I want to be seen, greenâŠ
I teach a class called âDecolonize Your Diet,â and I talk about the Spaniards arriving in Mesoamerica. One of the first things they tried to changeâin addition to religionâ was the way people ate. They introduced wheat and tried to make eating bread something that was seen as more valuable than eating corn. They outlawed amaranth, and in South America they outlawed quinoa. I tell my students to think about how the dominant powers are invested in controlling what their subjects eat, and then to take that concept from the 1500s to our contemporary era and ask themselves, âWhat are the powers that be wanting us to eat right now? Where are all the food subsidies going? How is that influencing what weâre eating? Whoâs benefiting and whoâs suffering because of that?â For students, drawing those connections is really powerful, and it gives them a tangible way to analyze relations of power.

BMWâs new Super Bowl ad for the i3 is worth watching. The one-minute spot has us going back to 1994 when broadcast journalists Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric were trying to wrap their heads around what the internet is.

WARNING TO ALL LADIES IN NY: Last night this @uber driver tried to take advantage of @darlingchuck in the backseat of his car after he realized sheâd fallen asleep at the end of the ride, OUTSIDE OF OUR OWN HOME. Luckily she pushed him off and was able to run inside, but he knows where she lives and even tried to call her afterward. If you ever find yourself in his car, cancel the trip and get out. @uber what are you going to do about this? If I catch this guy trying to pull some more shit, itâs not gonna be nice for you or the driver.
