What a year. Highs (and some lows). My alma mater awarded me for my work. I saw Black Panther in theaters four times. I visited prisons and it changed me. I saw lots of family. Kinda seems like a one sided conversation, doesn’t it? I’m tired of “conversations on race” whenever another innocent, unarmed black person is executed by the police. They’re as perfunctory as they are repetitive.

We need justice, not another hollow conversation that doesn’t change anything and does nothing to prevent the next shooting.

After the week I’ve had... Family. It’s been 20 years since the Murrays celebrated my late grandparents’ anniversary in Monterey. George and Lottie Belle relocated from Mississippi, raised 14 kids in Oakland and were married for 60 years. They’ve been blessed with scores of grandkids and great-grands. For years, we’d meet at this very hotel, celebrate their commitment to each other, eat brunch and walk down to the wharf. I can’t express how much I needed to hug, joke and laugh with my aunts, uncles and cousins, this weekend. What a way to end #BlackHistoryMonth! Last week, I moderated a panel discussion at Mic about the #BlackMonumentsProject. Panelists: @peacegina @mspackyetti @hankwillisthomas & @leerw. Most of the editorial and product team behind #BlackMonuments posed for a group photo with a 3D-printed @kaepernick7 statue. Lastly, Michelle Duster, the great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, came to Mic to announce an effort to build a monument to her ancestor in Chicago. (at Mic)
