I’m not much of a sappy person when it comes to my relationship. But after 7 years of being with my significant other, I made this for him. It’s been such a privilege to watch each other grow from teenagers to adults. After waking up next to each other every day I tend to take that for granted. When I saw this quote, I couldn’t help but think of him. I could go on about how we both bring out the best in each other and all that good stuff. When it comes down to it, it’s a great feeling to think about all the adventures we’ve been on and the adventures we plan to go on.
I wasn’t sure what i wanted my subject matter for my project to be (deep, funny, etc). And i didn’t want my exercise to take away from my final product so I chose Shel Silverstein as neutral and sometimes nostalgic poetry.
Project 5 Reading:
While reading Kiki Smith’s interview article about Jenny Holzer, I was very intrigued when Holzer spoke about her pieces involving the government documents, especially when she said, “At times I throw in color, as a form of hope.” I think we just get so used to having color in our lives that we never see/think about color being in a piece for more than just being color or establishing mood, but instead a symbol of hope. I also found it interesting how a person’s work can be focused on text, and yet the artist who makes it feels like they don’t know how to write unless they’re pretending to be someone else. But, that does make it interesting since most of her artwork can be considered a collaboration. I thought it was touching how she used parts of text from memorials where she said a man from Munich came to New York and presumably passed away in NY, but she brought his story back to a café in Munich. It made me think about how honored this person would feel to know that their words are on plates and coffee cups in a café in a place they used to call home.
In Ashley W. Simpson’s interview article about Robert Montgomery, I appreciated how he spoke about making money from his LED signs. I usually hear about artists wanting to make a living and wanting to spread their artwork through sales, but he instead focuses on how he wants to use that income to make larger scale pieces on billboards. Maybe it’s because he makes enough money, or maybe this is just a reflection of his dedication to his art. I also appreciated his view on hypocrisy involving religion and politics. His ability to criticize other people who claim to be Christian like he is but don’t have the actions of a Christian, shows that he isn’t afraid to speak his opinions through his artwork but also verbally. There were only a few pieces included in the article, but the ones that were chosen include text that does what it’s supposed to do – make you think.
I found both artists had interesting concepts, with one artist writing their own text and the other collaborating with other poets. I hadn’t thought about the process that goes into making these pieces, but it brings a new appreciation to the thought process because out of each successful piece of text I’m sure there’s a handful of not so successful rough drafts.
Project 4:
I struggled coming up with an idea for performance art that would be something interesting. I though about my daily routines and all the steps I take, so I decided to choose my path most travelled. 4 out my 5 classes are in Plaza, and besides work I spend most of my time either thinking about my education or being physically present in class. I chose to act out my daily steps where I always wonder how I look walking up and down the stairs because they are so awkwardly spaced. They’re too long to do an average step, but too short to fit in two steps. So enjoy my representation of my awkward daily trots up and down the Plaza stairs.
Performance Art Reading
I found it interesting how art historians are unsure of which category to place performance art. I hadn't thought of the theater, dance, and other forms of art that go into performance (seeing it as a “collage of media”) - but then again i’ve never really had to sit down and think about how to define performance art. It’s so easy for us to just accept different forms of art in the art world, but this article did a good job with talking about the controversy and lack of acceptance for performance art in what they considered to be the “beginning”.
Project 3:
My boyfriend had to create a song for one of his classes as a music business major, and he didn’t know what to write about. I jokingly challenged him to write it about my brother’s cat who is scared of everyone but my brother (they are all roommates), and so he did! We found out last year that 3-year-old Mr. Winks has heart disease and is on borrowed time, this is our way of appreciating him from afar (or just across the room). So to continue the joke, we figured that Lemmi Winks deserved a music video. So here you go Lemmi, you may tolerate me picking you up and loving you, but at least you get a music video out of it.

Reading #3:
From the textbook, I found it important to remember time and motion beyond just implied motion in 2D art or recorded motion in 4D art, but to also take into consideration when viewers are walking through installations, Robert Irwin’s garden, for example – how motion is used in those settings. Usually In art classes we focus on how time and motion is incorporated in 2D, 3D, or 4D art, but rarely in the form of how we should guide viewers through pathways, creating directional force in the “real-world”, etc. Or how time is incorporated in art, the length of a video, the distance of an installation, or the use of implied time in 2D or 3D art.
In Sean Cubitt’s, “Projection: Vanishing and Becoming” article, he brings up Bazin’s argument of how art can be seen as the attempt to cheat or outlive death. I had never thought about that, but once I did it I found myself recognizing historical art and how even though important figures may have passed on, their legacy is still present. Rather it be a good or bad legacy, their story carries on beyond their time. I also found it interesting how he focused on outline or projection. From charcoal on hand that is transferred to wall, projection of light onto figures to then draw an outline, and then to actual modern technology that projects. To think about projection physically, mythically, archaeologically, and even psychologically, he takes a philosophical approach that makes the reader think about more than just the physical components of what projection is.
Moment Captured Series:
My Inspiration for this project was the contrast between natural life (like animals, those unaware of technology), and the overwhelming world of tech we live in today. I wanted to play with blurring and saturation of colors to emphasize the focal point of the gif which, to me, is the moment we best see the animal, and understand what they are experiencing. Though animals are cliche to post about, I do not care. I love animals and could watch these gifs all day. I loved being able to single out both majestic and awkward moments that these animals experience (just as we all do). I had a hard time deciding what to do and/or incorporate to make these more unique but decided the best way of displaying animals is through their own actions.

The titles are too funny and really play off the photoset.

I enjoy that your photoset has your own commentary which makes it even more funny.

One of the few, if not the only GIF, that has a smooth circular transition.
