I want to take a second to just reflect on Malcolm X and the two most important women in the story of his life. It always hurts me how they are a background to his story. Louise Norton-Little was an immigrant from Granada and bore 7 children. When her husband/Malcolm’s dad, Earl was tied to train tracks and murdered by a white mob for preaching black unity in his Baptist sermons, she was left with nothing, no income, no food, no support network, nothing. About 6 years later, living in circumstances of abject poverty and isolation, her children were removed and separated into foster homes (those that were minors) which included 13-year-old Malcolm. She was found “psychologically unstable” and placed in a state mental institution. (Likely in a punitive manor). It’s as if Louise disappeared from the fundamental pop culture story that is told of “the” MalcolmX. Fast fw to Betty, we know Betty suffered loneliness, that she was frustrated sexually due to Malcolm’s absenteeism giving global lectures and sermons…preaching black unity…and that she was consistently left alone to raise and rear the six girls they created together, the twins whom were inutero at the time of Malcolm’s assassination and never met their father. Betty raised the six girls a single mother…and, in my opinion was constantly polarized as “holding it down” as if this was her ultimate duty to her husband. She met her untimely death to complications of the flames of her grandson (accidental or not is the constant debate) and still we somehow forget the pattern here. What does #ByAnyMeansNecessary look like in your life? We like to glamorize that fraise, but these women were trying to raise their babies after their partners were assassinated #ByAnyMeansNecessary The murders by rabid racist traditions in America that none of us who grew up in New York in this generation can fathom.
