Desperate Times || Matthew + Abigail
Matthew knew he’d be in big trouble with his uncle if the man found out that he’d signed up for the supply run. He knew that Joel would eventually find out, but he hoped it would be after he came back with a lot of great stuff, so he’d be forgiven.
He just wanted to be useful. He wasn’t a little kid, he was fifteen. He didn’t need to go to school. It wasn’t like he was going to become a millionaire now anyway, so it didn’t matter what his mom had planned for him. Besides, she’d obviously not cared that much about him. And going to school wasn’t going to help anyone in town.
When he found out his partner was going to be Abigail McCoy, he’d almost regretted signing up. He knew Abigail. She was from Shady Grove, like him, but liked to pretend she was better than everyone else. He guessed now that she was a purger, she’d be moving up to Haven Hill though. The thought made him feel sick. She was the meanest person he’d ever met, and that was saying something in this town. It didn’t matter that she was hot as hell and even shorter than him (a rarity in girls these days); he was not looking forward to working with her.
He’d finally gotten around to making that spear, attaching a kitchen knife to a large stick. He brought it with him to the entrance of Pleasant Town, waiting there for Abigail. At his side was a backpack, empty aside from a few water bottles.
Abigail had never killed anyone before besides her parents. The image still haunted her mind every night. But there was nothing she could have done. They were already bitten. Even knowing what the purgers had done before, she still couldn't understand the meaning of the title. Of course she couldn't. Not until she actually had experienced her first purge and killed people who had no reason to be.
The job was not something she was looking forward to, but it seemed the only way to survive was to leave Shady and become part of the filthy Mayor's crew. Abigail didn't want to die, and she sure as hell didn't want to kill anyone, even if she didn't like many people. The girl was far from loyal and kind; maybe it was time to learn how to truly live up to her title.
She gulped as she walked toward Matthew, Joel's annoying nephew. The boy was someone Abigail never really cared for, especially with his cocky teenage mouth. She held her new shotgun to her chest as she swayed to an older looking orange ford pick-up truck. It always seemed to Abigail that she was taller than the kid, but as she looked him over, feeling weak and scared inside, she couldn't help but realize the size difference between them. "Get in, midget," she ordered, straight faced as she swung her door open and slammed it shut, almost immediately starting the car.
As she waited for him to get in, she sighed, trying to pull herself together. She was in charge now. Abigail was a purger now. She could kill now.
