Leave Me Loving You, Jackson Wang (via lunamonchtuna)
“Yes.” It was nice to see her too, but it was much too hot for hugs, and he was thankful that their half of an embrace only lasted for a brief moment before they were relieved by the cool air in her car. When overheating, his neck and arms were affected by a rosacea-like freckling that slowly eased once reintroduced to a cool breeze. In addition to this, he had become afflicted by a harsh fatigue—whether this was the jet-lag or the heat was anybody’s guess.
Outside the window he enjoyed the view of soaring palm trees, chaparral infested hills, and the most iconic characteristic of LA—a heavily congested freeway. Compared to the slow pace of Winchester, LA felt like a city of anarchy which brought him no sense of tranquility but rather immense stress, especially with Kiera behind the wheel. That, and the car culture dominated over human decency, and with that came the excessive honking and yelling of profanities.
“This is hell! I don’t understand how you live here.” He finally said after a long silence between them, nothing but the hum of the car’s motor to fill in the spaces. “You haven’t come to England in ages, it would be such a refreshing retreat for you. But rather, I come here and am forced to face America’s obsession with constant stimulation.” So it began, his first long-winded complaint. “Not only that, but every kilometer is another bloody billboard. I might be able to enjoy the scenery were it not for the free reign private companies have over your environment.” He knew she likely didn’t disagree with this, so he felt it safe to continue the passing of judgement.
He gnawed on his hunger. The airplane food was repulsive to him and he hadn’t eaten in sixteen hours, but he feared imposing so he said nothing. Rather, he pulled a cigarette from his satchel. “Do you have a lighter, or do you just puff on those vapes now?”
Tongue clicked, an obvious sign of annoyance bubbling under her skin. She tried not to let the combination of typical impatient drivers who honked and yelled silently and Arthur's clear distrust for her ability to keep them both alive bother her. "I enjoy the chaos, you grow used to it after a while." It was true, the stimulation that was overwhelming to those not accustomed to the city, but a normalcy to the residents. She thrived best under pressure, and driving on the highway was nothing to her. Keira's always been one to find peace among chaotic situations, so long as she wasn't directly involved in them.
"Sorry that California wasn't one of the four states that banned them," He wasn't wrong, she missed the scenery of the states before the billboards came up with stupid advertisements, but what could you do? Flicking on the turning signal and merging, not that it would have mattered due to the slow approach of the bumper to bumper crawl. It gave her the time to open the center console, occasionally looking away from the road to grab the lighter sitting under a packet of rolling paper and offering it to him. "I always have one."
Turning off the highway when the exit finally approached and "I had debated going to Europe before you messaged me. I probably would have ended up in England, but I assumed you wouldnt want me imposing on you."

Keira's always been an outdoor type of person. She enjoys camping and purposefully turning off her mobile data so that she can't be contacted, but it's always the fact that if the sun is out, she's out and about doing something that interests her. If she doesn't come back with a wicked sun burn, she isn't having fun yet.
Tell my muse what their flaws are!
The following day as promised, he had landed in her territory. The flight was unpleasant, turbulent, and by the time his eight hour trip had ascended, the entire cabin had an oniony scent that he feared would stick onto him even after he were to leave his seat. He knew first class would have been worth it, but he so often inflicted his own suffering for no reason at all, and so suffer he did.
Awaiting permission to leave the aircraft, he texted Kiera to let her know that he was due to enter the actual airport in twenty-minutes. He regretted thinking that she was doomed to drive endlessly in a loop until that time (what hell airports were, he loathed how poorly planned they often were), but it was out of his control. Travel was always a burden not only to the traveler, but to any local he was dependent upon.
Once successfully outside, he sprayed himself conservatively with a small bottle of fragrance (Kenzo Pour Homme) to mask the lingering odor of other passengers. The sun was unpleasantly bright on his eyes and he was immediately sweltering. The temperatures never exceeded this in England and he was very intolerant of extremes on both sides of the spectrum.
When finally they managed to find one another, Arthur hoisted his luggage into her car and joined her in the passenger seat. “Nice seeing you,” He said, offering a friendly press of his cheek to hers. “Thank you for retrieving me.”
First rule of going to an airport - always show up long before you're due to be there. Too many missed flights told experience, the hell airports are with far too many people and workers doing the bare minimum to make the ordeal worse. Even if she wasn't the one going into the terminals, there was nothing worse than airport parking and the people who took their sweet time in actually moving. It's fine, it's fine - it would have been a bigger inconvenience had she left later.
Car parked and air conditioning set on high, all she had was time on her hands. Spent mostly doom scrolling on tiktok and playing catch up on what she's been missing at work, only catching Arthur's text when her thumb swiped down to check on her notifications. Sending a thumbs up emoji and telling him that she was there, to take his time. Like it were avoidable, but if she knows him well enough, his patience was nearing an incredibly thin line. Air travel had its advantages as deeply as its inconvenience, but she didn't mind waiting. It gave her the chance to mentally prepare herself, never knowing what'll be the first thing she'd have to put up with.
He's not difficult to notice among a crowd, Keira could have found him anywhere blindfolded. Adjusting her seat to properly sit up again, phone and vape placed in one of the cupholders, unlocking the backseat and passanger side doors as he approached. The cologne hit her first, resisting the urge to sneeze from how heavy it was in comparison to her own perfume. It was still preferable in comparison to the strangers he no doubt suffered besides.
"Don't sweat it." Funny, because she could definitely tell he was not prepared for the heat or the sun. California heat was rough, but in the height of summer? There was no relief to be found. "It's good to see you." One arm draped over his shoulders when he leaned close, a half hug she hadn't expected to give, but it was too late to take it back now.

an accurate depiction of keira calling one of her girlie's for help
There was a pause after her generous offer, and over the line he was rolling his eyes and sighing into the receiver. How offended he felt! Arthur felt personally abased by her attempts to throw money at him, as if he was some common plebeian. While he didn’t know her specific financial situation, he thought it foolish of her to think he was facing instability of any kind. This served as a reason to investigate her true impressions of him.
“Don’t be serious.” He puffed, “I don’t need money from you.” Arthur was older and had just chalked up the assumption that, as a young person, Kiera was irresponsible and frivolous with her purchases. Well, he was not this way, and he did not appreciate her passing judgement so wantonly. Perhaps the men she welcomed into her life were broke and unaccomplished, their working-class charm exciting her with their beat up motorcycles and paisley bandanas. The idea left a bad taste in his mouth, but he reminded himself that his imagination was again wondering into a world of hypothetical fiction.
Catching himself, and out of fear of being over-the-top, he recentered himself and calmly returned to the conversation after a second long meditation.
“I do appreciate you considering me.” He managed, “I’ll purchase a ticket tomorrow and arrive by the following morning.” He said this with indifference, though clandestinely his excitement did stir. It had been a considerable chunk of time since he had last seen her, and a small part of him did miss her company.
All he had to say was no, not be offended or irritated at a simple question. She wasn't insinuating anything by asking.. It was a genuine offer.. and she felt it thrown back at her face like it was such a stupid thing to ask.
"Okay, I didn't think it'd be a big deal. I got it." It was an offer she'd extend to anyone who was planning a visit, it's what she does, because she knows it's an inconvenience for everyone else. The states aren't exactly everyone's favorite destination.. It wasn't insulting to have someone offer to pay, but maybe because it was her that offered that made him so irate. Did she know Arthur could afford it on his own? Of course, but as could she. He's never been approving of her lifestyle, figuring it was dirty money, but it spent all the same. She was smart about her financial situation, just because she was young didn't entirely mean she was reckless. Whatever.. He can say his peace, she'll pretend it didn't bother her and bite her tongue. Difficult as it was.
Silence grows heavy, either he hung up without her knowing.. or they just sat uncomfortably listening to one another breathe. Keira felt awkward now, a rarity these days.. but she never knows what to expect when she's talking with Arthur. It feels as though she's a child all over again.. Aching for a brief moment of approval, something from him that would make it feel okay.
"Yeah, that sounds good. Be sure to let me know, so I can meet you." Was it a mistake to let him come? Maybe, but she wanted him here. She missed him, despite the petty squabbles and indifferent attitude he presented. It's been a while and it shows, she genuinely missed being around him and how easy he made everything feel. For how they argued, there was a real connection there they could never put proper words to.
