But he didn’t say any of that, he just gave Dash a small nod and pulled himself up onto the roof, where he draped himself up and over Dash’s window like a snake. He crossed his arms and sat listening.

Been reading "You Wouldn't Like Me Alive" by @ectoplasmranch and the setting and emotion is captured with such a nostalgic, unsettling poignancy that it's given me more than one nightmare. Perhaps the opposite of cathartic. It just keeps building and building and keeping me on the edge of my seat, in the way that each breath on a snow silenced night crystallizes and pierces you to the core. Really really lovely.

Ken Takakura is Not a Mermaid by @grabdog

As long as no one knew, he could pretend that Ken Takakura, the human boy, still existed. But he knows, he’s always known, that who he was died that day almost ten years ago, when he’d been lost and shivering and had stepped into the pool of water in the sea cave in Scotland because it seemed so warm and he was so, so cold.

(extremely good characterisations in this one. they are beautiful disasters. also, the sequel fic has some of the best horror i've ever read, in any fandom)

This is the fastest I've ever drawn a scene illustration. The words were visceral.

(i got a sneak peak of the end of this chapter, and only the end of this chapter (looks at signature date stamp) 2 years ago, and reading the Context for the scene now makes me feel Extremely Normal. I have been using the meme illustration of this scene as my phone's lockscreen for 2 years. It has been living rent free in my head for a Very Long Time. If I think about the addendums and the Danny Lore too much, i shall combust)

Ouroborus

Banshee: a spirit whose wailing heralds impending death. --- "You okay there Danny? You're allowed to relax a little. Loosen up, you know?" Danny shifts from foot to foot, his feet trying to twist in his boots. It's loosening up that Danny's trying to avoid. "I'm fine," he tries to say. But his voice prickles and the hunger screams at him that he needs to fight back. To take. His hands are shaking. He could give the crowd something to really be afraid of. "I-I'm hungry. I need to eat." "Excellent! There's a fried chicken place four blocks down that has the best home-style sauce in town." That's not what Danny meant. But some real food would be good too. --- "There are no villainous quirks" If Danny can make it through this patrol with his best friend's mentor, maybe he’ll start to believe it.

The Unknowable Tomorrow

What a good good fic. I'm so excited for the next part in the series. (the suspense! aaaa!) The way Wolfwood is characterised and written is everything to me. The premise is fascinating and executed extremely well. I think about this fic a lot.

(process stuff below the cut because figuring out the composition for this was a fun challenge!)

i usually start with a pretty loose sketch layer, but when i tried to draw out the scene i quickly realised that i would need to figure out a much more solid base before i could even think about lineart. (looking back, this is still really close to the final composition, which is cool, because the scene in the fic is really strong and when i read it i could see it very clearly in my mind)

so first, (after a few days of agonising and scheming and rotating because i knew this was going to be A Challenge and a Proper Endeavor) i drew a quick birds eye view of the scene to kinda figure out what the field of view could be. then, i drew the vehicles at different angles so that i could have something to mix and match until i found a combo where everything fit together.

(this first concepting stage took as much time as the final lineart stage, with a lot of stopping and thinking and mental gymnastics, but i think that time spent getting everything in place really paid off!)

then i made a refined sketch (still loose, but confident and with the major shapes in play.) and a quick value layer to make sure the light sources would lead the eye where i wanted.

then i drew the lineart and a refined value layer to use as a base for my colour layer. (i really like how bold and punchy this layer turned out, and i think it really helped me remember to preserve a lot of intentional contrast)

at this stage, the rendering is pretty much there and it's almost done and i have a lot of time to plan out the colours as i go.

I'm making this for me, first and foremost, but I've had some friends say that they want one too, so I'm trying to decide how many I need to order. (they'll be in my ko-fi shop if i have enough)
