Are there any GoT adaptional changes you like (or at least felt like they held some promise when they were introduced)? (E.g. I liked that the friendship between Sansa and Margaery seemed to be somewhat more genuine before the season reset and Sansa for some reason making a snide remark about having a new queen)
Well whatâs funny about that is while it did create a certain engagement, it was kind of counter to the point of the Tyrells in the books. Theyâre supposed to be fair-weather friends using Sansa as a pawn (their treatment of her as soon as a Willas wedding is off the table is kind of proof of that), so Sansaâs bitter thought âmy friendsâ at her wedding makes a ton more sense. Word on the season reset though. âWe have a new queenâ + the eyeroll just made her seem jealous and bitchy, and a bit daft for being jealous. Shockingly.
So I see that adaptational change asâŠidk, a wash maybe? Rooting for Marg could have been interesting and engaging I guess, even if itâs worldâs away from the book, but then she just became this petty person and child rapist in Season 5, who was more interested in making jabs at Cersei Poor Carol over breakfast than any form of actual governance. In Season 6, her role was incomprehensible. This is the issue! Any change that may have started with a modicum of potential just gets wasted.
I guess being generous, thereâs a few things I liked:
Viserys getting what could be described as a PoV scene and fleshing that out
Ned outright saying to Arya that of course Sansa couldnât have called the crowned prince a liar at Kingsroad-gate, closing down that space for Sansa-hate that permeates every damn discussion of AGOT
The Jon/Ned goodbye scene
In some ways the concept of Ros had potential to give more of a PoV to âsmallfolkâ (though we know how that ended up, and why wasnât she Chataya), and sometimes I think it could have been interesting
I didnât mind the streamlining of Theonâs time at Winterfell in Season 2, where they didnât bother giving us Ramsay posing as Reek and all that. Though then we did get torture porn for a yearâŠ
This is off the top of my head, but I could probably find a few more if I thought about it. The thing is, I donât mind changes for visual mediums, especially if thereâs a story that needs to be streamlined given episode constraints and whatnot. Sure, no Arianne Martell is personally sad for me, but sheâs one of those characters I never expected to see on the screen, you know? Not that I can pretend for a second that their method of âadaptingâ Dorne was in any way acceptable, by really any standard. Ironic enjoyment?
Iâm no purist by any stretch of the imagination, but it just seems like the second D&D deviate from the books or try and fix them, thatâs when the writing and show becomes utterly terrible. Itâs a bit uncanny. And especially at this point when I just have no suspension of disbelief, itâs hard to look at adaptational decisions and think âyeah, that one was worth it.âÂ
How do you feel about Arya being Tywinâs waterbearer at Harrenhall rather than Roose Boltonâs? I havenât gotten that far in the books yet but I often see that at the top of positive changes-lists.
