to talk to me about it. Dont think that because Dustin is going through something, you can't tell me anything, ok?"
"I know," I sighed. "I just- I don't know." The tears hit my eyes suddenly, yet mom didn't acknowledge them. Instead, she led me over to the sofa, sitting down across from me. Her comforting eyes were focused on my tear stained face, giving me the feeling that nothing could draw her attention away from me.
"that thing, Mom, I know I saw something," I choked, trying to control the lump in my throat. "I think it took barb, and I think it killed Will." Mom didn't say anything, encouraging me to go on. "I know she didn't run away. Barb would never run away." I say through choked sobs
I cried in my mom's arms rambling for another ten minutes, just telling her everything that had happened at Steve's party, from parking three blocks away to deciding to run home. When I was done, my mom herself looked like she was about to cry
"honey. Im so. so sorry." She muttered. Gripping my hand. "You don't have to keep everything to yourself, ok?"
"O-ok," I sniffed. Mom pulled me into a hug, the last of my tears flowing on to her shirt
"I need to get back to work," mom said pulling away from me, "but if anything happens, call me."
"alright," I smiled, wiping the tears from my eyes. Mom gave me one more quick hug before walking through the front door
I stayed on the couch, wondering what to do next, when I remembered my encounter with steve earlier. School had been over for almost thirty minutes, so I was sure steve was home. If not, I'd just break into his house and find my gun, wouldn't be the first I break into a home.
I took the five minute walk to Steve's house, carefully studying my surroundings for any sort of danger. A few times, I thought I heard something but it just turned out to be some cat or deer. No one was randomly wandering the street, and I only passed maybe three cars on the way. Yeah, Hawkins was a small, quiet town, but not this quiet. I picked up my speed, trying to get out of the eerie street.
At last, I arrived on the Harringtons' doorstep without thinking, I glanced to my right, trying to see if the gray alien was perched in the bushes, waiting for its next victim. Yet, nothing was there.
I took a deep breath, facing the intimidating double doors. Before I could stop myself, I knocked
I could hear footsteps approaching the door before it swung open. For a second, I was taken aback since I was expecting steve to answer, but I quickly shook it off and studied the man. He had brown hair dark enough to be considered black, paired with blue eyes. His face reminded me a little bit of Steve's features, but you could definitely tell the difference between the two
"hey, uhm, is steve around?" I asked, looking around the property. I may not like steve but damn this shit is nice
"are you steve's newest play thing?" The man spat, his arms folded tightly across his chest
"why, he talks about me a lot?" I chuckle
"it doesn't matter," he snapped. "Steve is grounded, meaning he can't go out and mess around. Goodbye." With that, the door was slammed on my face
"bitch" I muttered under my breath before knocking on the door again, barely a second later, the door swung open, the same man standing there.
"Listen baldspot, I'm not here to ask steve to hang out, steve has something of mine and I need it back." I said annoyed by how long I'm standing here
"why is steve's seventh girlfriend talking to me with this disrespect!"
"listen can I just come in and grab my shit, and leave!"
"what does he have that belongs to you? your v card?"
I huff in annoyance "no actually, it's none of your business!"
"it is because that's my son!"
"ok shouldn't you be out of town, I don't know 'cheating' on your wife with a co-worker instead of arguing with a seventeen year old?"
"honey who's at the front door?' a female voice is heard in the back
"one of Steve's girlfriends!" He shouts back
"well let her in, maybe steve and her can reschedule their date!" and even though I couldn't see her smile, I can just tell she was smiling while saying those words.
The man carefully studied me, squinting his eyes like if I was going to break, before he finally sighed. "Come in" he said with gritted teeth
I stepped into the household and into the organized living room. A blond haired woman sat on one of the sofas, a wine glass resting in her hands. Her eyes were already on me and when she saw my footsteps getting closer, she made eye contact with me and gave me a smile
"Steve!" The man yelled
"What?"
"Someone's here to see you!"
"Gimme just a minute!"
"that boy," he scoffed, standing in the middle of the living room
"hi dear, I'm afraid I've never seen you before," the woman admitted with a nervous chuckle, before crossing the room to shake my hand. "Im Mrs. Harrington. My husband over there is Mr. Harrington. And you are?"
"Heather Henderson," I greeted, releasing Mrs. Harringtons hand. "It's so great to meet you."
"Heather Henderson?" The woman repeated. "I swear, I've heard that name before."
"oh?" I asked raising an eyebrow before speaking, "steve talks about me?" I smirk
"well of course he speaks about you, you're his girlfriend after all, I can tell, steve chose a good one," she blinked
"he talks about all his many girlfriends to us like that, so don't feel special!" Mr. Harrington quietly mumbled before he made direct eye contact with me, smiling big before a small chuckle comes out of his lips
I gave Mr. Harrington a look before annoying his comment "uhm actually no me and steve are just "friends"." I say giving a sly smile
"oh please, that's what they all say, I said that twenty three years ago to my husband and look at us now!" She chuckles
"seriously we're not a couple, we're like partners in the same class" I say giving her a weird confused look "just classmates nothing more." I add
"Steve!" Mr. Harrington hollered frustration growing
"I'm coming! I'm coming, jeez!"
Steve came bolting down the stairs, only noticing me after he got to the bottom. He looked confused, but quickly hid it when he noticed his parents
"Oh, uh, Heather, what are you doing here?" Even though steve had said my first name before, i don't want him saying it ever again.
"I'm here to pick up something that belongs to me." I raised an eyebrow and when steve looked at me with a dumb look I sighed. "My textbook, I let you borrow it for biology?"
"oh, uh, yeah, I'll grab it for you." He offered, already starting to run back up the stairs.
"I'll come with you!" I stated, not wanting to be left alone with his parents for another second, if he disagreed with me he didn't show it because he continued running up the stairs
"that was some lame excuse!" Mr Harrington yelled behind us. "After five minutes, I'm coming in!"
I followed steve into the room, ready to grab my stuff and go, but only to be threshold. He went over his nightstand and opened a drawer, pulling out my flashlight and gun. I held my hands out, ready to take them, but steve kept them back
"C'mon harrington, you heard daddy, five minutes" I teased
"promise to never say anything about this," steve begged
My brows furrow together. "What?" I then quickly came to the realization and smirked. "Oh yeah, of course I won't say anything about this especially your mom saying 'you talk about me a lot!" I chuckle the biggest grin on my face
Steve's cheeks turned pink "uhm anyways, whatever happened these last five or ten minutes didn't actually happen." He says nodding his head
"pfft please like I want anyone knowing I was at your house," I reply, my patience starting to wear thin. "Now give me my stuff back!"
"You never came to my house, and you never met my parents. Ok?" He repeats
"ok, and you never had my gun cause i dont want you to flip this story of you having my gun to tommy thinking it was yours and you thinking you sound badass"
steve huffs before speaking. "pinky promise?" Steve stuck out his pinky, waiting for me to take it
"Really? What are we, kindergartners?"
"pinky promise?" Steve repeated
begrudgingly, I mumbled. "Pinky promise."
"you have to use your pinky"
I reluctantly wrapped my pinky around his and offered a quick shake, immediately detaching it afterwards. I grabbed the gun and flashlight, holding them close to my chest.
"enjoy being grounded," I taunted, giggling even. Walking out from his room. I raced down the stairs, giving a friendly smile to Mrs. Harrington and grabbed the handle of the front door.
"well, that was quick," Mr Harrington remarked, sounding somewhat surprised
"oh please, last longer than you ever could" I said slamming the door shut behind me
I'm about three blocks away from the harringtons house when all of a sudden a car pulled up right beside me, forcing me into the ditch besides the road. I rolled my eyes and spat, "you've got plenty of room over there, use it or I get my gun and I shoot-"
"Get in!"
I reached for my gun, and glanced at the driver, immediately my anger turns into relief but relief turns into me yelling at the familiar driver
"what's wrong with you, you could've got shot, nance" I say hopping into the passenger seat, the gun and flashlight in my hand
"where are you taking me?"
"the funeral home," nancy responded, speeding down the road. "I found something." Nancy recounted the story piecing together a torn up photo of barb and realizing that the same creature we saw at Steve's was in that picture
"do you still have that photo you showed me?" Nancy concluded. I touched my jacket pocket, feeling the lump from the photo
"yeah, but what does this have to do with the funeral home?"
"Jonathan's most likely helping plan Will's funeral. He's also the one who took that photo. If anyone besides us saw that thing, it'd be him
"are we really sure we want to do this? I mean, his brother was just found, he's probably under a lot of str-"
"that's exactly why we do this! This could give him a distraction from all the chaos," nancy assured
"that's not how it works nance, not even close"
Nancy shrugged, "worth a shot!"
We walked into the funeral home, both of us trying to preserve the stillness. We heard a soft voice down the hall, and decided to follow it
"...over here, we have copper and bronze," the same voice said. Nancy and I appeared in front of a room displaying caskets. Jonathan noticed us, and glanced at the man
"can you just.. give me a second?" He stammered
"of course," the man nodded, taking a step back. Jonathan walked towards us, his face full of pain and fatigue. I immediately felt bad for bothering him and gently touched Nancy's arm
"nancy. He looks tired"
Before nancy could respond, Jonathan greeted, "hey."
"hey," nancy and I echoed
"your mom, um.. she said you'd be here," nancy added. "I just- can we talk for a second?"
"yeah of course," Jonathan assured. He guided us out of the room and down the hallway to some padded benches. He and nancy took a seat while I stayed standing
"barb is missing," nancy informed, "and I found something in that photo you took of her," she pulled out a taped together photo of barb and handed it to Jonathan. "Is there anything with the camera that could've made this show up?"
I leaned over the photo and studied the corner, where the alien was standing. Rolling my eyes, I sighed, "nancy we saw this! We know it's-"
"it looks like it could be some kind of perspective distortion," Jonathan interrupted, glancing back up to nancy and me, "but I wasn't using the wide angle. I don't know."
"it showed up in a photo you took of heather, too," nancy informed. Hesitantly, I took it out and gave it to Jonathan to study
"again, I don't know. Something could've been wrong with the film that it just made this show up. Im sorry." He handed the photo back to me, more pain written in his eyes
"are you sure you didn't see anyone else out there?" Nancy pushed. I shot her a glare, but she completely ignored me
"No, I mean she was there for one second, and then... Gone. I figured she bolted."
"the cops think that she ran away,"
"but they don't know barb." I enlightened
Nancy ignored me still talking to Johnathan. "we went back to Steve's and thought we saw something-"
"we did see something nancy!" I yelled, getting tired of her doing her shit act. "Maybe you don't know it, but I know I saw something! I know I saw some alien or, or creature, or someone in a costume in the fucking woods!"
Jonathan glanced up at me, trying to process what I had just said
I sighed, "sorry for bothering you." I say already turning around
"we shouldn't have come to bother you," nancy admitted, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "I'm sorry."
nancy had started to catch up with me, walking towards the door when Jonathan blurted out, "what'd it look like?!"
Nancy and I both turned, nancy asking, "what?"
"this man or creature you saw in the woods," he repeated, looking at me. "What did it look like?"
"like some weird alien! Like he- like he didn't have a-"
"like he didn't have a face?" Jonathan finished.
"Exactly!" I concluded, my brow furrowing. "Have you seen it?"
"Not exactly"
"I just got home from school" I groaned. "Why do I have to go back?"
"because I need the darkroom," Jonathan stated, holding the front doors open for us. "Unless you know some place that offers a darkroom with no charge?"
I ignored Jonathan and walked into the building, Nancy close behind me. Jonathan cut in front of us, trying to lead us to the darkroom.
As we were passing the gym, all three of us glanced inside, eager to know what was going on. The basketball team was practicing, the low thud of basketballs hitting the wooden floor echoing out to where we were. One of the boys glanced out to us before coming over
"hey, wheeler, where's your boyfriend?" He asked, the basketball tucked under his arm
Baffled, nancy replied, "I don't know, I haven't seen him since school got out."
"he's grounded," I dully answered. The boy shifted his attention to nancy to me, a smirk breaking on his face
"Oh, I see harrington's got something on the side," he laughed, i had rolled my eyes, while he was going back into the gym, leaving the us three alone
"something on the side?" Jonathan quoted
"how'd you know that?" Nancy asked
"harrington had talked to me during lunch and asked me not to say anything about the beers at his party" I lied
"okay but how do you know he's grounded" she asked again
"I don't, but I know his parents aren't dumb enough to fall for Harrington's lies"
"and how would you know?"
"listen nance would you believe a spoiled rotten, daddy's money, asshole like steve?" I trailed off... "Oh wait you do!" I answered for myself
"that wasn't the question though" nancy said shaking her head
"really because you would have known if you weren't flirting with jona-"
"hey guys, we're here." Jonathan interrupted, opening the door and walking in the room, letting the red light spill into the hallway, he peeked inside, then beckoned us to follow him
"this is where you spend your lunch?" I asked, not deciding if I liked the room or not
"i mean, yeah, I'm doing something I enjoy," Jonathan shrugged, going over to a weird machine. He took the picture from nancy and placed it on some glass. Nancy stood next to him, her elbow propped up on the table
"and you are?"
"brightening. Enlarging," Jonathan answered
"Hmm.."
I looked over Jonathan's shoulder, eager to know what was going on.
"did your mom say anything else?" Nancy asked. "Like, um, where it might have gone to, or-"
"no, it just came out of the wall," Jonathan interrupted. The machine dinged, prompting him to remove his equipment and grab the undeveloped photo. Lightly pushing past us, he placed it in a tub of liquid, fully submerging it
"how long does that take?" Nancy asked
"not long."
A silence fell over us, nancy quizzed, "have you been doing this awhile?"
"what?"
"photography?"
"he's been doing it ever since I moved here, three years ago," I offered, leaning against the table. "Remember that photography class we took together in middle school?"
"yeah," Jonathan smiled, no doubt remembering the fun times. "I guess I'd rather observe people than, you know-"
"talk to them" nancy finished
"I just took that class so I graduated middle school," I laughed. "Definitely different than why you took it."
"I know it's weird," Johnathan admitted
"No!" Nancy defended
"no, it is. It's just, sometimes, people don't really say what they're really thinking. But you capture the right moment, it says more."
"what was i saying?" Nancy asked. I slightly cringed, remembering the photo that Jonathan took of her. What could she be saying at a time like that?
"what?"
"when you took my picture?"
Jonathan glanced at the table while shaking his head, "I shouldn't have taken that. I shouldn't have taken that one of you either heather. Im sorry. It's just-"
"that's it!" I interrupted, noticing the developed photo. "That's the thing we saw!"
The thing was in much more detail than I thought, but I could still spot the similarities, like the faceless head and the prominent ribcage
"my mom, I thought she was crazy," Jonathan admitted in a whisper, "cause she said "that's not Will's body. He's still alive',"
"And if he's alive-"
"then barb is too," Jonathan finished
"wait, wait, so that body they pulled from the lake, the one that we all thought was Will's, isn't a real body?" I asked, still trying to comprehend everything
"I- I guess it isn't," Jonathan agreed
"why would somebody just plant a fake body? And especially of a twelve year old boy?"
"I don't know, but there's no good motive for something like that," nancy added
"So where's Will? And where's Barb?"
"Again, we don't know, but I'm sure this thing has the answer," Jonathan said, pointing the monster. "We need to find it"

"Nancy!"
nancy whirled around, her expression softening when she saw me. she stopped. waiting for me to join her before resuming her walk. "have you seen barb?" I asked, not giving her a chance to say hello
" no, that's actually what I was just doing. I'm going to call Mrs. Holland and see if barb managed to get home. hopefully she knows something"
I followed nancy to the phone booth. both of us walking briskly, she picked it up and put in a few quarters, dialing the holland's number. we waited about five seconds before someone on the other end of the phone said something inaudible
"Hi, Uh, Mrs. Holland, it's nancy?"
Mrs holland said something, to which nancy responded, "good, I'm good!"
wanting to know everything going on, I stood next to nancy, my ear pressed against the back of the phone. "Um, I was just wondering, uh, is barb there?" nancy asked
"Mmmm... No, she hasn't come home yet," Mrs holland informed
"but she did come home, after the vigil, right?"
"no, she said she was staying with you last night,"
I squeezed my eyes shut, thinking we were screwed. mrs holland was going to see right through our lie, and then call the cops, and even more people were going to freak out, and-
"right! Yes, she did, sorry," nancy lied, quickly covering our tracks. "I meant, did she come home this morning? I think she left some textbooks, and she was going to pick them up,"
"oh, um, no, I haven't seen her." my heart dropped to my stomach, something had happened to her
"you- you know what? I just remembered she's at the library." nancy stated
"nancy will you have her call me as soon as you find her?"
"yep, will do! sorry to bother you" nancy put the phone back in its spot, her face twisted up in concern
"I'm going to look for her ," I stated. "you coming?"
"i can't, I'm going to the game with steve"
I stopped and turned to her cocking my eyebrow. "Nancy, our best friend is missing. and you're worried about a date?"
"look, we don't want others to know and freak out, right? If I just cancel my date, right after and ask people 'have you seen my bestfriend' people would start to suspect"
"nancy, I need help-"
"and I promise I'll come help, as soon as the game is over, it should only be about an hour or half an hour, ok?"
"what the hell nance? do you not get it? barb is missing because of us! because of you!" you spit. "If you hadn't slept around with steve or been with him at all none of this would ever had happened!"
"why are you getting so mad at me? just because you don't like steve and I'm dating him doesn't mean it's my fault?"
"yes it does!" you huffed out a laugh. "if you weren't dating a douche like him or hangout with his douchebag friends, barb would still be alive and with us!"
"it's not my fault I was having a great time!"
"I can tell, while harrington was screaming 'nancy' in pleasure, barb was screaming 'nancy' in horror!" you yelled. " he's corrupting you!"
"it's not my fault steve threw you into the water like ethan dugray did when you were fifteen!" nancy shouted
you flinched at the words choice she used. "What?"
nancy realized what she just said. "Heather"
"No, no, no, no." you huffed. "fuck you nance, I trusted you with that shit!"
"I didn't mean to say it" nancy firmly said
"really? because you knew that would hurt me!"
"I promise I didn't mean it, it's just-"
"forget it nance" you turn away from her. "I want my stuff out of your car right now!" you yelled while walking away
nancy sighed. we strolled out to her car in uncomfortable silence. you and nancy never argue but if you do it's usually dumb stuff. you didn't get it, steve over barb? her own friend. just for this stupid date, steve is really changing her and not for the best. before we could cross the parking lot to nancy's car, I noticed a group of people standing close to us
I quickly scanned them. tommy, carol, steve and this girl in my grade named nicole were all standing around, looking at... jonathan. I immediately forgot what I was doing before and headed towards the group, nancy followed closely behind
"what are we doing?"
I pointed to the group and said, "if I had to take a guess, I would say that steve is harassing jonathan, and with all the stupid things he's going through, i would be an idiot to let that slide!"
the group didn't take notice of us until nancy asked. "what's going on?"
"here's the starring lady!" tommy mocked
"what?"
I glanced at jonathan, hoping he had some sort of answer, his eyes were fixed to the ground while his body shifted between his two feet. that definitely wasn't jonathan behavior
"this creep was spying on us last night," carol answered, giving jonathan one of her signature glares. my eyes slightly narrowed, confused by what I was hearing. "he was probably gonna save this one for later!"
carol handed a photo over to nancy, who's eyes widened with shock, I looked over her shoulder, my jaw dropping open. it was a photo of nancy through steve's window, which is creepy enough in itself. but what made it worse was the fact that nancy was undressing herself. my eyebrows scrunched together in confusion, disappointment, and anger
I knew jonathan was having a rough time, but taking pictures of girls undressing was overstepping the line. "see, you can tell that he knows it's wrong, but... man. that's the thing about perverts. it's hardwired into them," steve spat, brushing any dust off jonathan's shoulder. it would've been a friendly gesture in a completely different situation, but now mocking his action. "you know, they just can't help themselves."
steve started ripping up the picture he was holding, scowling at jonathan the entire time. tommy laughed, and for once in my life I didn't stand up for jonathan, infact I wanted harrington to rip up every. single. photo jonathan had taken last night, and I wanted to help him
"so, we'll just have to take his toy, away!"
"no, please not the camera," jonathan begged. he looked at me for reassurance, but I looked at steve. I wasn't sure what I thought of jonathan after this, anymore, but it definitely wasn't pride. when he saw I wasn't going to do anything, he surged after steve, ready to grab his camera, but tommy shoved him back
"no, no, wait, wait, tommy, tommy... it's ok," steve assured, holding out jonathan's camera. "here you go, man"
jonathan reached forward to grab his camera, but as soon as his fingers brushed the object, steve dropped it. the crack as the camera smashed into pieces echoed in the air, louder than it should've been. "C'mon let's go the game's about to start" steve started to walk off with carol and nicole behind him, tommy was with them, but stopped when he reached me. he shoved a couple of pictures of me
"there for you, henderson!"
even though I never did anything last night, I was still worried to see what jonathan had gotten a picture of. nevertheless, I studied the pictures. this one was taken while I was sitting on the porch, not to long after steve had thrown me into the pool. the towel was wrapped around my shoulders and the beer was in my hand as I waited for barb...
barb. I was supposed to be looking for barb, not studying pictures someone took of me last night. I folded them up and shoved them in my jacket, glaring at jonathan before speaking, "just because you're going through something doesn't mean you can do weird shit like this and get away with it!" before I walked away
nancy was long gone by now, following the group as they went to the game, meaning I truly was on my own for the entire time, I shouldered my bag and walked towards the harrington's house, hoping I'd find something
"barb!"
my voice was hoarse from screaming for the past hour. I'd combine through these woods at least twice, yet there was still no sign of barb, no trodden down bushes, no clothing articles, heck there weren't any footprints, either! that was definitely the weirdest part, I couldn't find any from that weird monster either. I mean, I would've expected that to leave something behind, but nothing was out of the ordinary
maybe I really was drunk and my trauma did do something to my vision, hopefully that's what happened and barb was just hiding. still, I continued to search
"Barb,?" a familiar voice called
"well. look who finally decides to show up!" I bitterly said. walking towards the source, finding nancy aimlessly wondering near steve's pool
"barb!" she called
"Nancy?"
nancy turned to me, her expression almost hopeful. her face fell when she realized it was me
"No! it's not barb!" I snapped
"I see that. have you found anything?"
"No!" I sighed. "why are you here though?"
"what do you mean? barbs my friend.. I- I'm looking for her!"
"all of a sudden?"
"Wha-?"
"I thought you were harrington, huh?" you huffed
"Yeah well, I wanted to help you find barb!"
"Why?"
"she's my friend!"
"that's not what you were saying at school!"
"okay well I didn't mean it!"
"but you meant that ethan dugray sentence!"
"for the last time, I said I was sorry?"
"and for the last time, you still said it!"
"Look! I'm sorry ok! please I screwed up"
"Why. Are. You. Here. Nance?" I firmly stated
"to look for-"
"Nancy!" I shouted. " What do you not understand! Why. Are. You. Here?"
nancy sighed before speaking "I knew you were looking for barb here, and I came to say I'm sorry!"
"is that all?"
"yes!" she answered. "I also found barbs car where it was last night but not her"
something rustled behind me, breaking our conversation. I whipped my head back and stared, trying to find what had caused it. anxiety crept into my chest as I thought about the thing last night
"you heard that too, right?" nancy whispered. I nodded
in the corner of my vision, I caught something long and gray sprinting past us. my head snapped towards it, instantly recognizing it. I didn't even say anything to nancy, instead I grabbed her hand and ran. trying to put us much space between us and that monster
"Heather! Heather, stop!" nancy yelled. I ignored her, and continued to run
"Heather!" she twisted her hand out of my grasp, quickly catching my breath
"what was that thing?"
I glanced up at nancy, my hands planted on my knees with my chest heaving, "i-i don't know"
"you're not telling me something," she stated, her arms folded across her chest. how was she not out of air?
"you're right!" I admitted. "I didn't tell you everything because I didn't know if I was seeing things right. but after seeing that alien, everything makes sense." I recounted the story of what happened, how that monster had confronted me on steve's porch but didn't follow me. when I was done, nancy didn't appear skeptical
"so you think that thing has something to do with barb's disappearance?
I nodded, "I'm almost positive. and I think it has something to do with will, too"
"how do you know we aren't just seeing things? like, what if that was just an albino deer?"
"Nancy, I've seen that same thing twice, now. I don't think my eyesight would deceive me twice. plus you saw it too."
nancy sighed, " yeah, I guess."
my mind suddenly got an idea, I pulled out the photos tommy had given me, specifically the one I saw before. I ignored my frozen figure and glanced at the background, searching for anything out of place
"there," I pointed. nancy looked down at the picture, her eyes focusing on my finger, underneath my finger was the alien, exactly as I remembered. tall, gray and faceless. Oh, and terrifying. I forgot to mention that
"but what is it?"
"no idea," I admitted, folding the paper back up and shoving it back into my jacket. "I'm going to find it, though, and kill that son of a bitch!"
"me too!" nancy added, looking me in the eyes. "we are gonna find barb and will. and kill that bastard!"
I offered nancy a satisfied smile, beginning to walk away, when I noticed nancy wasn't following me, I stopped and scrunched my eyebrows
"you coming?"
nancy stood there, her eyebrows scrunched in thought
"Nancy?"
"that- that thing. let me see it"
I pulled out the photo and handed it to nancy, confused about what she wanted. she gripped the photo, her hands shaking tremendously
"did you see if that thing has teeth?"
"uhh-"
"yes or no"
"yeah, yes, it has teeth"
"what if, that thing killed barb?"
chills raced up my spine, processing what nancy had told me. that thing did seem aggressive, but maybe it was just hungry-
no, no, I wasn't going to let that thought go any further. I plastered on a smile and lied. "I'm sure she's fine. I mean, looks can be deceiving, it might've just been curious"
"yeah, curious if barb tasted good or not?" nancy snapped
"hey, hey. nancy we need to stay positive, ok?"
"weren't you positive will was just going to school early?"
my mouth dropped open, feelings of betrayal appearing in my mind. I glared at nancy before speaking. "and weren't you positive that harrington hadn't told the whole school?" I yelled before walking away
nancy flinched at the words I said before she spoke again "it's just the truth!" she yelled.
"same with harrington's lies!" I yelled back and continued walking
"Heather!"
my hand gripped the cold gun, making my skin feel like it was glued to the steel, my other hand was swinging the flickering flashlight around. looking for any clues of the weird monster, the bright light landed on a trail of indents in the ground. I stopped to get a better look
the tracks resembled a distorted hand, with unnaturally long fingers that ended with a deeper dent towards the end, something glistened at the bottom. I grazed my fingers on it, pulling them back when I realized it was wet and sticky. disgusting
I stood up and walked down the path, trying to find where the path ended, I had maybe walked a few feet before something breathed down my back. I whirled around and swung my gun, the cold steel colliding into something, a loud crack echoed in the air before someone groaned
"what the- harrington?!"
"yeah, it's me henderson, what did you hit me with?" steve groaned. I flashed my flashlight in his face, noticing the irritated mark on his left cheek
"are you stalking me!?" I accused, completely ignoring his question
"no, actually, I noticed you snooping around my property and wanted to scare you, what are you doing here? and can you please lower this stupid light?" he demanded, his eyes squinting as he shoved the flashlight towards the ground
"i was- uh looking for will," I lied, thinking about what nancy had said earlier. "I wasn't snooping, either. it's called being a detective"
"no, I think it's called snooping," steve snapped
I rolled my eyes and spat, "well, since we've settled that matter, I think im just going to go."
I began walking back in the path when steve blurted out. "why were you scared yesterday?"
feinging confusion, I turned around and raised an eyebrow. "what?"
"last night, at my party, why were you freaking out about getting thrown in my pool?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," I snapped, swinging the flashlight back and forth
steve walked closer to me, his face set in determination before stating, "bull. you fidget when you lie. you know exactly what I'm talking about."
you were stunned he knew that. stunned he knew you fidget when you lie. but even more mad when he brought it up. "how'd you-"
"oh c'mon hev, don't act like we weren't friends in seventh!"
"and let's not act like you left me during freshman year!" you answered. "you left me for fame and popularity with carol and tommy during ninth grade! and I'm just going to pretend I'm fine?!"
"well I thought you were?"
"well I wasn't, harrington. I don't know if you knew this but my life was a hell hole during freshman year! I had someone trying to kill me who I trusted, I was bullied by my only friend and you never asked me you left me!!" you yelled
steve flinched at your words, hurt written all over his face. "hev, I'm sorry. I know that was a real dick move of me-"
"dick move? you still are one! you're corrupting my friend, barb is now missing all because you wanted nancy to pleasure you and i just told you my personal stuff and I don't even trust you, which obviously I shouldn't because you're going to use that against me and bully me again. I blurted. "but face it harrington. I'm not that same fifteen year old girl who is going to run back to her mother and cry on her shoulder!"
"look I'm sorry okay, I was a dick and still am one but ever since sophomore year, you've only referred to me as 'harrington' never as steve. and when you did you call me steve, you looked terrified. and then, you got out of my pool almost instantly and when I gave you a towel and a beer you said you hated me and went home after that. "Why?"
"because, harrington, trauma is trauma and water is water"
"what is that supposed to mean?"
"gosh harrington you're so dumb, you'll figure it out when you matured enough"
"but I'm mature enough"
"are you always this nosy? or are you just feeling particularly annoying tonight?"
"no, I'm just curious."
"nosy"
"curious"
"nosy. and how did you know I fidget when I lie?" I brought up
"we were best friends, hev" he stated. "we did everything and anything together, nothing could have stopped us"
"yeah we 'were' now you're just some person I hate with my guts" you say, trailing off. "but I don't remember telling you that."
"you didn't I just figured it out on my own. context clues" steve said, hands on his hips giving you a small but genuine smile
"wow harrington being smart for once!" you said voice laced with sarcasm. "you know since we're confessing" trailing off "...I hated how-.. how we had some good memories, but you being popular and famous around the school did stop us."
harrington chuckled. "uh-huh." steve answered. "kinda sad it's over" he said, his face guilty
you looked at him to see if this was real, harrington looked sad, he apologized and you both reminisce through the old days. the good ones. as much as you would've loved to laugh at harrington and make a snarky comment, you couldn't. you didn't
"yeah well, maybe when this is all over we can hang or something" you say giving harrington a sly smile
police sirens cut through the air, cutting off the "moment". I whirled towards the road, catching bright flashes of blue and red. I racked my brain, trying to remember what was down the road. my eyes widened as I realized where the police were going
"sattler quarry," I breathed, panic hitting my chest
"what?" steve interrupted
I completely ignored steve and ran towards the road, catching sight of three police cars whipping around the corner. I cursed aloud before sprinting after them, praying that it was just a false alarm, or that someone was playing a cruel joke, or that this had nothing to do with the disappearance
"henderson!" steve yelled behind me. "Wait, what's going on?!"
I wanted to turn around and scream at him, tell him I had bigger problems to worry about then trying to fill him in on what's going on between me and my brother's problems, but I didn't want to waste a second. I ran faster, ignoring the footsteps trailing behind me. about five minutes later, I arrived on absolute chaos
people were crowded around the mouth of the lake, red and blue lights decorating the trees and the ground, I pushed through the crowd, my heart breaking when I saw the figure
"Will," I whispered, tears springing to my eyes. I wanted to run and see him, but noticing all the cops and people stopped me from making a move
"henderson, what-" steve's sentence abruptly ended once he noticed what I was looking at. "Oh sh-"
"hold these," I ordered, noticing lucas and dustin. I shoved my gun and flashlight at steve before sprinting over to them, blinking away tears. I wrapped my arms around both of them and buried my face in dustin's hair
"that can't be will," lucas muttered. "she said he was alive."
"who said will was alive?" I asked, pulling away to study the duo's faces
"just- just someone from school," dustin responded, his eyes casted towards the ground. suspicion gnawing at my gut, but i ignored it. right now, lucas and dustin needed support, not interrogation
"where's mike?" I questioned, suddenly noticing the wheeler boy missing
"he left already." lucas replied
"Where is h-"
"Lucas!" a feminine voice called interrupting me. us three turned our attention over to mrs. sinclair who was quickly making her way over to us
"oh sweetie," she cooed, pulling lucas into her embrace. she noticed us, and gestured for us to join them. dustin and I complied, I wasn't going to break down. not yet, anyway
"what was steve harrington doing there?"
"What?" I asked, turning my attention to dustin
"steve harrington. he was there"
"oh, he just decided to follow me," I answered, not too far from the truth
"were you hanging out with him?"
"me? hanging out with harrington" I snorted a laugh. "you are funny, thinking imma hang with daddy's money harrington over there, he was following me."
"like a stalker?"
"like a stalker."
dustin and I arrived at our house after a ten minute walk from the lake, dustin was about to do his own thing when I pulled him into a hug
"hey, i- I'm here for you, if you need anything," I whispered, tears beginning to flow down my face. dustin broke down in my embrace, his hands gripping the back of my shirt. I pulled him closer to me, my shirt quickly becoming wet, I ignored it and continued to hug dustin
after a minute or two, dustin had pulled away from me, his eyes completely bloodshot and soaked with tears. I gave him a comforting smile
"we'll get through this, ok?"
"ok," he sniffled, his eyes looking towards the ground
"I'm going to go take a shower," I informed gently touching his shoulder. "mom should be back in a few minutes, ok?"
I waited for dustin to get in his room before I went to my own, grabbing my pajamas, I then went back down the hall and into the bathroom, turning on the hot water. I stood under the shower head. doing nothing but thinking
will byers was dead. what more could I have done? maybe, if I hadn't gone to steve's stupid party, I could've found him. I could've saved him. he was probably terrified the last few moments of his life. why couldn't I have been there for him? I leaned my head against the tile, more tears flowing out. what did this mean for barb then? does this mean she was dead, too? was she also somewhere, in that lake, quietly. waiting to be found? my head began to throb with an excruciating headache
I quickly washed my hair, wanting to get out of the shower and in my bed, as I trudged into my room, the phone rang, the loud brinngg doing nothing to help my headache. I picked up the phone and mumbled, "hello?"
"heather, this is nancy, I wanted to apologize for the whole barb thing and the ethan dugray thing, I never should of said that. it was so wrong in my part and-"
"no, nancy, you're right," I sighed, my voice beginning to crack. "I think something happened to barb, just like something happened to will. what if she's suffering right now? what if-"
"Heather" nancy interrupted, her voice calm. "I'm not here to talk about barb. I'm here for you. I'm here to say sorry and make things right. are you ok?"
"No," I choked, a lump forming in my voice
"do you want to talk about it?"
"No, not tonight. I still need to process everything. thanks though,"
"if you need to talk, you have my number" nancy stated, the quickly added, "oh, and I'm sorry about what I said earlier, in the woods, that was real shitty of me, I just-"
"it's fine, I get it," I assured. "bye nance, see you tomorrow" I hung up the phone, suddenly exhausted from our conversation, yet, I couldn't go to sleep. I sighed, remembering that jonathan had taken another picture of me. I reached down and grabbed my jacket, searching my pockets for the photos. when I found it, I carefully studied it, confused
It was right before steve had thrown me into his pool. both steve and i looked completely different, my face was completely vulnerable clearly displaying terror. steve looked sympathetic instead of his usual, snotty self
It looked like a wholesome photo if tommy wasn't right behind steve, his face full of mischief and malicious intent. I elected to ignore him and instead focused on steve. the thought once again came. why was steve being so nice to me? and why was he so worried about knowing why I was scared? most importantly, why was I being nice to him? I hate him, he's my enemy.
I doubt he suddenly had a 'change of heart,' but the idea that he was only doing it because I was his girlfriend's best friend didn't sound right either
"who are you, steve harrington?" I muttered, placing the photo on my nightstand. I reached for my pistol, but remembered that I gave it to steve, Great. more interacting with steve harrington was coming my way
my eyes fluttered open the next morning, irritated by the sunlight. I sat up, glancing around my room, trying to remember what happened yesterday. when my eyes landed on some pictures of nancy, barb and me, everything came flooding back to me. will had died. barb was missing, I groaned immediately wishing I could just go back to sleep and dream all the chaos away but others needed me
i had to be there for dustin, nancy and jonathan. I repeated my morning routine, through everything felt harder to do. harder to do my makeup, to pick an outfit, to do my hair, harder to eat and even harder to get into nancy's car, and now I was sitting in nancy's passenger seat, sighing and huffing
"heather-"
"nancy, listen, I get you want to help me, but I'm still processing everything, ok? I'll tell you when I'm ready, I promise"
nancy didn't say anything, leaving us in an awkward silence. of course I wanted to talk to someone about it. I just didn't know what to say, didn't wanna say the wrong thing and have everyone suddenly all over me, saying "it's ok, heather! It wasn't your fault!" that would be so annoying, so I just kept my mouth shut
nancy pulled into her regular parking spot both of us were still silent. I quickly exited and started to briskly walk to the school when nancy stopped me with a hug
"I'm here for you, ok?"
the all too familiar lump formed in my throat, making it impossible to form words. instead, I hugged nancy a little tighter and nodded my head. the bell broke us apart, I quickly wiped my eyes and smiled at nancy, mumbling a "thank you" before jogging to class
"class? may I have your attention?"
while everyone else stopped to look at the teacher, my eyes stayed glued to the desk. I honestly couldn't have cared less about cells or genetics mutations at a moment like this
"im sure many of you have heard the news about will byers, and how it is by all means a traumatic event. However-"
"i told you, byers probably killed him," tommy snickered. my fist tightened, making my knuckles white
"dude, shut up!" steve scolded
"and I'm sure henderson helped him"
I whirled around faster than lightning, my face twisted up in a glower
"you know what, tommy? go to hell, if I would have killed him I would have killed you!"
"Heather Henderson!"
I looked back up to the front of the classroom, my lips turned downward in an annoyed frown, the teacher's face was red, his knuckles white as mine, still. I didn't care
"Yes!" I spat
"Office. Now. Take your stuff!"
"how about no! Why can't you take obsessed tommy out of class, i was actually defending myself!"
"well tommy isn't disrupting my class!"
"the only 'person' disrupting your class is you by yelling at me and not just moving on with the lesson!"
"heather, office now. before I call security and they escort you out!"
"bitch" I mumbled scoffing, grabbing my bag and walking to the door
"what was that, heather? couldn't hear you? maybe speak up?"
"i called you a bitch! Do you want me to say it louder? Bitch!" I mocked. slamming the door behind me. I got occasional glances from kids sluffing class and loitering the halls, but their focus quickly shifted to behind me. confused, I turned around
tommy was walking not too far behind me, his face set in a smirk. like me, his bag was slung over his shoulder, the anger I felt. I just wanted to beat tommy's ass and also call him a bitch. I shoved all my thoughts down and looked ahead
"Henderson!"
"yes, hagan?" I snapped, my eyes still looking forward
"how'd you know it was me?"
"who wouldn't recognize your annoying voice"
"ok. henderson, how'd you do it?"
I knew exactly what he was talking about, I didn't say anything mostly because I knew he was just trying to get under my skin
"hey! I asked you a question!" tommy grabbed my shoulder and flipped me towards him. "how'd you kill him?"
"i didn't kill him so get your hands off me before you don't have any" I growled through gritted teeth. "Leave. Me. Alone!" I pushed his hand away from my shoulder and walked away
"did you shove him in the lake?" tommy yelled. "Or did you kill him before and then throw him in?"
"Gosh hagan you're so obsessed with all of this. fuck off!"
I slammed the door behind me, glad to get away from tommy for a minute. I collapsed into one of the chairs as the secretary stared at me
"can I help you, Ms. Henderson?" She asked, her face clouded with confusion
"that stupid biology teacher I have sent me here!" I responded, trying to keep my voice level
"Uh-huh, Mr..."
"I don't remember his last name."
the secretary sighed before turning to her computer. she typed in a few letters while the office door swung open. tommy sat a few chairs down, his eyes glued to me the entire time. I scoffed and ignored him
"Mr Smith is his name." she informed, giving her attention back to me
"that's the most boring name ever! just like his personality," I drawled. "it really matches!"
"you, Mr. Hagan, what are you here for?" she asked. Ignoring my statement
"was sent here by good ole mr. smith." he answered, his voice laced with sarcasm
the secretary glanced between tommy and I, obviously trying to come up with some elaborate conspiracy that linked between us. after a minute she sighed, and said "tell me what happened?"
"henderson here told me to go to h- a very bad place," tommy corrected
"only because you were harassing me!" I argued, sitting up and glaring at tommy
"i said something to you!"
"yeah, something insensitive!"
"Alright, Alright, enough!" the secretary scolded. I laid back in my seat, my arms folding across my chest as an annoyed sigh escaped my lips. "Ms Henderson, what was the insensitive thing Mr. Hagan said?"
"he was just saying cruel things about the byers ," I stated, glowering at the freckled boy. "talking about how jonathan killed will and I helped him"
the secretary seemed shocked at my statement she kept glancing between tommy and I, trying to decide what to do? finally she grabbed her notepad and wrote something down, holding a slip of paper out for me
"ms. henderson, you're free to go back to class. give this to Mr. Smith. Mr. Hagan, we're going to have a little chat about something called 'a time and a place'."
i took the paper and gave one last smirk at tommy before heading back out into the hall, I glanced down to where my class was, then ditched the idea. I didn't want to deal with Mr. Smith or whatever common name he has, and you know what? I wasn't going to. So, instead of heading straight down the hall, I took a right and hid in the girl's bathroom
I studied myself in the mirror, a smirk starting to shine on my face
"hey henderson!"
I'd heard my last name so much today that it was starting to get annoying. nonetheless, I turned to the person, immediately rolling my eyes
"great more drama!" I sighed. "Listen harrington, if you say anything about will-"
"this isn't about byers," steve snapped. "It's about barb!"
Immediately, steve piqued my attention. I fully stopped what I was doing and asked, "do you know something about her? is she safe? did they find her? is she ali-"
"no, no, nothing like that. Listen, the police know about barb's disappearance, and they're interrogating all of us. please, please don't mention anything about the beers-"
"I'm gonna stop you right there, one of my best friends is missing, a little boy was found dead last night, there's possibility a killer roaming around on the loose, and you're worried about, what? getting in trouble with daddy?"
"please-"
"listen, I wasn't planning on mentioning them anyway, but now that you've brought it up, maybe I'll go out of my way to mention it"
"but you'd get in trouble, too," steve pointed out
I laughed. "Not by my mom, she honestly couldn't give two shits as long as I'm not driving. the cops wouldn't do anything about it either, especially after will and barbs disappearence. I got nothing to lose"
steve opened his mouth, then closed it again, he sighed. "Please, just don't mention anything."
"no promises" I smirked. turning to walk away, but steve grabbed my shoulder
"you were looking for barb last night, right? even before I found you?"
"yeah, nancy and I went looking earlier, why? does it affect you or some?"
"did you.... see something?"
I raised an eyebrow and asked, "what do you mean?"
"nancy just said something about seeing a bear-"
"yeah, I saw something," I interrupted, "but it was probably just a person in a mask trying to scare us"
"what if it was the person who killed will?"
"why wouldn't they have attacked me and nancy?"
"safety in numbers?"
I didn't have a good response to steve's answer, so I asked, "do you still have my gun?"
"and flashlight!"
I sighed, "can i come by after school to pick them up?"
steve thought for a minute, then answered, "yeah, I should be home by then"
"ok, I'll be there after school," I assured, already starting to walk off. "If there is a single scratch on it, harrington, you're dead."
"noted!" steve yelled

"you're actually going to steve's party?"
"well, yeah!" nancy answered
barb and I looked at each other, both our eyebrows cocked. "but aren't you on house arrest?" I reminded
"I'll just tell my mom that I'm hanging out with one of you guys. or that I'm going to that assembly tonight. you're coming with me?"
"of course" barb assured
"yeah, I still hate harrington, but having two friends is better than one, plus tommy explicitly told me that I wasn't invited, so now I have to go"
"what if he yells at you to go home?"
"first, I won't let him yell at me, second I'll tell him to man up and deal with it!"
my legs felt sore as I sat down at the kitchen table, ready to eat whatever mom had made. I'd been out in the forest for about an hour trying to look for that tree, but no luck. It seemed to have just.. disappeared. no, I probably just hadn't looked hard enough, but mom wouldn't let me search past dark, and besides, steve's party started less than an hour
i couldn't just bail out on nancy and barb, and don't get me wrong, I think barb is perfectly capable of watching over nancy, but it never hurts to have two 'bodyguards' plus I want to see the look on tommy's face when I go when I wasn't invited
"so, sweetie how was school today?" mom asked, sitting where dustin normally sat. "It was fine. I passed my math test with a 90. where's dustin?"
"he's eating with the wheelers," she responded. "lucas is there, too. I think they just needed time to process everything that has happened." a silence fell over the table as mom and I ate, just enjoying each others company
"you know, if you're having a hard time, you can always talk to me." she assured
I smiled. "I know."
we finished dinner and loaded our plates, just discussing how our day went. "oh! that's right! I remembered. I got invited to a party, and I was wondering if I could go!"
"A-a party?"
"yeah, you know where you hang out with people and have a fun time?"
"yeah, I know what a party is, but don't they usually have alcohol and drugs?"
"sometimes they do, sometimes they don't," you shrugged
mom sighed, "just be smart, if you drink, don't drive if you do drugs, still don't drive."
"i wasn't planning on driving at all!" I laughed
we finished cleaning the dishes and went off to do our own thing, mom went to watch 'press you luck' while I went up to my room to get ready. as I was digging through my closet, I wondered what happened to that girl, did mrs wheeler call CPS? or did she decide to take her under her wing for a little bit? I'd have to ask dustin when he gets home
"barb, pull over" nancy ordered
"what?"
"pull over!"
barb listened to nancy's request and parked. we looked at each other baffled
"why are we parked so far away?" I groaned. "I don't wanna walk that far."
"I don't want the neighbors to see me and tell my mom," nancy explained
"this is so stupid," barb said. "I'm just gonna drop-"
"barb c'mon!" nancy begged. "you'd promise that you'd go, and you're coming!"
"nancy, if barb doesn't want to come, don't make her," I warned. "I'll still be there."
"yeah, but you'll probably get drunk or something!" nancy argued
"first of all, I probably won't drink because it's late and second just because I'm drunk, doesn't mean I'm useless" I say, trying to hide the fact that I lied about the first one
"barb, we're going to have a great time!"
"he just wants to get in your pants!" barb stated
"no, he doesn't," nancy chuckled
"nance, seriously, think about it," you encouraged. "big house? drugs and alcohol? Is that not clicking?" you snapped
"he invited you to his house, his parents aren't home," barb added. "C'mon, you are not that stupid"
"tommy h and carol are gonna be there!" nacy reminded
"is that supposed to change our minds?" I asked
"they've been doing the dirty since, like. seventh grade." barb commented
"that's disgusting" nancy gagged
"it's true!"
"well, you can be my responsible guardian," nancy offered. sliding out of her shirt. "make sure I don't get drunk or do anything stupid."
barb sighed in annoyance while I rolled my eyes. "I could be responsible while drunk." you mumbled
"is that a new bra!"
i poked up between the front seats, wanting to be part of the conversation. Indeed nancy was wearing a new, fancy bra
"nancy, are you serious?" I sighed
"no, it's not" she lied
after the five minute walk we could've easily avoided, we were on steve's doorstep, all of us exchanging glances
"so, who's gonna knock?" I asked. nancy reached across me and tapped the doorbell sending a ringing noise throughout the house. steve opened the door a second later, a player-approved smile stuck to his face. "hello there, ladies," he greeted, looking to each of us. his expression wavered when he saw me, he quickly composed himself. "c'mon in!"
nancy and barb walked in with ease, drinking in steve's enormous house. I tried to step in past the threshold, but steve blocked it off. "i told you, you weren't invited!"
"no, tommy said I wasn't invited. and I'd be an idiot if I'd listen to tommy!" I snapped
"go away!"
"no, harrington, I'm not gonna go away. Im not here because I want to annoy you, or because I want to get wasted, I'm here for nancy!"
"hey, heather, you coming?" nancy called, glancing at me. I glared at steve. waiting for him to tell me something. he looked torn, glancing between nancy and I. he finally made his decision, moving his hand and letting me pass. "thank you!" I spat
i followed nancy and barb into steve's backyard, taking in my surroundings. a lighted pool was the main attraction, steam going off the top of it, multiple chairs lined the edges, some with tables, some with umbrellas. a box of beer was sitting there, begging to be opened. I ignored it and sat in a pool chair, next to barb. both of us carefully watching nancy. her eyes glued on steve, who had just come out
carol began screaming, forcing all of us to look at her, tommy had his arms wrapped around her, threatening to throw her into the pool. "they annoy me," I whispered to barb, carol cussing tommy out in the background. barb noded, "same"
steve walked behind us, all our attention on him. he grabbed a beer can and pulled out a pocket knife, cutting a little slit. he held it up to his mouth and chugged the entire contents. nancy's undivided attention was on him, a small smile appearing on her face
"wow, so attractive," I mocked. barb had to stifle her laugh. steve threw the beer can to the side and grabbed a cigarette that was tucked behind his ear, just sticking it in his mouth. "Is that supposed to impress me?" nancy teased
steve looked at her, bewildered. "you're not?"
"you're a cliché, you do realize that?"
"you are a cliché. what, with your... with your grades, and your band practice-"
"I am so not in band," she laughed
"okay, party girl, why don't you just show us, huh, how it's done, then?" steve grabbed another can of beer, along with the pocket knife, and held them out to her waiting for her to take it. "Nancy-" I warned
"what? You wanna do it too?" she asked, standing up
"I don't know-"
"why would she? shes ms beauty and rage after all. I bet she's never even tasted alcohol before." steve taunted
"not true!" carol interjected. "remember when she got wasted last year and made out with jason?"
"jason carver?!" tommy asked in disbelief
"yeah!"
I hated how they were tryna make fun of me, they didn't know how and it was so funny because they were only making me look like I had a fun time that night. I sat there watching them laugh with a small smirk on my face
"let me guess, he was your first kiss?" steve mocked
"no, actually he wasn't." I snapped. "And I don't understand why you're so obsessed with me nor my love-life, harrington."
"I don't see why you're obsessed with me, henderson!"
"I'm not but you wish!"
"I don't!"
"yeah, keep telling yourself that harrington, but deep down I know exactly you are-"
"oh yeah, then why do you hate me so much!?"
"because your personality sucks mr daddy's money over there!" you scoff before speaking again. "and a bitc-"
"would you two shut up so I can chug this!" nancy interrupted, glaring at both of us. she didn't wait for a response and cut open the can, quickly downing it's contents, and while nancy was chugging I could feel harrington's glare at the back of my head, burning holes in it, I tried to ignore it but failed when I turned my head to look at him, we made brief eye contact before I turned back to nancy
she gave a little bow when it was gone, everyone was cheering and clapping except for barb
"barb? you wanna try?
barb and I looked up at nancy, equally confused. she knew barb never drank
"what? No , of course not," barb answered. 'i don't want to, thanks."
"come on," nancy cooed
"yeah, come on," steve agreed
"Nancy, she doesn't want to," I stated my voice firm. "No is No!"
"it's fun! Just give it a shot!" nancy encouraged, ignoring me
"Nance!"
"just give it a chance!"
barb looked annoyed, then stood up and took the beer and the knife from nancy, she studied the can for a second, trying to find the best spot, before placing the knife near the bottom
"so you just-"
her sentence abruptly ended, the can dropping on the ground. barb held her finger with her face twisted in pain
"Barb? What happened?" I asked, standing up and looking at her hand. blood was beginning to pool, dripping onto the tile below
"Gnarly," tommy chuckled
"are you ok?" nancy asked, materializing beside me
"yeah," barb curtly stated
"barb, your bleeding," I reminded
"I'm fine." she turned around and looked at steve. "where's your bathroom?"
"Oh, it's uh... it's down past the kitchen, to the left," steve instructed, pointing as if it would help
"do you need me to come with you?" I asked, watching barb leave with steve trailing not too far behind
"I'm good!" she called
"jason carver? are you serious henderson?" tommy laughed
"I was drunk," I muttered turning away from barb and to the other three
"I was drunk," carol mocked. "you still made out with jason"
"and you still don't know how to mind your business!"
"Henderson!"
the four of us looked to the backdoor, where steve stood with his hands crossed in front of his chest and a smirk on his gace
"yeah, that's my name," I shouted, taking a mock bow
"i let you into my party, but you haven't been pulling your weight"
"Ohlh No! I haven't been doing my part! I feel so ashamed of myself!" I mocked
"I think it's time we had a bit of entertainment," steve walked over until he was directly in front of me. a mischievous glint in his eyes. "arm wrestling contest. You and me!"
I raised an eyebrow, "that's your idea of fun?"
"if you win, you get to throw me into the pool. but if I win-"
"yeah yeah, you get to throw me into the pool" even though I had a straight face, I mentally froze, quickly assessing the situation. steve was probably strong but I workout and lift weights, if I would lose I would get thrown into the pool, and suddenly relive all my trauma, but steve was obviously drunk, and his muscles probably wouldn't work as well, plus I don't see any gym related stuff nor I see him go to a gym
"you're on!"
steve and I sat across from each other, a white pool table between us. he rested his elbow on the table and held up his hand, waiting for me to take it, I could still decline. I could tell him to get a grip on reality and stop being so full of himself, but I loved to prove harrington wrong and I wasn't a pussy. I gripped his awaiting hand
his hand was a lot bigger than mine, and his fingers tightly squeezed my palm, I pressed back in response
"Ready... Set...Go!"
steve and I pressed each other's hand, trying to beat the other, I knew harrington was going to struggle and tommy or carol would interfere so I made sure to keep my left hand unoccupied, resting on my left thigh
nancy, carol and tommy watched from a distance, whispering among themselves
"nancy's only dating you because of your money!" I taunted. trying to shock him and win. Instead, his grip tightened
"at least I have good quality about myself," he snapped
our hands stayed relatively close to the middle, only bobbing down every so often
"this is getting boring!"
"watch this!" tommy laughed, you caught on very quickly, tommy strutted over to us and tried to shove his hand on top of mine and steve's and pull to the right side, I immediately released my left hand like a reflex and pulled it to the left side, dragging and pulling on it, until steve's hand touched the table. rendering me the winner
"what!" steve shouted
"well, a lose is a lose," you reminded
i got up and tried to pick up steve, by wrapping my arms around his waist and pick him up unfortunately even though I lifted weights and worked out, steve was still bigger than me, leaving him to pick me up very easily
I was on his shoulder, hitting his back, screaming and wiggling, trying to get out of his grip, steve gripped me tighter while walking towards the pool. steve changed his hold, so instead of me being on his shoulder, he was carrying me bridal style
funny. I thought bitterly. this makes me feel like a bride. if my other leg was secure and if it wasn't steve harrington carrying me
I struggled in his grip, muttering, "let me go, harrington"
he laughed, "scared henderson?! this is what you get for trying to act like your the shit!"
laughter was echoing all around me, causing a blush to rise against my cheeks
"Woah! don't get too comfortable, henderson," steve mocked, I glared at him
"fuck you, harrington!"
"you wish!"
"put me down!" I snarled, struggling more and more
"right here?"
I stopped moving to see what was below me. water. steve started swinging his arms back and forth, preparing to throw me into the pool. I grabbed his arm
"Harrington!" I whispered. he paid no attention to me. "Harrington!"
"throw her in" carol shrieked
"Steve!"
he stopped moving his arms and glanced down at me. I didn't bother putting a fake mask of confidence on. I was terrified, and I couldn't care less if steve saw that. for a moment, he faltered. his eyes suddenly appeared more sympathetic
"please steve, I'm begging you!" you say clutching his shirt tightly
he began to put you back down when tommy h appeared behind steve. "this is taking too long!" he complained. with that. he shoved steve and I into the water. my body started to shut down once the warm water hit my back. flashbacks flooded into my mind. brown hair. a blue jacket. darkness. cold. fear.
water shot up my nose, bringing me back to my senses. I had to get out here. I broke through the water surface, gasping for air. steve was swimming a few feet away from me. tommy and carol were also in the pool, joking around like nothing had happened. I scoffed, swimming over to the ladder and pulled myself out
"I'm leaving." I stated, walking past nancy towards steve's house
"What? Why?' nancy asked, following me
"because I'm traumatized!" I responded
"you were thrown into a pool, not a lake"
I whirled around to face nancy, my face clearly annoyed with watery eyes. she slightly backed up. "because, nancy, water is water. it's not the fact that it was a pool. it's the fact I was thrown in by the school player 'my enemy' while wearing normal clothes. Is that enough for you?" I walked off, not bothering to wait for nancy's response
I went to steve's front door, breaking down, hot tears were spilling out my eyes, sniffling while wiping my tears and snot away. the backdoor opened. thinking it was nancy, I snarled, " I don't wanna talk, nance"
"well I'm not nance"
"oh, great, even better," I growled though a voice crack was heard. I turned around to glare at steve
instead of responding to my statement, he handed me a towel and a beer. "here"
I grabbed the items, glared at him one more time, before speaking. "I hate you. steve." voice low and cracking as I walked through the front door. for a second, I just stood there, drowning in guilt about what I just said to steve a few seconds ago, he didn't mean it, it was tommy's fault but than again it was his stupid idea. I'm not sure why steve gave me a towel nor a beer and I'm not sure what to do, barb was my ride here, but she needed to watch nancy
I could walk home, but walking alone, in the dark, with everything that's happening probably wasn't the best idea. so I just sat there, on the porch steps, the towel around my shoulder and the beer in my hand as tears began to fall again, my mind running in circles as my vision was going out and coming back in. "I hate you harrington, I hate you so much" I muttered
while I lifted the beer to my lips, my eyes drifted around the yard, taking in my surroundings. the harrington's yard was extremely well-kept, with the lawn freshly mowed and matching decor. the same couldn't be said about the forest that surrounded it. dark, cold, and unforgiving, it made sense why a little boy could go missing so easy. something rusted in the forest close to me
crunching leaves and snapping sticks. my head shot in that direction, carefully scanning the area. all noises stopped, leaving the only sound one with the teenagers partying in the back. I glanced down at my fiddling hands, wondering what to do while I waited. the snapping got closer. my eyes dove back into the scene. maybe a deer was going to pop out and just sniff around
that would've been cute, I grazed into the trees, waiting for something to appear, something a few feet back caught my attention. at first, I thought it was an animal, but then it started to move around. was it tommy or steve pulling a prank on me or trying to scare me? I quickly analyzed the height. the thing was taller than any of them , making neither candidates. maybe it was steve's dad? that idea was quickly shut down when I noticed the gray skin
fear slowly crept into my mind. this couldn't have been a person. and if it was, then it was a psychopath. I slowly stood up, giving myself better leverage in case I had to escape. i was cursing myself out when I didn't bring my gun, but then again I didn't know this is how the night would end. the thing whipped its head towards me, giving me much better view of its face. it was like an alien you see in those sci-fi movies, with a lack of eyes, nose and mouth and a long, lanky build
i blacked out until my back hit the sliding. the thing crept closer to me, it's mouth opening up, strangely it reminded me like a flower, if a flower was lined with rows and rows of teeth
"stay calm" I muttered
the thing growled, my last nerve snapped, and I bolted off steve's porch. I couldn't hear anything except my heart pounding in my ears. I had no idea what that thing was, and I had no idea if it was following me, yeah, I could have turned around and looked. but I was terrified of what I'd see. some creepy alien chasing after me with its flower mouth? no thanks I watched too many scary movies for that
was this even a smart idea? I could have been leading this thing straight to my house, straight to my mom and dustin, but where else I was supposed to go? if I went home, I could at least protect myself. I had guns, knives and dustin
I ran faster, praying that alien wasn't fast
I slammed my front door behind me, trembling while securing each lock. I sprinted up to my room and locked that behind me before diving into my closet. I moved my hands blindly across the wall, trying to find the shelf that held my hun. I grabbed it and crouched in the corner, my knees pressed against my chest. someone pounded on the door, making me jump. my breathing hitched, and tears sprung to my eyes
"please, don't hurt me!" I muttered
"Heather? are you ok!" dustin asked, still knocking on the door
"how do I know your dustin?" I called different theories racing in my mind
"What?"
"How. Do. I. Know. Your. The. Real. Dustin!"
"you fidget when you lie, your favorite movie is E.T, I have this weird condition called cleidocranial dysplasia. my teeth won't be coming in until-"
yep, most likely dustin. I crawled out of my closet and swung open my bedroom door, carefully scanning my brother for anything off. nothing this I could see
"are you drunk?" he asked
"Um. No, I only had, like. two sips of beer," I snapped
"Oh yeah? how much do you consider a sip?"
"Dustin-"
"No, don't 'dustin' me. heather. It's midnight, mom is asleep, I was getting ready for bed, then you burst inside, slam the door behind, and run off. im the only one being rational here."
i sighed, "fine. Yes dustin, I might be a little drunk, but it's nothing like a full blown hangover tomorrow."
"that doesn't explain why you did what you did."
"we watched a scary movie!" I lied. "when I got there, I thought the killer was right behind me"
"what movie?"
"Uh.. Friday the 13th,"
"Friday the 13th,?"
"yeah! You know.. part 2!"
dustin sighed, "you know what? I'll come talk to you in the morning, when you're sober." he shut the door behind him, leaving me alone in my dark room. my heart rate quickened, my palms suddenly a lot more sweaty, was I necessarily scared of the dark? No, but when you were just being chased by some freaky alien, having a bit of light was definitely needed. I switched on the lamp next to the bed and crawled under the sheets, placing my gun under my pillow. I tried to shut my eyes, but every time I did, I saw it. It kept getting closer and closer, it's mouth opening wider and wider each time
this was going to be a long night
"Heather, it's-"
dustin's sentence ended abruptly when I swung open the door, he gave me a confused look, to which I answered. "thanks"
"I thought alcohol didn't keep you up?"
"it doesn't!" I snapped. before dustin could respond, I slammed the door in his face and got dressed. when I opened the door, dustin was still standing there. "why are you so cranky?!"
"why do you think!?" I stormed past him and went to the bathroom, inspecting my reflection. dark circles shadowed beneath my bloodshot eyes, my makeup from the night was still mostly intact, besides the smudged eyeshadow, mascara and lipstick. I washed it off and reapplied new makeup, taking special care to your eye bags
your hair was nappy and all over the place, you brushed it and put dry shampoo over it, calling it a day. by the time you were in the kitchen, dustin was strolling through the door. he called out, "bye mom! bye heather!" and left. "where's dustin going?" I asked noticing mom at the table
"he's going over to mike's house before school. he also has an AV club meeting after school, so I don't know if I'll be off work, so if that's the case, can you pick him up?"
"sure" I said, he's having an awful lot of AV club meetings I thought
I slowly ate my cereal, thinking about steve's party as I had the entire night. Is nancy going to pick me up or am I going to have to drive to school?
surprise surprise, as soon as I had thought that, nancy's car pulled up. I disposed the food and called, "goodbye" to my mom, stomping out of nancy's car. seeing her reminded me of what she had said last night. about how I had been thrown in a pool not a lake. yeah, they weren't the same thing, but trauma was still trauma and water is still water. it doesn't matter about the location, it was about the person and what they did
i slammed the car door shut behind me, clutching my bookbag close to my chest and started staring out the window. nancy began driving. "I'm sorry about what I said yesterday!" she sighed, a minute or two later she started again. "I don't know what I was thinking"
"it's fine," I mumbled, the anger slowly started fading away
"no, it's not. it obviously affected you, and I'm really sorry for that, I was a shitty friend and I'm sorry!"
"nancy!" I lightly touched her arm. "yes you weren't thinking at all, but I forgive you, traumas weird."
nancy smiled and huffed out a laugh. "thanks"
before I knew it, we pulled into the school, nancy and I left her car and walked into the school together, I expected barb to meet us when we first walked in, but she didn't. nancy and I looked at each other, confused, until I brushed it off. "she probably just went to study," I assured, though me saying that didn't convince me nor nancy
"did she take you home last night?"
"No?"
"well, she was gone when I wanted to go home."
"what time did you go home?"
"a little after one," nancy's eyes darting around, her face uncomfortable. now that I noticed, I realized a bunch of people were staring at us. I waved it off and continued the conversation, but I was hoping I wasn't thinking it was right
"I'm sure she just got tired and went home" I offered, arriving at my locker
"yeah, yeah. that's probably what happened' nancy stuck a few books in her locker when someone slammed open her door, both of us jumped. "Hey!" nancy laughed, a slight tone of nervousness in her tone
"is everything ok?" steve asked
"yeah! yeah, totally I just... I feel like everyone's.. staring at me."
so they did do it, I thought, disgusted. that explains the looks
"oh i didn't... I didn't tell anyone," Steve assured
"yeah, and you aren't the school player." I mumbled
"i know! I know, of course not, but what about, like, tommy and carol and them?"
"you're being paranoid."
then how does everyone in the school know? I thought
"I mean, when you two are talking in a not so secure spot that multiple people could listen on," I interrupted, slamming my locker shut. "It's not surprising everyone knows!"
"really henderson?" steve spat, all acts of kindness from last night disappearing. "really?" I smirked. "class is about to start, so if you two want to go make out in the bathroom, I would suggest going now." with that, I left the pair and went off to my first period
my eyes scanned the lunch room, trying to find barb or nancy at one of the many tables. I spotted nancy sitting with steve, tommy and carol, and instantly ditched that idea. barb was still nowhere to be seen, I sighed accepted my fate, and walked out in the hall to eat lunch alone, I could've went with nancy and them but then I probably would be questioned about last night
luckily, jonathan passed me, and sat down next to me
"hey."
"hey!"
"any sign of will yet?"
jonathan shook his head. "No, I went looking for him yesterday, but I didn't find anything"
"nothing at all? not even like a weird tree?"
jonathan looked at me, his eyebrows scrunched. "What?"
"nothing," I rushed, shoving some of the meatloaf in my mouth to avoid further questioning
"well, I'll let you get back to your lunch. See you later, heather!"
"see ya," I waved, watching jonathan walk away, probably to the dark room. I smiled as I thought about some of the photographs he had taken before. he had a bunch of pictures of will, some professionally done, others were just a joke. he had a few of me, but I ordered him never to show anyone or else he will never see the light of day. and then, he had a bunch just about nature. that's probably what he was developing now
I finished the last of my food and threw the trash away, walking around the school to see if barb was around, a few times, I thought I saw her. but it was just some other girl with short, red hair
she was probably just skipping, I mean, even the most perfect students had some sort of rebellious streak, right? but what had happened when I thought will just went to school early? Oh, that's right, he was actually missing. Infact the more I thought about it, the new stuff started to make sense
will went missing only a few days ago, meaning the kidnapper was almost likely in town, and if that thing I had seen had something to do with it? In fact, I was almost positive it did. I mean. why hadn't that thing gone after me? the only logical explanation was because it was after something else. I was going to talk to nancy and see if she had discovered anything, if not. I was going to find barb and the truth

when I got to nancy's car, I noticed her face turned in a frown and her eyebrows scrunched together, like she was thinking. I climbed into the passenger seat and threw my bag in the back before focusing on her
"what's-"
"wills missing," she informed
my mouth dropped open, the sinking feeling from before coming back even stronger
"you're joking, right?"
nancy shook her head, starting the car and driving us home. I stared at her until I realized I looked like a creep. my eyes drifted down to my fidgeting hands, trying to contain my thoughts. will byers went missing. my brother and his friends were the last people to see him, where was he? was he kidnapped? was he- was he even alive?
the light click of the car door broke me from my thoughts, pulling me back into the present, we were in front of my house, with nancy patiently waiting for me to get out. I muttered a quiet "thanks", grabbed my bag, trudged to the front door. I plopped down on the couch, still trying to figure out everything that happened
"Heather?"
the soft voice gently broke through my thoughts. I sat up and looked at the doorway. dustin stood there, his head turned to the ground and his hands gripping the end of his shirt
"i dont know if you heard-."
"i know wills missing." I interrupted. dustin's head turned more downward. I sighed and walked over to him, pulling him into an embrace. "he's going to be okay, ok? he's smart, strategic and resourceful. and he's got all of hawkins looking for him."
"i-i know," dustin mumbled, his voice cracking. "It's just... I was the last person to see him. that's just weird to think about."
"its not gonna stay that way for long." I comforted. "were gonna find him, ok?"
"O-ok," he sniffled
i pulled away from him and offered a comforting smile, an idea forming in my head. "Im actually going to the byers' and see if they need anything. do you want to come with me?"
dustin shook his head and said, "no, I think I just need some alone time."
my initial thought was I can't just leave him alone! but then I realized that was exactly what he needed. time to process exactly what had happened and how to deal with it
"lock the door and don't answer it," I ordered, grabbing my keys and walking out the door, "if anything happens, call mom or the neighbors. If you really need to, have mews protect you."
"but mews is a kitten!"
I ignored dustin and slammed the door shut walking to my motorcycle. I inspected the quote on quote "dent" and didn't see anything. "little bastard!" you said putting on your helmet and started the ignition driving to the byers
once I arrived at the byers house with almost no incident and walked inside, careful to step over the many items strewn across the floor. books, clothes, cigarettes, you name it, it was probably there. down the main hallway, I could hear joyce's pleading with someone over the phone
"Hello?" a masculine voice called. "who's there?"
"it's just me, heather," I answered back. jonathan came into the foyer where I was awkwardly standing. his face slightly fell when he noticed me, but he quickly faked a smile. "heather, we weren't expecting you," he grinned, pulling me into a hug. "what brings you here?"
"i just came over to see you and joyce," I responded, pulling away from him. "I came to see what you two needed help with."
"well, there's not much right now," jonathan sighed, "there's no lead, and lonnie's not really cooperating..."
"lonnie's a douche. I would be surprised if he picked up the phone," I added "do you need me to drive into the city to talk to him?"
"no, we don't want to put you in that situ-"
joyce shrieked a few choice words, cutting off jonathan sentence. the phone slammed against something before joyce walked into the foyer. her hair was unkept, with dark circles already forming beneath her eyes. "I'm about to drive to that house of his and-"
"Mom!" jonathan interrupted. "why are the cops here?"
joyce and I looked out the window, seeing exactly what jonathan was. hoppers police jeep, along with another police car, pulling into the driveway. jonathan and joyce bolted out the front door and onto the porch, anxiously waiting for some sort of news. I stayed back and watched the scene from the window
hopper got out and went to the back of his vehicle, pulling something from the bed. once he got closer, I recognized it as a blue bike- no, not just a blue bike. wills blue bike. my heart was squeezed by a wave of panic. please let will be okay
hopper set the bike down on the side of the house and walked onto the porch, prompting joyce and jonathan to rejoin me in the foyer. hopper followed not long after, with powell and callahan on his tail
"It was just lying there?" joyce asked in disbelief
"yeah," hopper answered. he pointed into the kitchen, telling powell to check it out
"was there any blood on it, or-"
"No, no, no," hopper assured, walking down the hall and looking around. I followed him along with joyce and jonathan
"where was the bike?" I asked, wanting to be more involved
"off mirkwood, as your brother would call it."
mirkwood? that wasn't too far from here. was it?
"if you found the bike out there, then why are you here?" jonathan asked, his tone worried
"he had a key to the house, right?"
"well, yeah!"
"so. maybe he came home."
"what! you don't think I checked my own house!?" joyce explode. I sat back and watched the scene in silence. waiting to see where hop was going with this
"No." hopper stopped once he got to the door, glancing at the wall. he bent down and inspected a seemingly random spot. "has this always been here?"
"I don't know! I mean, I have two boys!"
as if to prove his point, hopper opened the door, the knob hovering just above a blemish in the wall. "you're not sure?" he walked into the backyard with joyce, leaving jonathan and I alone in the kitchen. "What's hopper tryna get at?" I asked, putting my arms across my chest
"I honestly have no idea," jonathan admitted
"is there anywhere that he could've hidden?"
"the shed, but we already checked there. If will was here, we would've found him already"
joyce stooped back into the house, bringing chester in with her. he whimpered, but began panting and wagging his tail once he saw me. I scratched his head while joyce pulled down some dog food and fed him. his tail slapped against my thigh while joyce glared at him
"I don't know what hop is thinking," she confessed. "if my will was here, we would've found him already. he's not the type of kid that would just play hide-and-seek to scare his poor mother."
"I don't think he's hiding," I stated. "but I hope he is."
"hey, hop! Hopper! JIM!" callahan called down the hall, when he received no response, he and powell joined us in the kitchen, looking around for the chief. ”have you guys seen jim?"
"he's outside." joyce answered, barely sparing them a glance. they nodded and ran outside, calling his name once more
"you don't think he ran off, right?" I asked. both byers shook their head
"again that's not his personality, he's not like that, I don't know if he is all by himself, in the woods or if he's in indianapolis with lonnie or-"
"Hey, hey, joyce, it's okay, ok? will is... resourceful, and smart, and strategic," I repeated. "and we're gonna find him before you can say "hawkins indiana."
before anyone could respond to my statement, the three police officers came back inside, stepping pass us all only to go back out front. "well? did you find anything?" joyce implored
"were organizing a search party," hopper flatly stated. he slammed the door to his jeep and drove off, leaving the three of us confused
"so he didn't find anything?"
the freezing rain was pounding against my back, but I wasn't about to give up, sure, I'd been alone in the woods for about two hours, but this forest was huge, and will was just a little kid. I wasn't going to stop looking until I found some sort of clue. "Will!" I screamed, waiting for some sort of response, nothing.
maybe this was pointless, maybe I should come back here in the morning, that way, I'd have more light and I could bring nancy or barb with me, plus, I was getting some weird feeling that I was being watched, probably just paranoia. but still I was starting to get freaked out
i turned to walk back to my car when I tripped over something, landing with a tud in the mud. I pulled myself up, trying to see what I'd fallen over. my flashlight landed on a animal body, still relatively fresh, claw marks and blood covered the body, making it hard to distinguish exactly what it was. It was most likely a deer, maybe an elk. not super out of the ordinary. expect, those scratch marks didn't look normal. and why would a predator just keep a kill like this out in the open, with it barely eaten
a chill ran up my spine, there was no way I was alone here. I whipped my flashlight around. looking for anything that could pose a threat, no animals, no people, nothing. still scared. I turned back to the body only to find that it had disappeared, leaving a trail of blood behind
i froze. that deer was obviously dead, meaning something had to grab it. something else was here, I'm not alone. I bolted away, terrified that something was going to pop out from behind a tree and grab me, every crack of thunder sent a dose of adrenaline in my blood. every little rain drop reminded me to keep running, no matter how tired I get or how bad my legs hurt. my eyes forward. I had to get in my car, I'd be safe there
the sight of my black camaro brought literal tears in my eyes. I sprinted to the driver's side and practically jumped in. slamming and locking the car door before I was fully seated, I twisted the key, thanking myself I didn't bring my motorcycle, revving the engine to life. my hands gripped the steering wheel, my foot hovering above the pedals. I needed to leave. but something was stopping me
what if that thing took will? what if will was trying to get away but failed? what if he was injured?
with a sigh, I reached across to the compartment in front of the passenger seat and grabbed the little pistol. I wasn't planning on shooting anything, but if I needed to defend myself. this would help
i took a deep breath and opened my door going back out to the pouring rain. I wrapped my leather jacket closer around my shivering body and followed the trail of muddy footprints
my flashlight was swinging wildly around, my heart was beating fast in my chest. the pistol was secured in my other hand, ready to fire at a moments notice. after a minute or two of looking around, I found the spot where the deer had disappeared. the bloody trail through slightly faded, was still intact, I gripped the gun tighter, and followed it
the trail only went on for a hundred feet, tops. it ended once it got to a peculiar tree, I bent down to better inspect it. the wood had a deep, wide gouge in it, with black webs spreading across it, beneath the gouge was a red film that reminded me of skin, the film pulsed, like a heart. little lights flickered beneath it
I stood up and circled the tree, trying to see if there was anything else unusual about it, everything. from the bark to the leaves was normal. the cut was the only thing that had distinguished this tree from the others. I bent back down, my fingers hovering over the injury, was this really the smartest thing to do? i had no idea what this thing was, or what it could do to me. what if it dissolved my hand? or what if scientists were monitoring it, is this my imagination? no it can't be, was this the key to finding will? it suddenly didn't matter if this could kill me, or if this was the key to solving cancer. if this led to will, I would take any chance
i took a deep breath and let my fingers graze the webs
the black webs felt delicate under my fingertips, thin and ready to break at a moment's notice. I was tempted to leave them be, but my determination pushed through. I was going to find will, and if this was the way then so be it
I tore through the webs and touched the pulsing flesh beneath, it seemed to light up wherever it had contact, creating an outline around my hand, the feeling to leave it and comeback but I pushed it down, took a deep breath, ready to push through, when something walked behind me. terrified, i whirled around, and pointed the flashlight in their face, my free hand grabbed the discarded gun and held it at eye level
"Heather?!"
I recognized that voice, my fear died down, but was quickly replaced by anger. "Dustin!? What are you doing here!?"
"why are you here alone? lucas asked, making me realize that dustin had brought the rest of the party and... a girl?
"why are you guys here without an adult?"
"I don't see you with one, either!"
"yeah, because I'm practically one?" I spit. "plus, I brought something to defend myself with. and who's this girl?"
the boys all looked at each other, a slight expression of concern flashing on their faces before speaking again. "we just... found her" mike answered
"bullshit! who would leave a 12 year old girl out her? all alone! while someone is missing!" you stated. "shes not even dressed for this type of weather! with an oversized t-shirt and no shoes, does she even have any pants on?"
"were not bullshiting!" mike yelled back
"are you lying to me?"
"No! look we found her in the woods like this!" mike stated
"what were you doing in the woods?" you say, looking at all four of them
"looking for will? or clues about him!" mike answered
the infected tree wasn't on your mind anymore. in fact, though you hated to think this but will wasn't even your top priority now. you need to get this girl and the kids somewhere safe, where she could get dried off and give us answers
"my car's this way"
"remind me again why we can't tell karen about this girl?" you said, gripping the steering wheel while looking through the rear view mirror and back on the road
mike sighed "for the fifth time, we weren't supposed to be out, we'll solve all this tomorrow, I promise, but it's best if we don't do anything tonight."
"uh-huh, and why exactly am I supposed to trust you three?
"why not? listen, heather, we have a plan, you just have to believe that we are capable," dustin assured
"why can't I be involved in this?"
"because she seems scared of you," lucas answered. he was right, it took the boys a little bit to convince the girl to come with me, and even then, she stayed a ways behind me. when I tried offering her the front seat, she stared at me until mike told her to sit with him and lucas in the back. throughout the entire ride, she'd stared at me, but never answered any questions I'd asked her
defeated, i parked the car and sighed. "if anything goes wrong come out and get me, or karen or nancy. just... please don't do anything that would get you guys hurt, ok?"
a chorus of "ok" echoed around the car before all four kids got out. "I'll just be waiting out here!" I called. I waited for the door to shut behind them before letting my focus go elsewhere. my eyes drifted around the rest of the house, trying to find something to keep me entertained. I glanced up at nancy's brightened room and remembered what harrington had told me earlier that day. If mike wasn't supposed to be out, that probably meant nancy couldn't leave either
good! I thought. she shouldn't be "just talking" to that douche anyways
would nancy really do that, though? she wasn't like that, the 'bad girl' that drank and smoked and slept around. but then again, I never thought she would make out with the school player
the front door swung open, pulling away from my thoughts and tearing my attention to the two boys coming outside, deep in conversation. dustin slid into the passenger seat while lucas took the back seat, dragging me into their discussion
"she's a psycho!" lucas exclaimed
"she tried to get naked in front of us!" dustin added
"she barely speaks!"
"she scares me!"
"ok, ok, you two need to chill with a capital C," I interrupted. "she can't be that bad! I think you two just don't know how to interact with girls."
"I'm telling you, she escaped some asylum-"
"-like micheal myers!" dustin finished
"you've seen halloween?" I asked raising an eyebrow at both of them. "It's rated R. im pretty sure that's illegal."
"don't you go out to parties and get drunk?" lucas asked. "I'm pretty sure that's illegal'."
"that was one time," I snapped. "plus, it wasn't full-blown drunk, I was tipsy."
"nancy said you made-out with some stranger," dustin reminded
"nancy doesn't know what making out is. I kissed him"
"while drunk!"
"oh look, we're here already!" I exclaimed, parking in lucas's driveway. I hopped out the car and got his bike from the trunk, handing it to him before waving goodbye and driving off
"what's the plan?" I asked, turning to dustin. "first, you're a bad liar, your fidgeting with your hair," he ordered. "second, mike is going to tell the girl to go to mrs wheeler tomorrow, she'll know what to do,"
you rolled your eyes at his comment but decided to let it slide. "and tell me exactly why can't she do it tonight?"
"because who would answer the door at night? especially with everything that's happening!"
I opened my mouth to argue back, but I realized dustin had a good point. I closed it and focused back on driving
"what were you doing in the forest?" he asked. I recounted the events from earlier, about hopper thinking will is hiding in the byers house, to organizing a search party, to going out in the woods to that weird looking infected tree. I had a gut feeling something wasn't right, that tree looked weird, infected, and especially out of the ordinary. "I was just out looking for will." I concluded
"so were we! and then that weird girl just decided to show up"
"dustin, be nice!" I warned
"what? she is weird! she tried to strip, she doesn't talk and she was by herself in the woods!"
"to me, it sounds like she tried to get away from some abusive household," I admitted, suddenly glad that the boys were having mrs wheeler deal with this instead of me. "just be nice to her."
"tell that to lucas! I'm pretty nice to her!"
"sure-"
i pulled into our driveway and parked heading into our lighted house. mom was sitting on the recliner, watching 'the price is right', while she was petting mews. when she noticed us, she gently set her down and came to us, pulling us into a breath-taking hug
"where have you two been!?" she inquired, pulling away from us leaving a hand on our shoulders. "you had me so worried!"
"they were doing a search party for will,' I partially-lied. "dustin and I went to go help look for them."
"at this time of night?" moms grip slightly tightened, through whether it was from annoyance or fear, I couldn't tell
"we started earlier. plus there were a bunch of people around!" I argued. "we were just fine!"
"one of those people could've been the one that took will! they could've taken you, too!"
"mom, I had my gun on me, dustin was with me the entire time, if anyone pulled anything we would've stopped them."
"you don't know that!"
"you don't, either!"
"Mom," dustin interrupted, trying to ease the tension. "we were around a lot of neighbors and friends. unless they all decided to band together and kidnap us, that was the safest place we could be."
"it just- it scares me," mom sighed. "that poor byer boy goes missing in hawkins, out of all places. I just don't want to lose one of you two."
"mom, we both know how to protect ourselves," I assured. "plus, everyone is on high alert now. if anything suspicious happens, lots of people are gonna notice."
"you're- you're right," she admitted, letting go of us. "but please whenever you two go out, just let me know before, ok?"
"will do," dustin and I agreed. mom gave us a smile before walking into the kitchen
"we're having spaghetti for dinner," she informed, piling it into three plates, we all grabbed one and sat down at the table, ready to eat, when I feigned remembrance and abruptly stood up
"where are you going?" dustin asked
"I forgot I have homework!" I lied, walking to my room. "thank you mom for dinner!" truth was, mom was probably going to talk to dustin about will's disappearance, and me being there wasn't going to make the conversation any easier
I sat on the edge of my bed, shoving the spaghetti in my mouth while playing through the events of the day, just thinking about them made me realize how exhausted I was. without even changing into pajamas, I placed the half eaten food on my nightstand and crawled under the covers, letting sleep overtake me
something furry crawled across my face and plopped on my nose, restricting airflow. I shot up, launching whatever had been suffocating me
"Mews!"
the ginger cat hissed at me before sprinting out of the room, for a minute, I felt guilty, until I noticed most of the spaghetti from last night was gone. "asshole!" I scoffed, pulling myself out of bed and got ready for the day. once my makeup and hair was done, I went into the kitchen and sat down across dustin. mom kept giving us weird looks, but I ignored it
"So " she stated, "how are you two getting to school?"
"my car!" you answered
"I'm riding my bike!" dustin responded
"by yourself? or with your friends?"
"with my friends,' dustin answered, giving mom a side-glance
"will you only go straight to school and back?"
"Mom!"
"I just want to know!"
"yes, I'll only go to school and back, but I have an AV club meeting," dustin reminded. "so I'll be home a little later!"
"if it goes any later than 6, I want you to call me and have me pick you up, ok?"
"ok," dustin mumbled
a car honk made us all jump in surprise, ending the conversation. I glanced through the window and, realizing it was nancy's car. "nancy, what she doing here?" you whisper
"uh looks like I'm not taking my car, nancy's actually here!" you say grabbing your bag and leather jacket and sprinted out, yelling "bye mom! bye dustin!"
"nance?" you say opening the car door letting yourself in. "what happened?"
"nothing, I was just coming this way and I thought 'huh let me pick up heather so she doesn't waste gas' and here I am"
"well thank you nance" you smile but quickly remembered last night. "let me guess, you were on house arrest last night?" I stated, throwing my bag in the back of her car
nancy huffed and nodded her head. "it's so stupid! I can see the younger kids not being allowed to go out but I know how to protect myself!"
"plus, you have harrington there to protect you," I teased, nancy rolled her eyes through there was a small sly smile. "I have a chemistry test today" she stated. "and I wasn't able to study last night. the cards are in my bag." I followed nancy's directions and grabbed some colorful cards, all containing some science- related questions
"an atom is considered to be blank when the number of protons and electrons are equal."
"neutral" she answered, barely missing a beat. we repeated that until we got into the school and barb took over
"when alpha particles go through gold foil, they become..."
"unoccupied space."
"you guys are going to ace this test, i promise," starting to get annoyed with all the science facts
"a molecule that can-"
barbs question was cut short by king steve making an entrance. he slipped the card from her hand and walked in front, studying it's message. tommy gave barb a wet-willy and attempted to give me one, but I smacked his hand away
"hey!" nancy cried
"I think you've studied enough, nance," steve stated
"steve-"
"I'm telling you nance, you've got this," he glanced up at her and gave her a comforting smile. my brows furrowed in disgust, I nudged barb in the arm
"now they're gonna study human anatomy!" I joked
barb and i chuckled before harrington spoke
"now more onto important matters"
"oh here we go, 'king steve is making an announcement, it must be important!" I gushed with a high pitch voice, rolling my eyes as my arms were across my chest
steve glared at me, and with his hands made a shooing motion. "yeah, yeah" he said annoyed. "as I was saying my dad has left town on a conference and my mom's gone with him 'cause you know, she doesn't trust him-'"
"good call," tommy snickered
"now I know where you got it from." you mumbled
"so are you in?"
"in for what?" nancy asked, her face confused
"no parents? big house?" carol offered. nancy still looked confused
"dingus is talking about a party," I informed
"ding ding ding!" carol mocked, I shot her a glare before turning back to the conversation
"it's tuesday."
"it's tuesday!" tommy mocked. "oh my-!"
"come on," steve begged. "It'll be lowkey. it'll just be us. what do you say? are you in, or are you out?
nancy looked torn for a second, glancing between steve and I. I raised an eyebrow, conveying the message that this was her choice, not mine
"um-"
"oh, gosh, look," carol interrupted
all six of us turned our attention to a figure near the bulletin board. I recognized him instantly, jonathan. though he looked worse than yesterday, with his bed head and dark bags underneath his eyes
"oh gosh, thats depressing," steve commented
"should we say something?" nancy asked
"I don't think he speaks," carol spat. I was disliking her more and more with each sentence she uttered
"how much you wanna bet he killed him?" tommy teased
you couldn't stand this anymore, being with this group of insensitive douches who only live off daddy's money. you turn to look at tommy. "tommy say something like that again, I blow your fucking brains out!" you say through gritted teeth before you walk over to him and place a hand on jonathan's shoulder
"that's a good picture of him," I pointed out, noticing the MISSING poster he was putting up. he glanced at me, giving me a smile
"yeah! I think so too."
nancy suddenly appeared beside me, clutching her books. jonathan looked at her, a small blush forming on her cheeks. "hey, I just wanted to im sorry about everything that happened," she admitted, looking at jonathan with her doe eyes. "everyone's thinking about you."
"yeah, were gonna find him in no time," I assured
"he's a smart kid." nancy added
the bell rang, breaking up our little discussion. I gave jonathan a smile and a side hug
"im going to find him," I promised
"i know you will,"
jonathan waved to both me and nancy before we turned around, ready to head to class. "ready to ace the chemistry test?" barb asked when we met up with her and the group
nancy smiled. "yep!"
"attention faculty and students," the intercom blared. "at 8:00 pm tonight, there will be an assembly out on the football field in support of will byers and his family. all are encouraged to attend!"
"I'd rather die than go to that," carol scoffed. i licked my teeth while giving carol a dirty look even though I surprisingly agreed with her, as much as I love and wanted to support the byers an assembly wasn't going to help with that
"volunteer signups for search parties are still available in the office,"
I wasn't going to do that either. ten million people searching from the same area wasn't going to find will. me going off on my own world with my own thoughts
we passed barb, nancy and carol's classes on the walk to biology, leaving me alone with steve and tommy. I attempted to ignore them, but they wouldn't stop bothering me
"you think you're gonna do anything to me henderson, just because your friends with that screw up? thinking you're scaring me and shit." tommy blurted
"what? jealous that I can actually make friends?" i snapped back
"hey, he's friends with me!" steve butted in
"no, he follows you around, it's all a big reputation game. you, harrington are the most popular kid in school. whoever follows you around instantly gets a little bit of fame. tommy h, carol, and even nicole are only with you because of your name." I gave one last glare before walking away from the duo
"I hope you know you aren't invited to steve's party!" tommy yelled
"you sound like a child!" you teased, turning around while balling your fist next to your cheek and moving it back and forth. as you kept walking you spoke again "you're just mad because i called you out!" you say flipping him off not even turning around to see his expression

the engine revving with a hum before slowly turning off, it's dark and cold, turning your head you stare at a familiar building, home.
parking your motorcycle, you get off then take your helmet off before holding it to your side, you stare, the lights on reflecting any reflections, then the door opens
"well well well look who it is" a familiar voice answers, "dustin, why are you up?" you say your voice in that questiony tone. dustin walks out of the house and onto the porch
"so my sister gets back from her so-called "life" in california and I can't greet her without her questioning me?" he says arms crossed and his voice in that high pitch tone. you walk over to him before patting his shoulder
"nice to see you too, dusty" before you pull him into a hug.
the sound of your engine pulling up to a familiar school, hawkins high. you park your motorcycle leaving familiar people to stare at you, your officially a junior now and you haven't changed one bit
you walk into the campus, going to your locker to get a book out, only to get interrupted by someone slamming the locker next to you and greeted by a familiar tension. "well well well henderson, long time no see ay?" steve says with a smile, god you hate that smile.
you look at your locker then steve then back at your locker again "should've kept it that way" you say ignoring his gaze on you. "oh really? are you mad because I'm talking to your friend, nancy?" steve says in a whisper. "fuck you steve" you scoff "you wish". you gave steve a dirty look and from the side tommy h spoke. "you know heather, for someone who is "emo" or whatever the hell you call it, you sure have a white girl, blond hair name" tommy says with a smirk
"well tommy, I'm not "emo" so fuck off and second, go fuck yourself." you say taking your books out and slamming your locker shut. and as you were about to turn around, carol spoke. "you know for someone who has a blond hair name and was so "sweet" and so "girly" in middle school. you sure do have a lot of rage in you" she says sucking on her lollipop looking at you up and down
"go to hell." you spit at them. carol snickered, tommy smirked and steve grined, shaking his head before speaking. "yeah, "so beautiful" has alot of rage, should call you "ms beauty and rage". steve said waiting for tommy and carol to laugh and when they did you just rolled your eyes
"yeah, ms "beauty and rage" i think thats perfect for little miss heather." she whines and even though it wasn't a bad nickname, you would rather be called by your last name then that "nickname". and before you can either say anything nancy comes around the corner
"heather, oh my god it's so nice to see you again" she says pulling you into a hug with her sweet voice, you hug her back flipping steve, carol and tommy all off before breaking the hug. "I have so much to tell you" she says grabbing your hand and before you and nancy were gonna walk away you heard steve's voice faded in the back. "don't forget to meet in the bathroom in ten!"
"okay!" nancy shouted with a sly smile. "where's barb?" trying to change the subject your eyebrows knitted together. "shes around the corner but guess what. me and steve are talking" she says excited with a big grin on her face. "that's nice but c'mon nancy! steve harrington? really?" you say trying so hard to be happy for your friend who's dating a complete douchebag but failed
"chill out heather, we're just talking!" nancy chuckled back. even though I couldn't see her, I could already imagine the blush spreading across her face paired with her cheesy grin
"making out is just talking? wow nancy, harrington is definitely trying to corrupt you in a way, seriously what were you doing when I was gone in california for two months?" she laughed while you rolled your eyes
"oh please, you think he's cute too", she teased. "yeah, when I first met him in the seventh grade but that was four years ago, and I've since came to realize he's a complete douchebag with no real personality, shitty attitude and parents money. looks arent everything you know." you replied
"he has a personality!" nancy argued. "oh yeah? besides being a playboy?"
"yeah well he's nice-"
"only to you."
"and he's considerate-"
"again, only to you."
"and-."
"face it nance, he has no personality" you say interrupting, crossing your arms together across your chest, and as the conversation came to a stop and barbara came around the corner, you and barbara were exchanging a conversation and nancy giving little comments here and there and as you kept talking about california and how your officially a junior with sophomore friends you didn't even realize that nancy was gone. "wheres nance?" you say stopping your steps, turning your head looking around for her. "probably with steve, making out" she replies back
you sigh before speaking "I don't get it, what does she see in him, one he's a player. two he's not even in her or your grade. third, there are tons of other cute guys in both your grade and mine. four-." and as you were about to list another reason what nancy sees in steve barb cut you off mid sentence
"I get it heather, you hate steve. I don't understand what she sees in him too" barb replies with a sigh. "it's just the only "good" thing about him is his looks, and even then, there are millions more people that are way better looking than him. I mean c'mon, johnny depp, charlie sheen, and even patrick swayze all exist. how can she even glance at steve harrington?"
"exactly" barb agreed. "he only wants to get in her pants'
"that's what I keep telling her! but she goes 'no, he's better than that! or 'no, I won't let that happen! I mean, she's not stupid, right?"
barb and I gossiped about harrington and nancy for what felt like hours, talking about absolute crap on him, in fact
we probably could've talked for another minute if the bell hadn't rung to go to class. me and barb both said our goodbyes and went our separate ways
as I parked my motorcycle and opened the front door I preheated some leftovers from yesterdays lasagna dinner and when I turned dustin was back, his head was flying around looking around for something
"hey, did will come back here?"
"no, I haven't seen him," I responded, my eyebrows scrunched in confusion. "why?"
"well, we made a bet that if will got here first, he would get one of my comic books, he probably just went home."
"yeah probably" I turned back to the microwave where my plate of lasagna was at, but I couldn't shake the feel that something was off. "just to be sure, do you know what the byers number is?"
dustin closed his eyes in concentration. i waited for a few seconds, until he sighed, "no, I don't remember what it is."
"don't you guys have a walkie talkie?"
"oh! right!" dustin ran to the couch and grabbed the device. he tried speaking into it, but something wasn't working. "what's wrong?"
"the batteries are dead" he mumbled. "do you know where any more are?"
"in that drawer" I answered, pointing to the location, "but I'm sure will is fine! im probably just overreacting! I mean, we live in hawkins where literally nothing happens! now, if you excuse me while I just try to eat-"
"your right, your right, will is probably fine." dustin interrupted. "but I'm still going to replace the batteries, in case there's an emergency." as dustin walked off to find batteries in the drawer you headed to your room with your plate. "I'm doing homework. moms gonna be home in an hour. if you need anything I'll be in my room."
I closed my door, plopped on my bed, pulled out the endless stack of papers, and began to work on them. this was going to be a long night
"heather! HEATHER! wake up!"
"NO!"
the banging on the door only became louder, ricocheting in my brain, groggily, I pulled myself out of bed and to the door, swinging it open
"nancys coming to pick you up in twenty minutes." dustin stated
"why I'm taking my motorcycle?" you say eyebrows scrunched
"well I kinda rode my bike and accidentally maybe scratched or maybe made a dent in it." dustin says shrugging his shoulders
"DUSTIN! WHAT THE HELL!"
"sorry"
"well thanks I guess" I flatly said. I slammed the door back in his face to get dressed. the papers from last night were spread across the floor, some of them crinkled along the edges. i threw them into my bag before rushing down the hall to my bathroom
there was enough time to blowout my hair and do my eyeshadow, blush, lipstick and the rest of my makeup before my mom called my name
"heather, honey, are you awake?" my mom asked, her voice drifting from my room down to where I was
"yes?" I called. "I'm getting ready right now!", her footsteps carried down to the bathroom door. she knocked, and when I didn't object she opened the door, her blonde hair was tied up in curlers, and she had about half a face of makeup done. "breakfast is in the kitchen," she informed. a smile on her face. "bacon and eggs with toast!"
"ok! thank you!" I applied the last bit of makeup, then bolted into the kitchen. dustin was sitting at the table, an empty plate in front of him. I piled some food on my plate and sat down next to him, shoving the food in my month. "tell nancy I don't need a ride." dustin ordered a hint of bitterness in his voice
"you weren't gonna get a ride anyways" you snark back, rolling your eyes. "oh gee thanks, got your beauty sleep in." he replied, rolling his eyes back
you flipped him off before dustin spoke again. "I'm riding my bike to school, something you can't do." you flipped him off once again, mouth full of food. you swallowed your food down and continued to eat, constantly checking out the window for nancy's car to pull up. and when her car pulled up, you force the food down your mouth, grabbing your leather jacket off the hook and ran out the door. "bye mom, bye dusty." I yelled. slamming the door behind me
i bounded out to nancy's car and jumped in the passengers seat
"where's dustin?" she asked
"said he doesn't need a ride plus the little shit made a dent in my bike. still love him though." you rolled your eyes at the thought, throwing your bag onto the empty seat. "where's mike?"
"he said he was riding his bike to school, something about an AV club meeting?"
"oh yeah! dustin was telling me about that" I recalled, remembering a few days ago at his overly excited face when he talked about some long-distance radio they were expecting
the car was silent for about a minute when nancy questioned. "hey, did you get a call from joyce byers this morning?"
"um, no why?" the feeling from the night before startled to settle in my stomach, displacing my breakfast
"she asked us if will had stayed over, and of course he didn't and we thought maybe he was at yours?" she said looking at the road then at the revere mirror. I shook my head ready to throw up my breakfast " no we thought he just went home, maybe he's at lucas's?" even out loud, I knew the idea wasn't reliable. the sinclair's lived the opposite way of the byers
why would will go down to his house, only to turn back and hang with lucas? "joyce also said he could've just gone to school early," nancy offered. "if he wasn't at lucas's he's probably just at school"
"yeah probably," I agreed. the vomit was clawing up my throat. I looked out the window, trying to settle my stomach. will is just at school, I thought. nothing bad had happened to him and I'm just overthinking this, right? about five minutes later, we were at the school.
nancy and I grabbed our bags, but we just sat there, waiting for the other to say something, anything maybe. "I hope will's ok." I confessed. the sinking feeling in my stomach going even deeper. "im sure he is," nancy insured. "he probably went to school early to get some work done."
"i hope so." I clutched my book bag strap tighter and exited the car. nancy following too, we walked into the highschool. "hey, there you two are!" barb greeted, meeting us on our walk to the locker. "I've been waiting here forever!"
"by forever don't you mean-" I stole a quick look at my watch- "five minutes" I say eyebrows raised. all three of us laughed, opening our lockers. "so nancy, are you and steve...?" barb trailed off, yet both of us knew exactly what she meant
"no barb, we are not official yet," nancy admitted, carefully placing her books into her locker. "even though you guys have made out?" I commented. a small yet annoyed smile broke on nancy's face. "it was one time-" I raised one eyebrow while giving her a "yeah right" look compelling nancy to tell the truth. "many times actually" I commented
"seriously, you're gonna be so cool now" barb sighed, pulling out random books from her locker. "i mean you were popular already, but now that you're with steve-"
"you better not hang with tommy h. or carol," I advised, grabbing my needed items. "no ew! gross!" nancy gagged 'you couldn't pay me to hang out or become friends with them." nancy finished, grabbing her supplies and was about to shut her locker when I noticed a folded note. I pointed at it and asked. "what's that?"
nancy confused, grabbing the paper and opened it, silently reading the writing, in blue ink wrote, meet me. bathroom -steve. I playfully nudged nancy in the arm, though I was mentally rolling my eyes. "proved my point" i teased. nancy rolled her eyes at me, a small smile on her lip. she shut her locker and went to the bathroom
"is she really doing this?" barb sighed walking with me towards class
"I guess she is." I shook my head
I'd been sitting in my class for about seven minutes when harrington walked in. his usual perfect hair was slightly ruffled, and he had a smirk plastered on his face. he took his usual spot behind me, loudly pulling out supplies. "could you be any louder?" I snapped, whipping back to face him
in response, he dropped his textbook a foot above his desk, glared at me, then continued to spread his supplies all over his desk, I rolled my eyes and glanced back at him
"you know henderson, I think you're just jealous." the teacher had started explaining the lesson, but I ignored him. Instead I slightly turned and whispered. "oh yeah? what makes you say that harrington?"
"just the fact that your best friend is about to get laid tonight," he said casually, "and you haven't had your first kiss yet."
"i actually have had my first kiss," I corrected, my eyes glued to the board. "just because I don't go around telling everyone and begging for attention doesn't mean I have no love-life"
"oh yeah? when was the last time you've been in a steady relationship?"
when the last sentence flew out of his mouth, you turned to look at him. "a little over a year ago. when's the last time you got with someone that didn't want you in their pants?"
"Mr Harrington and Ms. Henderson!"
both mine and harrington's attention snapped to the front of the room, falling upon our very-annoyed looking teacher. his foot was tapping impatiently against the floor, his arms rolled across his chest
"do you have something you would like to share to the class?"
"no, well besides harrington over here being a dumbass, don't think so"
"oh, I'm the dumbass?"
"well I didn't stutter and I did say your last name, so I assume so? see your proving my point right now!"
"Henderson!" the teacher yelled
"no, heather was definitely talking about getting laid!" tommy cracked
you turned to him, frustrated and mad. "and if I was at least I'll have some fun tonight unlike you, who hasn't got laid since freshman year" you snarked
the teacher's face was completely shocked while some students laughed, including harrington. and your frustration kept growing
"hall. NOW!"
I rose from the desk, anger in my eyes and walked out of the classroom, making sure to slam the door. I was standing outside for a minute before the teacher and harrington came out, shutting the door behind me. "listen, I get that Mr Harrington here is "king of hawkins". but that doesn't mean that everyone wants to hear your love-life," the teacher sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose
"there's a time and place for that discussion, and my classroom is neither. Understood.?"
"understood." harrington and I grumbled in unsion. "your good to go back to class, I want to talk to Ms. Henderson a little longer."
harrington walked back to class, before he opened the door, he smirked while I flipped him off. "Ms Henderson, I have to say, I'm slightly disappointed in you, saying that stuff, in my class, how harrington is stupid and what your plans are for tonight, not only that but you threw up obscene gestures at Mr. Harrington for seemingly no reason."
"no reason? no there was a reason behind what I said and what I did." you said crossing your arms together. "and I mean you can't say I'm wrong for calling him stupid?"
"now henderson, I'm not answering that but I've heard the news that he's taken an interest in your friend, and I understand that you might be a little jealous-"
"jealous?" I interrupted, scoffing. "If I was jealous, I must've been under a spell because no way in hell I would be jealous of daddy's money over there."
"oh? then what is it?"
"not jealousy, that's for sure. and a little bit of hatred. I just don't like his shitty attitude or him. he acts like everyone owes him something, and trust I can't wait to laugh in his face when I see him in the streets in the future when I'm a millionaire!" you say picking at your nails
the teacher sighed again, almost like he was trying to think what he should say. after a few seconds, he stated, "your attitude has been off the roof lately. first it was the language, then the gestures and now spilling both harrington and your business."
"well it's not my fault harrington makes me so mad, why don't you give him this lecture and not me, I'm standing up for myself and I get this stupid lecture?"
"stop. heather, I mean it. fix the attitude or change my class, it's up to you to decide. and yes I will give harrington the lecture but you needed it more than him." he said walking back into the classroom, leaving me alone with my thoughts, do I skip? or go back in his class and face harrington and his little minion?
i quietly walked back into the classroom, ignoring the millions of pairs of eyes that were on me, and took my seat again. the teacher gave me a look before continuing the lesson
"hey henderson!" I ignored tommy h. and continued writing down notes. "Henderson!"
"Mr. Hagan, please stop talking to ms henderson," the teacher scolded, "and focus on the assignment." and as the teacher turned his back to the chalkboard tommy spoke again
"hey henderson how's your boyfriend?"
"how's your grade?"
tommys face went beet red, highlighting the many freckles he had on his face. I smirked, tommy got even redder. "I'd be careful how you talk to me." he whispered. " I could ruin your entire reputation."
"oh yeah? I heard that a million time." you say rolling your eyes. "the only reason why you're popular is because your friends with king steve over here. acting like you both run this shitty place, 'cause you really don't."
tommy was about to make another snide comment before harrington commented. "dude, let it be don't need "ms beauty and rage" to get us in more trouble
I turned my head to look at tommy "go on," I smiled. "listen to your king!"

a.s/n.. last post of the year🥲

you were watching a christmas movie marathon, snuggled up in the couch with a warm blanket, chris was in the kitchen making hot coco
then you heard a scream, even a loud thud and chris calling your name
chris- y/nn, he yells
you didn't give him a response instead jumping off the couch and running towards the kitchen, as you entered chris stopped you
you were at the doorway to the kitchen
y/n- what happened, you say panicking
chris doesn't say anything, instead smirking and pointing up, and as you look up you see a mistletoe right under where you and chris we're standing
you gently hit chris arms, rolling your eyes as you huff
y/n- your dumb, you say walking away
chris smirked and snatched the mistletoe and walked over to you, making it hover over the two of you
y/n- chris, you say crossing your arms over your chest
chris- just one, he pleads
you huff in annoyance but kiss him anyways, as you came closer to his cheek he moved his face so now his lips were in front
you kissed him but didn't realize he switched, so when you kissed his lips, you froze and pushed back
y/n- chris, you yell
chris ran away, laughing before saying "love ya"

stocking stuffer- matt s
summary... the stockings aren't the only thing getting stuffed
⚠︎ smut, unprotected pnv
divider- @uglylittledoll
𝔀𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓶𝓪𝓼 𝓶𝓪𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓱𝓸𝓷 ☃︎8
your filling the stockings with candy and other stuff, christmas eve isn't until a couple of days and the stockings are empty
matt walks up from behind you, his hands finding your waist and him giving you gentle kisses on your neck
matt- what you doing?, he says hugging you from the back
y/n- stuffing stockings, you say still stuffing the stockings
matt- stuffing stockings eh?, he says pulling his face out from your neck to look at you
y/n- yes, you say not looking at him
matt doesn't say anything else instead leaving wet sloppy kisses all over your neck, his hands traveling all over your body, squeezing your ass and your boobs before he goes under your shirt
your head falls back as you moan, poking your ass so now his dick is in-between your cheeks, matt takes this as a sign, he unbuckles his belt quickly in one motion
he took his boxers off and gently started stroking himself, matt lifted your skirt and started lining himself up, he slowly went in and slowly rocked his hips, going at a steady pace
you moaned but told him to go faster, and he did. increasing the pace, you moaned, your back arching at the pleasure, matt loved when you made those pretty little noises
matt went in deeper and faster, circling your clit at a steady speed, you moaned, the pleasure being too much, your legs were shaking and your eyes started rolling back
y/n- close, is all you can make out
matt- I know, he says increasing his pace
matt started circling your clit harder and faster, making you moan louder and uncontrollably
and before you were gonna speak again, the band in your stomach snapped leaving your seed to travel across your thighs down to your legs
matt thrusted a few more times before he reached his own, and once he pulled out he scraped the cum off your legs and stuffed it back in you
matt- looks like the stockings weren't the only thing getting stuffed, huh?, he jokes
