“god, i truly hope that i’m not that woman, even if i somehow have a complete change of heart regarding kids,” she shook her head. “i can go into mama bear mode but i also know when the person i’m protecting is being an idiot. i’ll try to not judge her parenting again though, if i ever see her again.”

“how dare you, i was a perfect angel all through my childhood,” she laughed as she spoke, not even being able to believe it for herself. it was half true, anyway. “demon parents raise demon kids, it’s a fact of life. if you had seen the way she chewed out the poor cashier you would have wanted to call her out, too. it was kind of a train wreck, honestly,” she sighed, shaking her head. “remind me to never have kids.”

aarin cringed, “it’s difficult to raise kids,” he was trying to defend the woman’s parenting, but it was becoming increasingly difficult, “so, yeah, maybe some people shouldn’t have them because they don’t have the patience but i guess, technically, we shouldn’t judge. for all you know, in the future, you could be that woman. i’m hoping not but- you never know. if you have kids. which, i’ll do my best remind you not too.”

“someone here can definitely help. won’t be me though, i don’t like going near things that sound like they might explode.” she gave him a smile, “leave it here, i’ll put your name at the top of the list and mark it as important – couldn’t have you exploding, now could i?” she playfully teased, her smile morphing into a smirk. “i’m ‘bout to close up, i’ll give you a lift home.” 

“that makes two of us,” he agreed, “i don’t flirt with death like that.” stepping forward towards the counter, he peered over her head, towards the list of names, where she was marking his. there was a tiny flash of guilt- maybe someone else’s car was in more serious danger of exploding?- but he decided not to argue, because in reality, he had been putting off bringing the noise to the attention of an expert, mainly because he didn’t want to come in here and embarrass himself. his face flushed a light shade of red, “thanks,” he said meekly, “if you don’t want to go out of your way i’m perfectly okay with walking. it’s not that far,” he jerked his thumb over his shoulder, “and i mean, you are practically saving my life already. with the exploding car- and whatnot.”

— the coffee shop had slowly but surely begun winding down for the day, only a few customers milled about chatting or typing on their laptops in the corners of the store. alexia had to keep herself from looking at the clock every couple minutes, there was only about an hour left in her shift and she was getting ansy to leave. leaning forwards placing her elbows on the front counter she left out a small sigh. her eyes closed for a moment as she took a deep breath willing herself not to fall asleep then and there. when she opened her eyes back up she caught a glimpse of a very familiar head of brown hair. her stomach lurched at the idea of seeing aarin, so far she’d had managed to do a good job avoiding the boy around town even if it did mean ducking into random store when she saw him on the street. part of her knew it was childish to avoid him over a high school relationship but still the thought of their past made her feel bitter, regretful and a bit embarrassed. for a second she debated making a run for the bathroom or even hiding underneath the counter to avoid him, but it was already too late as he came in the door, “uh, hi, what can i get you?” she said in a uncharacteristically soft voice tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. 

really, who did he think he was? it was 10pm and aarin was stopping into a coffee shop around the corner from where he worked, knowing that he was going to be there at least another hour, mulling over film projects. that required coffee, even though the caffeine would keep him up until weird hours of the morning and he had to be awake at 8 the next day. his life never quite stopped. as if to punctuate that point, he didn’t see the barista until he’d come face-to-face with alexia, and he was so wildly caught off guard that he didn’t even respond to her right away. for a full minute, aarin didn’t say anything. he just stared, dumbfounded, until his brain screamed at him to make his order. “uh, can i get- coffee?” the question sounded stupid, the way it came out of his mouth in broken and confused syllables, with no detail. it wasn’t that he held any grudges towards alexia- it would be stupid for him to still be mad for a little over 2 years- but that didn’t stop unpleasant feelings to bubble up inside with him. he was, admittedly, still a little hurt about the way things had ended. and it wasn’t like he ran into her often, in fact, he had a hard time pin-pointing the last time he’d seen her due to random chance. “i mean,” after another lengthy period of silence, he finally seemed to recollect himself, “duh, coffee. that’s not specific. dark roast, two cream, one sugar.”

aarin ducked, trying to dodge the small, butter-y missile that had been launched at his head. “kaela, sweetie, i went through four years of film, i think i know what i’m talking about,” he argued, pressing long fingers against his chest. “and if you wanted doughnuts, maybe you shouldn’t have spent the past five minutes battling me on inception and let me go get them from the fridge. now i’m so disappointed in you that i don’t think i can move from this spot.”

     with an enormous bag of cheetos beside him on the couch and socked feet propped up on the coffee table in front of him, josh was the very picture of contented relaxation–other than maybe violet, this was a sight only aarin was ever privy to. he’d opened up his laptop with the intention of working on his game only to have gotten sucked into reddit almost an hour ago, and it was aarin walking in the front door that finally recaptured his attention. “i’ve accomplished nothing today,” he said, closing the laptop definitively and leaning forward to grab the rest of a half-smoked joint from earlier. “are you home the rest of the night? we should order a pizza or something. all i ate today was a family-size thing of cheetos, i need real food.” ( @aariins )

aarin hadn’t even taken his shoes off before he threw himself at the couch, revelling in finally being able to sit with a long, satisfied groan. he’d been on his feet since 7 am that morning, chasing errands in circles around the entirety of hermosas. his bag slumped to the ground beside him, and aarin dragged his long legs up onto the coffee table, right beside where josh’s had been. “i’m always okay with pizza.” he declared, ungracefully leaning over his roommate so he could stuff his hand into the bag of cheetos that the other hadn’t offered to share, “but i feel like i should warn you that this is our third day ordering take-out instead of actually cooking for ourselves, and if you cut me open i may just bleed the grease you find at the bottom of a pizza box,” stuffing the puff into his mouth, aarin ran his hand across his jeans, leaving a smear of orange dust across the already-stained denim.

   violet was enjoying her lunch when the bell to the shop door rang. her head popped up from behind the counter quickly, wiping any remaining food from around her mouth off. she quickly made it look like she was doing something worthwhile. “teller-morrow automotive shop,” she began, her brown eyes finally looking at the patron, she relaxed when she saw who it was. “oh, it’s just you.” she smiled. “what brings you in?”

“my car is making a funny noise,” it was the first thing aarin blurted out when he was greeted by the familiar girl behind the counter. unsurprisingly, it did not come out the way he had hoped, and he back-pedalled. “i mean, more specifically, it’s clicking at me. kind of like a bomb? i’m a little worried it’s gonna explode but it’s lasted a week since it started so....” flustered, he stumbled over his words. punctuating his sentence with a vague shrug, he grimaced, “so... hopefully someone can help. so i don’t explode.”
