Jackie Morris is one of my favorite artists and I was so thrilled to see a new book by her and Robert Macfarlane.

book post! #2 of the year - the iliad, tr. emily wilson. I don’t really see this as something I can “review” beyond my experience of it; I’m not a scholar in the area lol. so glad I read it though :)

I think one of the most striking parts to me were the direct repetitions of sets of lines - I was familiar with epithets and enjoyed spotting those, but the repetition of a message exactly during a scene in which a character is asked to deliver a message and then does so was interesting to me. Same with the phrasing of family histories. While I didn’t always do it, I enjoyed consulting the translation notes for different lines in the text.

Those gods sure are meddlesome, huh.

Not seeing many people talk about this on Tumblr, so gonna spread the word myself: Webtoon is going to start using AI for translations and an AI chat bot with comic characters. If you're against this you should delete your account, and if you are publishing on the website, you should consider moving to other alternatives and especially having your own website to host your comic.

Also needless to say that Webtoon can absolutely afford to hire translators, this is just yet another way to not pay the people who are making the company behind Webtoon absurdly rich.

And for the people who might see this as a good decision:

Something that gave H.P. Lovecraft nightmares is the work of my favorite artist. In "At the Mountains of Madness" he specifically mentions "the strange and disturbing Asian paintings of Nicholas Roerich."
