For this project i wanted to explore the pupil and how it reacts to light. Not only should you see the eyes in the video dilate, but your eyes should as well with the transitions used and strobe lights. It was fun to try new things with Video and I definitely see myself returning to this medium soon! I love and look forward to checking out the class’s work and engaging!
MUSIC VIDEO
This is one of my favorite videos of all time mixed with one of my favorite songs of all time. Its a heart wrenching love story accompanied by Jeff Buckley’s amazing rendition of Hallelujah. I mashed these two but unfortunately the video was still to long. I managed to trim the video in two and will post them both simultaneously. I encourage all to watch all the video or check it out on youtube. Video, Me & You a love story. Hope you all enjoy!!
Music Video: I’m a Believer
I knew quite early on that I wanted my music video not to be too serious and attempt to make it humorous instead. I’ve had a few ideas floating around in my head for a while already and using a song from Shrek definitely stuck once I thought of it, and current events are always easy to work from. With Kanye and Trump’s current, public love affair still running around the media, this felt perfect. I’ve used Premiere briefly before and am glad I started off knowing the basics, but cutting and sequencing all the clips still took plenty of time and could have gone better.
Exercise #2
I always loved reading comics as a kid and one of my favorites was the Civil War storyline from Marvel Comics. Seeing it depicted in the movie was something real special and makes for one of the best fight scenes in comic movie history. Heres my gif!
Series
For my Series project, I chose to display imagery that was, of course, culturally relevant, while also examining the nature of conflict, controversy, and technology, using the 1940′s as a starting point. The notion that evolution, progress, and enhanced knowledge has, in many ways, been a catalyst for our own demise was something that I wanted to highlight, and since the subject matter was focused on our country’s downward spiral, I thought I would use large, dynamic numbers to countdown from 10 all the way to 1, with a literal ‘bomb’ going off in the first image and a figurative one, set to explode, in the final one.
The countdown, in my mind, serves as the most influential component in terms of movement, motion, and implied time. The physical aesthetic, created by pulling images off larger works or photos and combining them with each other while applying blending modes, also contributes to this element. The colors, in most cases, are sharp with abrupt transitions and contrast; this is intended to prevent viewers from finding themselves too comfortable, which might produce unintended results, and keep people’s minds moving while they interact with images that they know very well in some cases and, at least in my case, some they wish they knew better.
Another primary component that is worth considering is that, in many of my classes, we are viewing conflict, dissension, and turmoil across social media feeds, televised news coverage, print media, etc. As many might agree, this is all being provided for our consumption with a sense of cinematic drama and an underlying ability to control our exposure to content tailored specifically for us: reality TV, steaming series that we can ‘binge-watch, etc.’ I suppose I made an effort to disrupt that with my project, by creating images that are, hopefully, quite accessible upon first impression, but end up requiring a bit of closer analysis and critical thought.
Reading & Response
If a picture says a thousands words, a gif is a freaking novel. I have always loved gifs and have made some in the past as well. I loved reading and researching about how the Gif has become a staple to online communication, which is undeniably true. The amount one can say with a 3 second loop is both very descriptive but so short and to the point. To better explain messages, here are 10 of my favorite Gifs.
1) This is a clip from a video where the kid was misidentified and was called a different name than his own. The kid just looks away but his nervousness speaks so loudly
2) This one was from a clip where a mom tells her two daughters they are off to Disney land. One daughter cries hysterically, the other, Chloe, doesn’t know what to think
3)whenever asked a stupid question, Obama gifs got your back
4) Classic Kanye goes from 100-0 real quick
5) Micheal from the Office for when bad news comes aroud
6) Classic Simple Loop or jump rope
7) Chihuahua Dance Moves
8) Classic Facepalm
9) this one is just bad asd
10) Great movie Great Gif
Artist Statement #1
The idea behind this comes from my personal tendancy to get lost in thought and fantasy in times rather than thinking about what I actually have. I think a lot of people can relate in finding it easy to forget what we have around us. I symbolized this by using settings of places I really want to see in my life but filling my position in them with neo-tokyo images which I find aesthetically pleasing but are things I don’t actually get to see.
LOVE the Neo-Tokyo design with the other locations..
PROJECT #1
My theme for this project was the idea of History repeating itself. How sometimes world events feel familiar because we have perhaps already been through something alike in the past. I merged two or more events in history, new and old, to depict a collage of how they are similar. The meanings or cultures might change but a lot of things are doomed to be repeated. Acknowledging the past and planning to do good is the only way we can create a better tomorrow.
Disappearing Acts - Exercise #1
With this exercise I wanted to explore the concept of art in the museum. It was interesting to see the shapes that different types of art made once removed (square of the canvas vs wavy forms of sculpture). It was also entertaining to see the audience staring at blank spaces of where art once was.
There’s an idea. The removal of art.
My theme for this exercise was the notorious Guitar Face. I love music and this phenomena is something often seen at live shows especially in guitar solos. I wanted to take a lighter tone with this assignment and deleted all the guitars to see what the photos would look like. As expected, still hilarious but not much changed from the overall photos. The silhouettes still remains and if I were to change anything, I might have added a different negative shape in place of the guitar. The meaning is still amazing artist like Price and John Mayer performing at legendary levels but leaves more to the imagination to fill in the space of the instrument.
My favorite Ai Wei Wei piece.
Ai Wei Wei. Never Sorry.
I had previously been familiar with Ai Wei Wei’s work through a prior course but had never delved into much information before. This documentary was a great source in understanding the artists work in greater depth. It is easy to want to be disturbed by an artist like Ai Wei Wei and how he disturbs the art community and history as a whole, but I believe individuals like him are necessary for the progression of art as well as people. He is an irrational man who defaces and breaks centuries old vases of his very own culture to make powerful statements. Statements questioning our values and how we need to look at the present instead of upholding the past. The present isn’t pretty for Wei Wei and he has the courage to point it out in a country where opinions can lead to harsh consequences. Being a communication design and marketing major, I love how he uses blogs and social media to reach a greater audience to raise awareness to injustice. He is a pioneer in expressing genuine emotions in his country and has captivated a active audience who engages with every one of his posts. Ai Wei Wei is without a doubt one of the most prolific artist of our time and I know that I personally have been impacted by his work to act/create more from my passion, emotion, and heart rather than from general norms, social ideals, or over thinking.
