Intro to lit

Finishing M. Butterfly has made me think of numerous amount of things. One of the things that was brought to my attention when reading it was what people would believe when they are in love. Even though Some may have not came right out and said it but I know that he loved Gallimard. Song may had been a good actor but there is no way he could fake those emotions, those feelings, the rawness. Gallimard was so in love with Song that he believed that song was a women. Love will make you do absolutely crazy things. This was an amazing readings and its something I would tell me friends about. It gave me so many different emotions during the read and it kept me on my toes. What I loved best about this, is that it kept me waiting more. I wanted to know how things were going to end with Song and Gallimard. Overall such an amazing read.

Comp II

Barbara Neal Varma's "Complaining, for Your Health” was an amazing read. It was incredible how well Varma’s was able to write this article. What made me think about it is when she brought up how some people complain for others.”they use their complaints, in other words, to manipulate how others may see them”(Varma par. 7). The reason why it made me think was because it made me reevaluated my complaints to others. I believe that I am one of those types of complainers. I completely care about what others may think of me and complaining is the perfect way to down play my actions. For example, I would complain about my work load and everyone would pity me but yet I had these assignments for weeks. Yet, there are plenty of times where I just need to get the complaint off my chest. Sometimes I don't want people to give me advice or anything. I simply want to feel better about what has been causing me pain. I understand each part of complaining that Varma had brought up. This was an amazing reading and I completely and utterly enjoyed it.

Comp II

 I am nineteen years old and for some odd reason I completely relate to “What I think and feel at 25″ by Scott Fitzgerald. One of the things that really stuck out to me is when he talked about being a completely different person at the age of thirty. “ When I'm thirty I won't be this me”( Fitzgerald line 25).  I look back on my life and realize that when I was simply sixteen years old I was not the same person as I am today. I am forever changing just like him. I thought this story was phenomenal. He used humor to talk about something so relatable. I also like when he talked about being vulnerable but also I believe that even at the age that I am at now that I'm vulnerable in every way. Also, he was going at the point if view of men and I am not a men so I see how it is different. This story was written well and I applaud it.

Intro to Lit

One of my favorite quotes come from modern poetry. “and if you don't like me as do you; I understand. because who would really choose a daisy in a field full of roses?” (Julie Martinez). I connect with this quote in the almost way possible. The content is even in my own poetry. I saw myself as a daisy and all of the people I interact with as roses. No one ever noticed me. I was the girl you would talk to just so you could get closer to my friends. Reading a quote like this made me feel like I actually belong. I am not the only daisy. The older I got I realize It wasn't a bad thing to be a daisy. I may be different and I may stick out but it’s okay. I found someone who adores daisies in every single way. It was me and I'm utterly okay with it.

Comp II

Brenna Twohy once said “To love me is to love a haunted house, it’s fun to visit once a year but no one wants to live there”. This quote perfectly describes my week because I have been dealing with relationships so much this week. It first started off with my friend getting mad at me. It was a Monday night and the air was a bit chilly. It was in West Common’s kitchen with two other strangers watching in on our discussion. Suddenly, I could see the anger in his eyes as I watched him get up and leave. We had spent the whole weekend together when out of nowhere he had enough. I am the type of person that when someone puts me on paper I look really good on paper but in person I am hard to deal with. I push boundaries and I talk about subjects that I shouldn't. To add on to that I also had to deal with the person I am “dating”. There’s quotations around dating because I honestly don't know what we are. Which tends to cause a numerous amount of anxiety. This week I could feel her pulling away and there was nothing I could do. She has left me before because I just wasn't good enough. You see, she is my favorite type of drug. I know that she's bad but I continue to stay because I just can't get enough. I am the haunted house. Everyone that I know loves the idea of me. Yet, they are too scared to stay.

The Poem “The First Kiss of Love” by Lord Byron was phenomenal to read. One part of the poem that truly stuck out to me was “I court the effusions that spring from the heart,
Which throbs, with delight, to the first kiss of love (Byron par 4). To put in my words he is saying that this first kiss made him overflow with love. When I read this I utterly agree. Sometimes when anyone happened to kiss the right person it is so powerful that it could move mountains. I am a big believer in love. In my eyes it’s a feeling that we should fight for. I could be extremely optimistic about the thought of love but when it’s true love, it is worth it all. This poem itself is still relevant to today’s society. Society is brainwashed by what they see on tv to even know what real love is. The love they talk about is not what real love is. Real love is many things but once you actually experience it yourself it is life changing.

Comp II

In the movie Smoke Signals it talks about the importance of a man and his hair. “an indian man aint nothing with out his hair” this scene exactly happens when Victor is trying to teach Thomas how to be an real Indian’s. They are on the bus on the way to go get Victors fathers belongings. Ealier in the movie they express that theres no need for money. This scene happens when Victors mom is asking Victor did he cash the check. She proceeds to talk about how that’s all she has. Lastly, in this movie they talk about Indian time. This came up when the radio man was telling the morning announcements and talked about how it was eight am Indian time.

In this movie it espouse many different cultural differences. For example, In my culture we cut our hair just because. It’s not as important as it is in this movie. Another difference would be that money is very important in my culture. Its how we live and its how we survive. In this movie money isn't that important because they live on a reservation. They have there basic needs paid for. Lastly, in my culture we are very punctual and time is super important but in the movie time is an estimated not an exact.

Intro to Lit

In the Sound and Sense by Alexander Pope he talks about how writing comes from art and not by chance. “True ease in writing comes from art, not chance ”(Pope par. 1). I understand where he is coming from but I somewhat disagree. I would agree that writing itself is art but I do not think it comes from art, at least not in some cases. In my point of view writing is merely a stress reliever. It’s a coping mechanism that once you step back and look at what you created it’s art. I believe that a lot of times it truly does chance. By chance I went through pain, I wrote it down and thus created art. Pope’s poem was extremely beautiful and creative. I was in awe with his word choices and his style of writing. I misunderstood what he his thought was on writing. Overall I adore his work.

Comp II

Love is such a weird experience, yet we all have to go through it and we all have different outcomes of it. In Salaam, Love by Haroon Moghul he falls in love even though he was going behind his parents just to be with this one girl. He experiences love In a different way that I had experienced love, yet we had the same ending. I was completely in awed with this story because we all had that first love that changed your way of thinking. He dated her for a short period of time and yet it took forever for her to get off his mind. “My college friends, who met me a few months later, can tell you it took me a year to get over a girl I dated for less than two month”(Mogul par 20). This story spoke volumes to me because I know what it’s like to risk it all for someone. So, in a way I see myself in him. Without even knowing me he touched my heart. This was a phenomenal story.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Stetson was a phenomenal short story. What makes this story so amazing is the setting. If this exact same thing happened in 2018 would the same outcome occur? Of course not because the setting itself makes up such a big part of this. If this happened in a time like today they would know that she’s just depressed and get her some antidepressants. Since this happened so long ago in the past it plays such a huge role in it. Also, In this short story it really shows America how they thought of women back then. This woman is completely depressed but yet they throw her in a room isolated from the world. How could her husband claim that he loved her but completely isolate her? That doesn’t seem much like love. Lastly the yellow wallpaper itself is such an iconic symbol of her mental state. She even spends hours looking at this wallpaper. “Lay there for hours trying to decide whether that front pattern and back pattern really did move together or separately”(Stetson 653). With out even noticing it this wallpaper itself was driving her to insanity. This story is great because it such little characteristic that if you tried to change it, the story would fall apart.

In the open mic Dave Chappell’s discuss the topic of racism. He starts off with talking about the different types of whistling white and black people do while working. With out physically saying it he shows that the type of whistling white people do is more joyful and cheerful. Meanwhile the way that black people whistling has more hard work and labor into it. Futhering going on to his topic on racism he proceeds to talk about racism in the south and in the north. He communicates that racism in the south is more out in the open. In the south if someone had a racist thought about you, you would know it. He uses humor to announce how amazing it is to have racism out in the open. After, he talks about how the north should be more like south. He promotes that the north should say what’s on their mind but with limits. Later on, he gives an example of a black man walking up to a white man saying “hello you white oppressor, you slave master rapist of Africa” (Chappelle). He proceeds to go on but he entire point was that the north would be more open but to an extent.

With being an African American I love the way he uses humor to mask what’s really going on. Racism is still alive and thriving in America. His appeal was to just be in the open about it and say what’s on your mind. I can see where he is coming from because racism is never going to die. There is always going to be a group of people that is utterly racist and will carry that hate down and down generations. By making it open you could see how truly people feel towards you and you can decided not to associate with me. This logic could work because it lets everyone know how they feel about each other. Even if it’s negatively. Also, there is also a flaw in this logic a because it’s going to divide up a nation. So, the question is whether or not you would like it in your face or behind your back. Either way it’s going to happen. Might as well know what people are saying about you.

Dave’s Barry Lost in the Kitchen is honestly such a representation of my life. I loved the way he wrote this because everything I read I could see completely in my own family. Especially with the older generations as in my grandparents. My granddad would have the grill and that was his man cave and well my grandma had the kitchen. The two never crossed. Other than when my granddad wanted to prove to us he knows a little something about cooking. He would go in with his infamous meal steak and potatoes. Which all of the grandad kids adored. “I think most males rarely prepare food for others and when they do, they have their speciality dish.” (Barry par. 8). This story is a true representation of that. I am pleased with the way that this was written because it points out numerous amount of stereotypes. In this short story you saw both spectrums of the men being in the kitchen stereotypes. Dave’s Barry lost in the kitchen was hilarious and very profound.

Intro to lit

While reading The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorn one thing struck my mind and that’s the extent you'll go for love. I honestly believe Georgiana wasn't just the pretty girl that had nothing going for her. I believe she truly and utterly loved Aylmer. She had all types of men that wanted her and chose Aylmer. That’s why she did whatever he asked because in a way she didn't think he will steer her in the wrong direction. The problem was that Aylmer didn't love Georgiana. She even said it herself. “You cannot love what shocks you!"(Hawthorn par 6). So she's not completely dumb but you can definitely feel that she loves him so much that it doesn't matter what he says or does she’ll follow him anywhere. Now while Aylmer was too busy trying to change her he didn't realize what he had until it was gone. The thing that got me was that after she died he didn't feel any type of remorse. He never deserved the love she gave out.

Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway is phenomenal because once you digest what the actual story is about you have a different idea of each character. In the Hills Like White Elephants the setting takes off in a train station in Spain. What makes this story so spectacular is that during the whole time you're not quiet sure what they could be talking about until you take a step back and actually think about. Once I realize this story was about a man wanting this girl to get an abortion it made me think differently about him. He is telling her all these lies about them being the same after the procedure. There is no way that they could just pick up where it left off once they have the abortion. Abortions changes people and to add to that they we’re in a time that kind of thing was frown upon. The man proceeds to tell the girl “We could have the world”(Hemingway pg 3). By saying all these sweet things about them having the world and how he will love her after is just messing with her mind. He is doing whatever he can to persuade this girl because she doesn't quiet know what she wants to do just yet. I wasn't that fond of his character. I believe he should just man up and let this girl decided instead of pressuring her. This story was outstanding because it actually made me think and made me question how I felt about the characters.

Guy code

In the short story Bros before Hos’, Michael Kimmel’s talks about the characteristic of being a man. He asked varies of men what is the qualification of being a men. He soon found out that most men believe that men aren't able to have any emotions other than anger. “Unifying emotional subtext of all these aphorism involves never showing emotion or admitting to weakness”(Kimmel pg 609).  Once men have crossed that line of showing emotion or admitting to weakness then they are classified as a woman, faggot or even a sissy. This means being happy, sad, depressed or even anxious means that they aren't a man. These are all human qualities that we all have but instead men cannot express it. They have to keep everything bottle up which can cause countless amount of mental issues. This is important to our society today. Were teach our kids this and its an ongoing occurrence of being deprived of simple human emotions. As a feminist I believe that men should have the equal rights as women to be able to show emotion. Showing emotion doesn't mean you aren't a man. Matter of fact you're a stronger man to go against what society says. We have the power to change the status quo but it starts with yourself. Michael Kimmel was completely right when he wrote this article but now it’s time for us to change it.
