âNo.â
Interruption
Complete silence. An absence of errant noise and light, a lack of unnecessary information replaced only by the cool embrace of the water around him â this is the only way he could truly find peace.
Abyssi lay submerged deep in one of the communal baths of the ghoul quarters. It was late and the sky was overcast, casting no light through the high-set windows. The water was warm and dark as the room in which he sat, and he floated perfectly still save for his dark hair which swirled lazily around him. He forwent thought in this moment, losing himself to images of his home â all he could hope to recover of that dreamlike place. He could almost feel his heart ache â if he did indeed still have one.
A sharp clack interrupted his meditation. The ghoulâs eyes shot open and he drew in a sharp breath, his gills fluttering as he did so. A humanoid hand â though scaled and tipped in wicked black claws â emerged from the water and gripped the side of the wide bathtub.
Whatever it was that disturbed him would surely pay.
The clack had come from, of all things, a human. A Sister of Sin had wandered into the communal bath, wrapped in a towel and curiously accompanied by a strange black cat. Sheâd dropped a small jar, filled with a mixture of bath salts and various accentuating herbs, and was quietly scolding the cat for walking between her ankles.Â
âYouâre lucky this didnât break! You need to stay on either side, not in between.âÂ
She made her way to an unoccupied tub and filled it with steaming water, setting up several orbs of light to hover around her while she worked. The Sister hadnât been able to sleep again, what with the nightmares getting steadily and worryingly worse. And no matter what time of night or day it was, the communal baths for the Siblings of Sin always had people in them; too many to be able to relax.Â
The blonde hadnât noticed anyone else in the baths, only looking around after sheâd gotten in to her own once her familiar started growling. The cat sat on one side of the bath, ears back as he stared fixedly at the hand gripping the side of the neighbor tub.
âSomeone there?â
The first thing he noticed was the pungent smell, a mixture of earthy scents he couldnât place. Some strange mixture humans used to imitate magic, he presumed, and apparently still contained judging by the muted scent. It was a voice that hit him next, muffled by the water around his ears, feminine in pitch, scolding in tone.
What truly piqued his interest was the soft light that filtered down to him. The light wasnât harsh and unnatural like most man-made light heâd encountered thus far. This was different, ethereal. Intriguing.
Nonetheless, this girl was still intruding on his solitude, and she had noticed him. The ghoul slowly sat up, poking only his eyes above the surface of the water. Half-glamored, his narrow jaw and high cheekbones were peppered with iridescent scales and jagged pronged horns curled from his head of long dark hair. His pupils were narrowed into slits, eyes reflecting the light eerily as he glared across at her. His gaze fell to the hissing cat crouched on the tiles and he cocked his head, a sort of chittering noise rising from the back of his throat. His eyes flicked back to the girl and he hissed, baring needle-like fangs.
âGet out.â
âNo.âÂ
The word was so plain and straightforward; this Sister had no fear. She didnât flinch or show any worry at the deep sea ghoulâs signs of aggression, grey eyes very calm. Her animal companion certainly felt threatened, continuing to growl and spit at the creature in the tub.Â
âI was let in. Iâm allowed to be in here.âÂ
She had complained about the Siblingâs baths and received some aid from a few ghoulish friends. They knew their human wouldnât ask for no reason.Â
âIâm not here to bother you. I just want to soak too, Iâll be gone in a little while.âÂ
Abyssi grumbled, not unlike an angry feline. He emerged further from the water, resting his elbows on the rim of tiles. He was used to human fear, the smell of it, the wild look they might get in their eyes like that of a cornered animal. He was used to being the cause of it.
This girl exhibited none of it.
And this intrigued him more, ever further as he peered at the orbs of light that hovered around her, catching the currents of the falling water. Angry at the intrusion though he was, he held his tongue and observed, fins rustling softly. After a moment of silence, he spoke again.
âYour beast. It doesnât seem to like me.â
âYou surprised him, heâs just nervous and wants to make sure you donât hurt me.âÂ
The human floated to the edge of the tub, mimicking the ghoulâs pose on the tile. She peered at him curiously just as he observed her. His gaze on the light orbs sheâd made didnât go unnoticed either. The Sister closed one fist, magic pulsing in it for a moment, and opened it again to let out another light. She ran a finger down the middle of it and it dimmed before floating over to Abyssi; an offering.
âAt least I hope you donât hurt me. I wouldnât want to get eaten tonight. Well I would, but in the fun way.â She gave a quiet snort of laughter and winked.Â
âIâm Cora, whatâs your name?â
He hummed, cocking his head at the feline that was currently puffed up to twice its size.
âInteresting that you humans choose to bond with some creatures and yet mistreat others. What becomes the deciding factor, I wonder?â
The ghoul dropped this train of thought, distracted by the girlâs manipulation of the light. His pupils dialated and contracted in time with the orb that dimmed and reappeared, and he followed it with his eyes as it drifted over to him.
He reached a clawed finger up to prod at it, causing it to flicker briefly. How interesting. He had yet to meet a human that had such a grasp on the arcane. Abyssi returned his attention to her, an amused snort rustling the hair in front of his eyes as he noted how she mimicked him.
âYou may call me Abyssi. It is not my real name, but it will suffice. You do not have to fear me â for now.â
The water ghoul opened his palm underneath the orb of light, studying it.
âTell me â where did you learn such things?â
âCanât say, all humans are different and have different morals and ideas of who or what is valid.â The human eyed the ghoul curiously. âSounds like you speak from experience. If thatâs true, then Iâm sorry.â
She smiled when her âgiftâ was accepted, enjoying the interest in his features. âAbyssi, then. I like it, very ominous. However, I donât think I was very scared of you to begin with but thank you for the confirmation.â She giggled, making another orb and flicking it over.Â
âI taught myself, mostly.â She admitted, levitating a blob of water up in the air above her hand and making it take the form of a fish before sending it swimming around and dropping into Abyssiâs tub. Now she was just showing off.Â
âBut now Iâm allowed to access books about magic and free reign to practice, so Iâm doing much better.â
âHm. Perhaps,â he muttered, seemingly uncommitted to believing her expression of remorse. The ghoulâs lips tightened slightly when the girl laughed at him and he scoffed, rolling his eyes. Humans were fools.
The sisterâs arcane fish distracted him from his annoyance and he followed it with his eyes, fins flaring as it plopped into the water and disappeared.
âI wasnât aware you humans could gain such abilities. Where I came from, they relied on technology and cheap enchantments to accomplish magical feats. It seems I learn more daily.â
The water ghoul studied her once more, the waterâs light reflections dancing across his face. Perhaps he could find respect for this human.
âCora,â he said, as if testing the name on his tongue, âWhy are you here? Right now, or perhaps in a general sense. What is this establishmentâs purpose to you?â
âSo youâre not from here then?â The Sister cocked her head slightly to the side, curious. âIâve never heard of anything like that before. I think the most Iâve been able to combine magic and technology was charging my phone without plugging it in.âÂ
Where did he come from, she wondered. If Hell existed on a separate plane perhaps other planes existed too.Â
âWhy am I here?â The questioning brought her head back up to look the ghoul in the eyes. âAt the time I joined I had nowhere else to go. I was scared and alone with no prospects. Here I can at least work and learn and I donât have to worry about not having a roof over my head or food to eat.â Some very real concerns sheâd had more times than she would have liked in her life.Â
âI know a lot of humans who have come here for similar reasons. Most I think are religiously invested but this church pulls in the outcasts and offers them sanctuary where they didnât have it before.â A staggeringly significant number were LGBTQ+, fleeing to the ministry from one trauma or another. She sighed. It was what it was.
âYâknow, seems kind of a waste to have two tubs going. Mind if I join yours?â The glint of Abyssiâs scales was terribly enticing and she hoped to get a little closer.
He shook his head, staring down at the water and sliding his fingers in circles on its surface.
âNo. I stepped sideways, if you will, into this world of yours. It is like a mirror of my own, and yet... different. Many things that occurred in my world seem to never have happened here. I can only wonder if Hell is different, as well.â
Abyssi listened to her, perhaps more thoughtfully than he had ever yet to listen to a human being, watching their reflections in the water shimmer and ripple. He nodded solemnly when she finished.
âI suppose I understand. They have yet to turn me out, but we shall see. I... never had the opportunity to experience this side of humanity in my world. I did not think it existed.â
The ghoul huffed through his nose, glancing up from the mesmerizing ripples and meeting Coraâs inquisitive gaze. He tilted his head, perhaps a little too far to seem a normal human gesture. His fins rustled as he mulled over her request.
âNo. I do not mind. You may join.â

Whatever it was that disturbed him would surely pay.
âYou fuckinâ bastard, you know thatâs my last one!âÂ
âBITCH! BASTARD!â
Vero was nearly out of breath, having chased the damn terror of a bird as it flew down the halls with a cigarette in is beak. Ouija, ever the obnoxious crow, had snatched it straight from her mouth while he sat perched on her shoulder.Â
While she blindly chased him she hadnât noticed that sheâd wandered into a part of the abbey that was new to her: the communal baths. After hearing quite a few stories about the place, the halfling was thankful that sheâd been lucky enough to have her own private bath, however claustrophobic it was.Â
The cawing of the crow and fluttering of his wings echoed through the large bath house as it perched up in a high rafter.Â
âYou are so lucky I like you, or else youâd be deep fried by now,â Vero said.
She crossed her arms, angrily deciding to let the bird have his cancer stick when she became aware of the sound of faint growling.Â
That was when she noticed the ghoul, partially shifted and glaring furiously at her from one of the tubs. Her tail flicked in agitation as she recognized him.Â
âOh, for fuckâs sake...â she grumbled.Â
Abyssiâs spine-studded brow quirked as he recognized the figure who bumbled her way into his current territory, spitting insults after a crow that now sat perched on a windowsill across the room.
For the love of all thatâs unholy, he thought. Itâs you.
The water ghoul hissed, a stream of bubbles popping along the water that sloshed against his nose. Of all the people it could have been, it had to be this little fool of a spitefire. The ghoul ground his teeth, a dull anger simmering in his belly. The last time heâd seen Vero, she had beaten the hell out of him. Resentfully, he hadnât forgotten that.
His fins rattled in annoyance as he reluctantly pulled himself up to his shoulders, claws clasped around the tile rim of the tub.
âYouâre still here.â His voice was flat and low, a bitter drawl.
âYou are interrupting me, halfling. Get out.
âAnd take your rude little avian with you.â
The half ghoul bristled, her first instinct to bring his water to a rolling boil, but then she smirked. She didnât feel threatened by the ghoul. Even though she could see that he was much more unglamored than he had been during their fight, and not to mention, surrounded by his element.
âNah, I donât think I will,â she said, shedding her jacket and starting to take off her boots.
She began to fill an adjacent tub, enveloping the bottom with a low, rolling flame to get it nice and warm.
âThese are the communal ghoul baths. If you want privacy, maybe you should get a single, like me.â
If she wanted a scalding soak, she could easily take her own advice and head back there. But Abyssiâs clear agitation was much more entertaining. Cute, almost, if he wasnât such a prick.
Not caring about the deep sea ghoulâs grumbling or the possibility of him watching her, Vero stripped down, finally tossing her bra absentmindedly behind her as she stepped into the wonderfully warm water.
She heard a subsequent hiss and splash as the garment had landed right in front of the other ghoul. Vero laughed, letting herself submerge up to her chin as she rested her head. The tip of her tail poked out of the other end and she flicked a spray of hot water at the frustrated ghoul.
âOh, no.â
His claws screeched across the tile as she took off her boots.
âNo, no.â
Off came the shirt and trousers.
âNo, no, noââ
His frustrated pleading was cut off by the plop of Veroâs bra, thrown haphazardly in a ball in front of him. Abyssi recoiled, his sudden movement sending water sloshing over the sides of the tub. Snarling, the ghoul pulled himself fully out of the water, crouchin on the rim of the basin like some sort of feral beast. He was so furious it nearly steamed the water off of his scaley skin.
Abyssi gingerly scooped up her bra with his claws, scoffed at it, and tossed it back at her, where it landed in the water beside the half-ghoul. Though he glared at her acusatorily, he could not help but take notice of her form, lounged tauntingly across the opposite basin. Disgustingly, aggrivatingly attractive â wait, no, stop thatâ
The water ghoul flexed his fins and shook his head like a dog, sending beads of water in every direction. He replaced the disturbing thought with anger.
âThat was not an invitation, half-ghoul. I donât care if this is a âpublicâ space. In these hours, it is my space. My haven. And youâve ruined it with yourâyourâunruly antics.â
Pleased by Abyssiâs uncomfortable pleas, Vero only laughed and simmered comfortably in the tub. Only when her bra splashed back at her, and the shadow of the spiny, seething ghoul loomed over her did she look up.
Instinctively, she began to shift slightly. Beneath the water her limbs began to morph to a dark grey, working from her feet to her knees and then fingertips to elbows. Her own spines made an appearance.
She took in his form: there was nothing left to the imagination.
âMy bite from our last little tumble healed up real nice, huh?â she huffed, trying to avert her eyes and deflect. âThink I lost a tooth in there.â
Long haired, prickly, pretty fucking fish, she thought. And unruly? Oh, I could certainly get more unruly than this.
Vero didnât snap up to meet his scowl, but instead continued to lounge. Sheâd kicked his ass before, so there was no reason she couldnât do it again. But now she stared back at him and she scraped her claws at the inside of the porcelain soaking tub as she entertained the idea of digging them into him again, skin to skin, thrashing, like a dance...
She looked away from him and at the steam rolling off the lip of the tub.
âWell, Iâm rather enjoying myself. So Iâm not moving unless you make me. But careful: the waterâs hot.â
A growl rumbled in the back of his throat and he leered at her, leaning over the tub like a scraggly gargoyle. Her own shift began and it startled him, though he did his best to mask it. He followed the tangle of grey that slowly trickled up her arms, followed it as it faded into pink human flesh and up the arm to her collar bone, up to where her pulse beat in her throatâ
âI havenât forgotten that spat, fire ghoul,â he retorted, claws scraping white into the dark tile. âAnd if my memory serves, I gave you quite the shock as well.â
Vero simply stared at him, lips slightly parted as she dragged claws along the edge of the basin and he nearly squirmed under her gaze. His fins twitched, nostrils flaring slightly. The heat from her bath water was becoming unbearable even from where he crouched.
âDonât tempt me. I just might try.â
It was no secret that the furious ghoul was eyeing Vero up and down, particularly as she subtly shifted to a more ghoulish form. Still, she stayed cool and collected, simmering under his livid gaze. The water wasnât the only thing in the tub heating up.
Her form was peppered with scars here and there, which wasnât out of the ordinary for ghouls - always brawling for whatever reason - and only a trained eye would be able to tell that hers were from tissue samples and the like.Â
The memory of the strange, painful current that the deep sea ghoul had hit her with made her huff, steam coming from her nostrils and beginning to obscure her form beneath the water.
She sat up, eyes now a full, bloody red sclera and blaring back at his own.Â
âYouâre all talk then,â she said, voice low, scattered with ghoulish clicks. âIâm soaking in your own element and youâre,â she paused, a chittering laugh, a splash from her swaying tail, entertained, excited. âafraid to dive in, arenât you?â
His chest puffed up. Afraid? Him? How dare this little ghoulette challenge him so? A ghoul so much older than she, who has seen more than she could ever imagine?
Abyssi snorted and leaped into the water with her all at once, his fins twitching at the scalding heat. He stood over her, glaring down with flaring nostrils.
âAs if I could be afraid of you,â he hissed, fins still wriggling involuntarily. âIâve faced worse than a little heat.â His eye twitched as he spoke.
The sea ghoul peered at her, noticing her scarring for the first time. For a moment, his indignation was halted in its place. Familiar. Without thinking, he reached out a webbed hand and touched a scar that knotted over her collarbone, reaching up with his other hand to point out a similar scar of his own. His fingers wandered to the dull, jagged scar tissue that riddled his left shoulder. He said nothing, only tilted his head curiously and hummed.

The new Brother of Sin had taken up a slight obsession with the demonic creatures that inhabited the abbey known as Ghouls. Lex couldn't quite explain why, but there was something alluring about their powers, their physical form, their culture. As a result, he spent most of his free time lurking around the Ghoul dorms, watching quietly, or chatting up those who were friendly. This time, he stumbled upon an unfamiliar Ghoul hunched over a desk, doing something to his... arm? That was different.
@incubusoftheundertow â
Abyssi hissed through his teeth as a shower of sparks erupted in his face â again. How could he have been so careless? This world was not his own. He couldnât afford to be left vulnerable, not yet â and yet here he was, curled up at a moldy desk in the most cramped, dark corner he could find, rummaging around inside his arm with a pair of wirecutters.
It was a strange sight, he was sure, which was precisely why the ghoul was trying to be as discreet as possible. His arm was laid out before him palm up on the table, hexagonal plates of false flesh splayed out on metallic hinges, revealing tangled wiring within that glowed with faint aquamarine light from deep within. One such wire was frayed, burnt out and sparking periodically. He was attempting its removal.
The hairs on his neck rose suddenly and the water ghoul stiffened, breath hitching in his throat. He was being watched.
Slowly, he placed the tool on the desk beside him and turned his head to the side, nostrils flaring as he sniffed the air. A human. Typical. He grit his teeth, the tangled hair in his eyes and the curvature of his spine making him appear ragged and untamed.
âArenât you lot taught that it is rude to stare?â

âI may be new to this particular facet of reality, but as some of you might say, I do not think that is âa thingâ.â
