4d final For this project we had to do words on the street. I wanted to add a personal aspect to this project so I used a poem that I came up with when I was a kid that has followed me. I broke it down into 4 phrases to take the pictures. Since the final phrase had to particularly deal with love, I found a couple that was willing to take the picture.
Exercise 5
For the fourth project, the Artist is Present, I decided to put together a few videos of some seemingly mundane actions that can have some very real meaning to a person or others. The Countdown. I took a standard hand countdown and modified it a little to have the 1 represented as the middle finger. I did this partially as a tribute to my Dad who would flip us off and say "you're number one in my book". The other reason was to add a little humor. I also did all the numbers, 0-5, with a different background behind each. I believe this added a bit of dynamism to the usual tv countdown sounds that I placed in the background. Also, all of the countdown videos start with a view of a scar on the back of my right hand, which I see as a reminder. The grip strengthener. I decided to use this in a video because it is something that I use as physical therapy and is important in my life. I decided to background noise this with a squeaky toy sound because of my cat. The coin flip. I have a $1 poker chip that I use when gaming. I decided to use this in a coin flip to which I added a background of R2D2 sounds to pay tribute to my gaming. The dice. I have been gaming since I was 14, and it has always played a major role in keeping my sanity, especially on deployment. I put a background of Donald Duck having an orgasm because the first time I heard it, I was on deployment gaming with a friend and died laughing. The runes. In my spiritual practices, I use these a lot. I chose a background of coins falling to have a little fun. The cat and the chocolate. Whenever I eat chocolates or any candy that has a paper to make a crumpling sound, my cat comes running so that I will throw it so that he can play fetch. Luckily while I was working on this project he decided to play and I caught it on film. I placed the scene from "Dr Doolittle" where the dog says to throw the ball, because he reminds me of this sometimes. The tie. I learned how to tie a full windsor knot from my grandfather who always said that it was important to look the part of what you want. I placed the Navy's general quarters warning claxon in the background to pay homage to my military days.

Marina was a pioneer for performing arts. Even though performance arts were still very new as a recognized art form when she started out, she also took things to extremes which had not been broached at that time, especially from a females perspective. She achieved a real sense of shock and awe with some of her more taboo works as well. She is very innovative and a real inspiration in performance art. Roselee Goldberg brings up a good point with there being an artist-audience relationship, as the performer really has to engage the audience to obtain their reaction. Another very good point is about a performance artist "challenging the perceptions" of the audience. This is very true when for a long time art has been traditionally defined as a painting on a wall or a statue in the room, but performance has been around for so much longer just not recognized as an art form. The only downfall to performance art is that, generally, when the artist is done then so is the art...unlike paints, oils and other more recognized art forms, the artist has to be there for the art to actually happen.

Artist Statement 3 (Video Art)
First off, this project was a collaboration between Daniel Huerta, Alexa Underwood, and myself. I took care of most of the pre-production work, including writing the script, putting together a shot list, and coordinating a time for the cast and crew to meet up. I also helped direct the actors, gather the shots, and edit the final video together. Daniel, in addition to playing one of the main characters in the sketch, assisted in unpacking and breaking down the equipment and setting up the shots. Alexa was our script supervisor and helped out with special effects makeup. It was definitely a team effort altogether. Similar to my two previous art projects, this video is mainly meant to be a comedic and irreverent piece that combines a classic SNL skit with a bizarre candy commercial. Most of all, this video truly is an homage to the original Saturday Night Live digital short, titled “Dear Sister AKA The Shooting”. My goal was to recreate the sketch to the best of my ability as well as put a slight twist on it. I hope that audiences enjoy this video as much as the original.

For this project I decided to use the Hulk. He has always been one of my favorite comic book characters. I was always intrigued by a mild mannered scientist becoming this mountain of muscle to help people, and it was all a fluke accident. I waited with anticipation when the first movie was due to come out only to be let down by it. I have subsequently been let down by other stand alone movies for the Hulk. While Marvel does a good job of utilizing and portraying his character in the support roles while during his stint with the Avengers, I still await a decent stand alone for him. I utilized several decent fight scenes from different movies, and overlayed it to songs that I like and portray what the Hulk is.

I found it interesting in the "Vanishing and Becoming" article, how they were able to keep a plant alive using only computer screens. Using only the artificial lights of the computer screens without ANY natural light, I would think that the plant would die, but if not, then something would not be quite right with it. I also found interesting the take that the earliest cave drawings weren't drawings, but they were projections of light. While I don't personally understand this concept, it bears some looking into. The concept of time elapsing and catching that in art was difficult until the invent of cameras and then video. Once those came along, catching time and manipulating it started becoming common place, and has now become it's own art form.
that was fun! have a good weekend. see u tuesday. next up is video art. time for sound…
