How do I respond to people who say fashion is frivolous? For better or worse, we all get dressed in the morning. I don't know any naturists.

"[Morgan] Wandell puts a fine point on [Burning Man's] appeal: 'There's none of this nonsense like in the outside world where people say, "We're here and then we'll go there for a drink and that's going to be better." No. You're at the coolest, best party on the planet, and everything you're seeing and everything you're doing is amazing. Wherever you are, that's where you're supposed to be.'"

At the height of Fleetwood Mac’s excess, Nicks was legendary for insisting her hotel rooms be painted pink and outfitted with a white piano. 'One of Stevie’s almost comedic needs, Traveling Wilbury that she is,' says Fleetwood, 'is what we call hotel-hopping, where we all check into a hotel and she goes, "Oh, I need to try another one," and just checks out. She should be a hotel critic.' The singer Vanessa Carlton, a close friend, calls it 'gypsy culture': 'If you’re just not connecting to the space anymore, you just gotta move on down the road.'

"I did successfully withstand the urge to purchase a $250 jar of moisturizer that carried the intriguing claim that it was 'made entirely by hand in a monastery.' I also passed up the chance to buy various masks and creams laden with exotic ingredients such as 'pure diamond powder,' 'crushed Polynesian pearls,' 'wild yams,' 'sea wrack,' and 'powerful caviar extracts.'"

I think fashion embraces everything that is happening, everything in society and vice versa. Other creative fields find in fashion openness, comprehension, money—not necessarily money, but interest. People in fashion are open to music, open to movies, open to art, open to architecture. In the fashion world, there is a lot of enthusiasm.
