jasper peered down at the empty glass in his hand, the only remnants of the whiskey once there were the sticky droplets which clung to the bottom. he only barely remembered that alcohol was forbidden, having long ago committed to the sin. it was a development he would credit to the collapse of his engagement, but in reality, was a mere case of his decision. now, however, the bar was too crowded, and he was beginning to feel suffocated. he didn’t like people, could only stand to be around them for so long. thus, when they started pouring in, he took it as a cue to leave. in a minute, anyway. it was a delay he’d come to regret when an overly flirtatious bartender seated the wicked witch by his side. adriana. he’d done his best to avoid her, but misfortune followed him like a cloud, and she was the whole damn storm. he should walk away. ignore her. be indifferent… except he couldn’t. “move to the other side of the bar,” he didn’t spare a glance at her as he spoke. “i don’t need you near me.”

as if running into jaden wasn’t gut wrenching enough, adri was two for two with jasper. whom, she hardly recognized until the cold draft of his greeting stroked her back like some long lost pet he was galled to see again. “oh get over yourself,” she purred, rolling her eyes with the same flippant attitude she’d displayed towards her ex earlier. if jasper wanted to hate her and blame her, then fine. but, it was his problem, not hers. “i happen to like it here.” she particularly liked the bartender who has yet to retract his eyes from her chest and focus them on the bar, to which he should be tending. nothing like some fresh, male validation to lift her spirits. “why don’t YOU move?” her eyes snapped an accusatory glance his way. “what, you don’t want me within close reach because you’re afraid you won’t be able to keep your hands to yourself?” they’ve been there, done that. the truth of the matter is, adri would do it all over again. jasper was extraordinary with his mouth. “it’s me,” she reminds him. “no need to pretend you’re this upset your boring relationship ended.  i can assure you, i’m not buying it. and frankly, i don’t care.”

ZAHRA YILMAZ

her jaw practically landed on the table when Adri named someone she had seen following Cameron around. a sickening feeling grew in her stomach; jealousy, though she was quick to smother it once she realized. it was meant to be casual, and fun. “i didn’t expect her to be his type.” the opposite of what zahra was but maybe she was the exception. a nurse who was around and a convenience for him. “i haven’t fixated on it but i’ve seen it. it’s kind of hard to avoid.” leaning back into her chair, she found interest in her food. “can you keep a secret? it’s a big one.”

given, she’d just spilled the beans to zahra - it would appear, arguably, she can’t keep a secret. alas, it was different when your best friend was confiding in you over a literal stranger. “how big? are we talkin’ life ruining big? because if so, yes. now spill it!” if adri had to grab her co worker by the arms and shake the secret out of her, she will.

she smelt better than he could ever remember. but her presence still intoxicated him beyond belief, making him forget how to even talk at times. this was the woman he compared everyone to, and by default, every single one of them failed to match up. even at the tender age of fifteen, with less than a hundred dollars to his name, he was ready to give up every single opportunity to raise his child with her. but things hadn’t worked out and that knowledge still haunted him to this day, having wished on several occasions that things may have gone differently. perhaps then he wouldn’t have to wake up to an empty bed, albeit the string of women that rolled out of it alongside him. all to be forgotten. 

his mouth hung open, but not due to her beauty, rather the visible confusion. though he knew that she couldn’t be confused about who he was. “adri…” he trailed off silently before nodding his head. it killed him. not only had it bruised his ego but he felt his heart shatter that the years of silence had outweighed their memories. she’d forever been engraved in his being and he assumed…. well, fuck her then. 

“i must have mistaken you for the last girl i fucked. she had a nicer ass, though.” he hated himself but he couldn’t allow himself to be vulnerable. peering down at his hand, he looked back at her. “i’m going to go find a real medical professional to fix my hand.” his jaw was fixed and any hurt that was visible was swept away by an hardened shell. “do you mind telling the nurse that’s coming over here that I’m ready for her. I’ve been waiting to give her my number.” despite not being sure that it would, he hoped that it would kill her as much as it did him to play this game.

his ego was bruised and rightfully, so. hers would’ve been too, had he acted as though she didn’t exist. unfortunately, it was too late to consider that outcome, or how differently this conversation could’ve panned out had she approached it more maturely. now, it was her turn to feel the colossal ache burrow deep inside her chest and twist so hard, it felt like she couldn’t breathe when he’d written her off. like, someone had come along and taken a sledgehammer to her chest, knocking every ounce of wind right out of her. 

“how many adri’s do you know?” she questioned, feeling the jealousy stir as images of him with other women flashed before her eyes, making them smolder and glisten with visceral tears. part of her wanted to reach out and touch him, claw his entire being to shreds just so that no other woman could ever lay a finger on his gorgeous skin. even though a decade apart stood between them, adri had always claimed him as hers. how dare he choose to forget that, even though she’d pretended to first. 

peering down at his hand, adri noticed the amateur work he must’ve attempted to gauze it. the hospital was full, a bustle of critical patients all rolling in at once on squeaky stretchers. it would be hours before a doctor or nurse could see him. so although, she wasn’t thrilled about it, adri slid the chart in front of her back to the receptionist and tucked her pen into her scrub pocket. “i’ll handle this one. can you page dr. harding and let him know his patient’s bloodwork has been filed and she’s ready for him now?” after the receptionist nods, adri gestures for jaden to follow her into one of the exam rooms so she could take a look at the damage. “first of all, you’re not her type. so, you can give her your number but you’ll be waiting by the phone for hours. she swings for the other team. and secondly, you’re stuck with me. the adri with a less nicer ass.” accompanying her sarcasm was a roll of her eyes. “so let’s start with, what happened to your hand?”

Jaden hadn’t anticipated getting a little too caught up when he met with his informant only for more of his friends to join them. Friends who hadn’t known that the man Jaden was having a drink with worked with the police. In order to keep them both safe, Jaden molded into the role of dealer and found himself on top of his informant with his fist driving into his face. He’d have a lot of making up to do but it was essential to save both of their cover. 

It also meant he’d spend the latter part of his day at the hospital getting stitches after his informant’s tooth had cut his knuckle open. All of which he forgot when he caught sight of the only person who could unravel his entire being. The nurse came but he brushed her off, walking after his first love and high school girlfriend. “Adri.” he called out, smiling at her. “I didn’t know… wow, I mean, you look great. How are you?”

for the better part of, oh.... twelve years, adri’s succeeded in dodging the ghosts of her pasts quite magnificently. jaden especially, given with him, there was always way more history to be had than she cared to admit. for starters, he impregnated her at the ripe age of fifteen and instead of coming clean to him about terminating the pregnancy, she lied and told everyone she had a miscarriage, then jetted off to california with her tail tucked between her legs to “recoup”. after that, she convinced her mother to ship her off to boarding school for the rest of the year. she figured the distance would give them both enough time to move on with their lives and pretend the whole shitshow never happened.

come to find, it’s true what they say, that absence only makes the heart grow fonder. so in the end, adri vowed never to feel anything for another man, EVER again. she ran at the first sign of commitment and never looked back. it’s done well for her these last few years. any drama she succumbed to, was that of other’s. or... well, until recently, when adri did the unspeakable thing of sleeping with her sister’s fiance. but that’s neither here nor there, at the moment.

the second he approached her, adri could feel the color visibly drain from her face. her heart, which she vowed to protect at all costs, swelled with rememberance, and a longing she hasn’t felt since she was a teen. since, she kissed his lips or he ran those magical fingers down the length of her spine. snap out of it, she warns herself, shoulders stiffening as she closes the manila folder with her patient’s records rather hastily. a visible sign that she was uncomfortable and ready to bolt. “i’m sorry?” she turns to him, and immediately feels her breath get caught in her throat. lord have mercy. he’s twice as hot as she recalls. “do i know you?” there. nothing puts a nail in the coffin of their past quite like forgetting he exists. even if it pains her not to entertain him for memory’s sake.

Zahra could feel her heart in her throat, tightening her hold on the files in her hand while she looked over at Adri. For one, she wasn’t keen on finding out if he was sleeping with someone else, and secondly, she hated the idea of Adri finding out her dirty little secret. She was eventually going to tell her but she hadn’t gotten around to it because she had promised herself the last time would be…. the last. Despite how every time was meant to be the last, she meant it this time. “who?”

if she didn’t know any better, adri would’ve assumed zahra looked like she’d swallowed a lemon. her angelic features inevitably paled at the mention of dr. harding’s sex life. luckily for zah though, she wasn’t adri’s suspect number one. “molly in hr. someone said they heard her and dr. harding going at it in one of the on call rooms last friday. and they were seen together later that night going into the chief’s office. she’s not even that cute. and have you seen that camel toe?” if she’s being totally honest with herself, adri is only bitter because she wishes she was having a scandalous love affair in one of the on call rooms.

for as long as she can remember, adriana’s lived a rather affluent lifestyle. in her prime, her mother was a brazilian supermodel while her father owned a luxury sports car dealership. when they moved to chicago back in 1998, adriana was just a baby. while her older sister was two going on three.

since then, her father’s business has turned into a front for money laundering unbeknownst to adriana and her older sister.

they’ve been handed everything they could ever want on a silver platter which has led both girls to become extremely spoiled and accustomed to their lavish lifestyles.

when adriana was 15, she got pregnant with her then boyfriend. knowing how her father would react, adriana confided in only her mother and what her father thought was a month-long school trip was actually a trip to san fran where she got an ab*rtion and therapy treatment for said-ab*rtion prior to returning home.

it was that reckless mistake and the loss of her child that eventually spurred adriana to go into med school. she wanted to find a way to appease her guilt and help others by atoning for her sins. thus, she worked her way up to becoming a physician assistant, much to her father’s dismay. if he had things his way, his daughters would never work and rely solely on him or their future spouses.

adriana’s always had a bit of a wild streak. unlike her sister, she has a habit of rebelling against her father’s wishes and actively does things to prove to herself, she is her own individual apart from her family’s corrupted ties.

as a result, a few months ago, adriana slept with her sister’s fiance just days before the two were scheduled to walk down the aisle. when her sister found out, all hell broke loose and the girls were forced to separate. since then, adriana has yet to apologize and stubbornly refuses to admit she’s done anything wrong despite knowing in her heart of hearts that it was a mean and vicious thing to do to someone who has only ever loved and cherished her.

there’s many things in her life, adriana regrets. yet she has a hard time admitting when she’s wrong. it’s probably her worst toxic trait, that still exists to this day.
