The Genetics
If you wanted to go give this post some love for Christmas, Iād really appreciate it!!
I spent the WHOLE semester translating and working on epic poetry, the Iliad, the Homeric Hymns and the Aeneid. I learned about rhetorical terms, figures of speech and metrical device, and I had a hard time wrapping my brain around some as it didn't feel like they really added that much to the text , only to just now realize I do some of them instinctively!
Like enjambement specifically. When I rewrite my notes and add explanations, I'll purposely write key words on the next line so that when I revise they jump out more easily.
Like how!!! How did it take me that long to realize it's instinctive.
Maya C. Popa, from Wound is the Origin of Wonder: Poems: āAll inner life runs at some delayā
Thereās absolutely no way a girl in my class (who is always late) just went up to the teacher and said she āforgot to take down half the notesā and so asked for his notes?!?
Like I get asking for references, readings, even time to review something you didnāt understand but donāt just straight up tell you didnāt take notes?

JRR Tolkien
Big questionā¦
How did you find your subject for your masterās degree?
Iām not even five minutes into Kaos and Iām already loving it!
Iām begging everyone to please go listen to Mythomane by Thomas Hellman on any platform.
Heās retelling Greek myths in his own way, inspired by American music from the 50ās as well as local legends and tales (from QuĆ©bec). Thereās music, he changes his voice for different characters, etc. Basically what it couldāve been like hearing the Iliad and the Odyssey back then but with a modern twist.
June spread!!!
I know I started this one late but itās been hard lately to keep up with stuff (but in a good way, so yay!)
I plan on making more collages as the month goes by so stay tuned (:
I usually say I donāt have a favourite word in Ancient Greek, but every time I go to the theatre, but especially during the FTA, Iām reminded of the word κάθαĻĻιĻ.
A few years back, I saw a play called Germinal, a French and Belgian production if Iām not mistaken. At first I thought nothing much of it. Honestly not much had happen during the play and it left me with no impression. My teacher, who used to barely give his opinions on the plays we watched, did asked us if we thought this was actually the whole point. That for an hour and a half we got to see something, be absorbed in it and forget about the outside world. That maybe not all plays are meant to leave you thinking about how you should change the world or yourself.
This conversation stuck with me. And itās been like 5 years at least. The play did end with the word catharsis repeated over and over and over. And ever since then⦠idk I go to the theatre to hopefully feel that catharsis. If I get more out of a play then great! But I mostly want for an hour or two to feel too much emotions that arenāt mine and leave happier, lighter, than when I came in.
Can some of you give me some advices?
My Ancient Greek teacher just wrote to me asking if Iād be interested in becoming a her research assistant on one of her projects. My for thought was āyes, of courseā but anxiety crept in and now Iām a bit nervous. Iāve never done that before and frankly Iāve never really done any big research projects at school at all (Iām an undergrad but still, research really isnāt my forte).
Do any of you have experience being a research assistant and wouldnāt mind sharing your experience?
Does anyone know if thereās an equivalent to the Theoi website but for Norse mythology?
I wanted to do some very light research but Iām very very unfamiliar with Norse mythology and donāt really know where to start.
Big shoutout to The Song of Achilles for letting me be half decent in the CAC Latin Sight Translation Competition today!
On this beautiful day, I am reminded of last semester when I asked my classmate with it was possible to kill someone already dead⦠because I sure wanted to stab Caesar myself after translating his work.
