Fa Mulan has always envied her twin brother, whose fate is as set in stone as hers. However, his is at least exciting; he gets to be a knight ! Ping, however, is much less enthusiastic about his fate, and would rather go to the monks with her to become a famous wizard. Struck with a brilliant idea, Mulan suggest that they switch place and pretend that their father had twin boys, instead of one of each, so that she can become a knight in Ping’s stead. Immediately, they convince their caretakers, and at eleven years old, Mulan is brought to the capital to start her training. The beginning is hard, but after a while, she is as good as any boy. When she and the rest begin to partake in royal balls, due to their noble blood, she falls for one of the ladies. Unfortunately, should anyone discover her secret, she would be executed for treason. Even after she gains her knighthood, she tells no soul, and forces herself to love the woman from afar, too scared of the consequences if she should attempt to seek her hand in marriage.
