the blonde rummaged through her bag searching for another dollar. ‘ ha… i swear… i swear i had one somewhere in here. gimme a second. ’, she sighed before setting her bag on top of the counter to get a better look. after another minute she officially gave up. her eyes scanned the room. her eyes lit up when she noticed a familiar face who had just ordered. ‘ i’m so sorry, give me a second. ’, she told the barista before tapping the person on the shoulder. ‘ hey, hi. ’, she sang with a sweet smile. ‘ do you think i can borrow a dollar… i’ll pay you back, i just need a milkshake today. ’, she explained.

abby was glad for her day off, but she’d been running late this morning and hadn’t had time to make coffee, so she’d been running on empty since six. she slipped into the coffee shop and placed her usual springtime order, stepping out of the way and scrolling through her phone. she looked up when she felt the tap on her shoulder and grinned. “morning, callie!” she said brightly, then tipped her head. “oh - yeah, one sec!” she said, digging into her purse for her wallet. she pulled it out and handed callie a dollar, shaking her head. “don’t worry about paying me back, it’s a dollar.”

“if that were the case, you’re going to have to shoot me in the head,” leo replied grimly, “imagine being friends a zombie. how shit would that be?” thankfully, the zombie talk had distracted him from another flash of pain, and before he knew it, he was all patched up. “ah, thank you!” leo beamed, standing up and looping an arm around the blonde. “you’re, like, my personal nurse. do i deserve a cookie?”  

abby grimaced at the mention of zombies, wrinkling her nose. “i’ll leave that to someone else.” she said. “but the guy from sean of the dead was friends with his buddy after he turned into a zombie, right?” she grinned when he stood up, looping her arm around his waist and humming. “i suppose so. c’mon, i heard there are some really good ones at the carnival.”

leo pursed his lips, his grip on the bench tightening as he fought through the pain — well, maybe he was overreacting. it didn’t hurt that much. “i’ve tripped a bunch of times and left my injuries to rot,” he whined out, his unscathed leg swinging back and forth, “why can’t you just slap a bandaid and get it over with?” at the mention of a cookie, however, leo’s eyes widened, “a cookie? really?”

“it’s a miracle none of your limbs have fallen off.” abby said, her tone still teasing. she dabbed at the scrape again before digging a tube of neosporin out of her purse and putting a dollop onto the bandaid. she smoothed it over leo’s knee and sat back, nodding, pleased with her work. standing up, she offered a hand. “come on. i promised a cookie.”

“hey, what do you call a snake that’s 3.14 meters long?” leo asked, voice bright and cheery, despite his bleeding knee — he may or may not have gotten in a competitive round of tag with a bunch of kids and tripped. “a pi-thon!” he couldn’t help but laugh at his joke, before cutting himself off with a flinch when he felt a stinging pain on his knee. “ow ow ow, this shit hurts, what the fuck!”

abby’s brows lifted at leo’s joke and she rolled her eyes fondly, chuckling quietly. “that was horrible.” she teased, ripping open a tiny alcohol wipe. she dabbed at his knee carefully, leaning back when he flinched and looking up at him. “i told you it was going to!” she said, her patented Mom Friend Voice coming out, “you gotta let me clean it, leo, or it’s gonna get infected. i’m almost done. if you hold still, i’ll give you a cookie after.”

the windows are open, the heater’s lower than it has been in months, and abby couldn’t be happier. granted, it’s not summer, so it’s still a little chilly, but all the same. 65 degrees after it’s been in the thirties for weeks has abby feeling bright as the sunshine in may. a knock at the door pulls her out of her thoughts and she opens it, mid-dance. “hi! come dance with me!” she crows, making grabby hands at the other.

as much as charlotte loved winter – christmas, hot cocoa, huddling around a fire – she was also very fond of spring. there was something about rebirth that was beautiful to her. maybe it was because she was born in a field of flowers or the fact that every year, her parents would throw something celebrating the spring equinox. she had gotten a text from abby to come over, and she wasn’t exactly sure what it was about. but she happily obliged to dancing with the other as she was pulled into abby’s. “hey! someone’s in a good mood!”

abby beamed at the shorter blonde, spinning her around the living room and laughing lightly. “it’s so nice out! i had the day off and i spent most of it outside, planting stuff in my garden.” she said, sighing happily. “i thought you might wanna hang out and have dinner!” the song changed from something pop-y to something swing-y and abby changed her dancing accordingly.

     she nearly says no, it’s her knee jerk instinct to say no. but she’s got nothing better to do, so instead she nods her head, shrugging her shoulders. “thanks. it’s some recipe from one of my old roommates. they used to be the best. i make no promises about this batch though.” ramona follows abby into her kitchen, placing the tupperware of cookies down. “so, do you always just dance in your apartment by yourself? or is there an occasion?”

she beams when ramona comes in and waves a hand for her to make herself at home at the island in the kitchen. “i was just about to make some tea, would you like some?” she asks, pushing onto her toes to retrieve two mugs from an upper cabinet. shrugging as she turns around, she hums. “no occasion. i’m just in a good mood.”

     honestly, ramona would’ve just waited until she saw abby at work to return the cookie tray she had let her borrow. but it was such a hassle to carry around, and her apartment was messy enough as it is that she was almost afraid it’d get lost in the chaos. she can hear music playing through the door, and, when abby opens it, ramona feels like she needs to shield her eyes from how bright abby is. she shakes her head at the other’s invitation. “um, i just wanted to return this?” she holds up the cookie tray. “thanks. i also brought some cookies i made using it. they’re oatmeal chocolate chip.”

abby pouts lightly when ramona refuses the dance, but doesn’t push it. “oh, thank you!” she says, taking the tray. “d’you wanna come in?” she sniffs at the cookies, humming happily. “oh, these smell so good!” she steps aside to extend the offer of coming in, then moves to the kitchen to put the cookie tray down.
