Universal Magnetic Show, Start Of Year Events Round-Up For February 2016

Here is a quick blog update briefly highlighting two events that the Universal Magnetic Crew were really stoked to be a part of at the start of 2016 in the month of February!

Absent Ruins: An Absence of Presence, And A Presence Of Absence, Sunday 21st February, 2016.

Through the medium of poetry, dance and spoken word, Bristol and South West UK performers and artists gathered at the Arnolfini (Centre For The Contemporary Arts In Bristol) to give voice to personal reflections and provocative politics. The event was presented by Bristol-based artist Libita Clayton who described Absent Ruins as a response to John Akomfrah’s video Installation Vertigo Sea which opened at the Arnolfini in January 2016.

The performance featured artists such as Ralph Hoyte, Dr. Edson Burton, Solomon O.B, Cleo Lake, Moussa Kouyate, Akulah Agbami, Dionne Draper and Valda Jackson. As well as partnering with online magazine’s Gal-Dem and Nocturnal also Ujima Radio and Film curator/programming collective Come The Revolution and of course, Universal Magnetic.

Benjamin One and Awkward collaborated with Libita Clayton to craft a sonic-composition-performance-art-piece, exploring themes of shared culture, the cities literal and musical geography and history; inertia, presence and resistance.

Wishing On A Star - Fresh 4 In Conversation: The Fringe At Watershed As Part Of BBC Radio 6 Music Festival In Bristol, UK, Sunday 16th February, 2016 .

Synopsis:

It’s now 25 years since Fresh 4′s Wishing On A Star changed the Bristol music landscape and influenced a generation of artists. One of the first widely heard examples of the pioneering new sound from the UK’s West Country came with a 1989 sonic-attack on the UK’s Top Ten from South Bristol in the shape of established collective Fresh 4; DJ Krust, Flynn, Suv and Judge. Co-produced by fellow Bristol pioneers Smith and Mighty, Wishing On A Star was the first exposure many people outside of Bristol got to see of the unique fusion of heavy bass lines, Hip Hop beats, soulful vocals and new takes on classic songs.

In The following decade Suv, Krust and Flynn would all go on to find greater success as pioneers and mainstays of Bristol’s hugely successful Drum and Bass scene, writing new chapters that overshadowed their earlier success.

Due to unforeseen complications the evenings initial host, the legendary Gilles Peterson unfortunately could not attend, Universal Magnetic’s Benjamin One and Adam H. Murray were on hand to support, introduce and host the evening.

It was a great honour and pleasure for UM to be involved (Something Adam seems to say a lot in the opening of the video of the evening linked below!). But to be able to panel a discussion with a group of artists that have influenced and inspired Universal Magnetic so profoundly was a great experience! We were hyped!

On the evening we were also joined on the panel by Lizz E who provided the vocals for Wishing On A Star. There was also a sneak preview of short film No Way Out, by local filmmaker and designer Gary Thompson from 121 creatives. After the panel discussion there were DJ sets in the Watershed Cafe/Bar from Krust and Suv who both spun some heavy selections into the night!
