the last thing jennie had wanted to do today was go with her mother to work. however, the older woman had insisted that she at least spend the day getting an idea of what the life of a lawyer was like, at which point jennie had noted that she had no desire of becoming a lawyer.

her mother looked at her like she was crazy.

which was how she found herself wandering in this law office, wearing a stuffy suit and a dress that fit her in all the wrong places. she tugged down on the skirt and frowned, not paying attention to where she was going.

however, it seemed like she wasn’t the only one not paying attention because the next thing she knows, she’s on the ground, a loud thud having sounded from her hitting the ground. she yelped just a bit as she looked up at the male. “ah, yeah, i guess so,” she mumbled as she finally got up with his help. “you should be careful. you could have knocked over a partner,” she pointed out. that wouldn’t have been very good for his career progression.

All the panic fades and he releases a sigh of relief. “Thank god, my boss would kill me if someone files a lawsuit against the firm.” And that is the last thing he needs is to be under fire for causing an incident. He’s already was warned as an intern and warned once again once he accepted the position. He has goals to achieve and he can’t afford to do anything to jeopardize it. However, he does find himself curious at the girl’s words.

“Partner? Oh, like my supervisor? I don’t quite understand what you mean.” He questions with a tilt of the head. “Are you an intern?” It was a logical explanation for the weird usage of the word ‘partner’. She seemed young enough to be one, she’s dressed appropriately and holds herself well. There weren’t any hints of it being some sort of ‘bring your kid to work’ event either with the lack of screaming children.

He does finds it strange however that she’s walking aimlessly by herself. Interns would be scolded and herded back to their tiny cubicles. There was that big case after all and the opportunity of the life time for pre-law students.

He kneels down to gather together his files and papers, but continues to speak. “If you are, shouldn’t you be with the others?”

** chainsmokers: an accident**

“i’d expected you to smell like nicotine as a result of being around too many kids who consume it on the daily.”

wonwoo’s fingers tremble against his glasses, hand soon settling on his nape as he greets the elder with this single line. he doesn’t bother looking up, back resting comfortably against the brick wall of the recreation building’s entrance hall. a spare pack of cigarettes are in his back pocket, obvious when his hand falls down from his neck to open up the box and take a stick.

“had it not been obvious on me?”

He just has to smile through this. Stay quiet, nod and smile. Pretend that he agrees with the bullshit he’s hearing.

It’s a healing experience, a place to allow individuals to bond over their shared struggles—it’s bullshit. Mere small talk to engage and integrate the new faces within the circle. Siyoon could care less. He promised his sister he would try, but that didn’t mean he would. Promises are empty and habits are hard to break. This habit was one he couldn’t afford to lose.

His focus fades away, tuning out the stories, the discussion, the support group entirely. His attention shifts. He glances at the student sitting across from him. He shouldn’t be surprised to see a student in this sort of program. He isn’t. Rather he’s more curious on why. It isn’t in his place to pry. There’s barely a relationship between the two, yet he can’t help but to be curious. Who wouldn’t be—and he could probably say the same for the younger.

But he has his own secrets to keep, an image to uphold, yet it had crumbled the moment he stepped foot into the room.

He finds himself in the same spot he was before. His hand finds its way back into his pant pocket, searching for a pack—it’s fruitless. There’s no point and he still tried. He allows a shaky breath to escape and he leans his head against the brick wall. He feels a presence next to his, looking over to find his student occupying the space next to him.

Siyoon smiles, greeting the younger with a sharp laugh. “You would think that, but—“ his fingers twitch, “I try to cover it up. I wouldn’t be living up to my image if I didn’t.”

But what image is there to maintain? Not when his habits are left bare for everyone to see.

He eyes the boy as he reaches for his back pocket, raising a questioning brow as he pulls out a pack—he picks out a stick, then another. Siyoon remains silent, saying nothing despite his curiosity. Of course there would be a hidden spare.

He merely shakes his head. “No, but I can assume that that’s for me, right?”

“yeah–” his voice cracks. fuck. what the fuck. “i am. i–” he forces himself to drag his ass over by the desk. notes and textbooks suddenly heavy in his bag. fingers pick at the loose strands from the hem of his cardigan. he almost trips on his own two feet. “i’m not really sure how to argue with a philosophical idea,” he admits, voice unconsciously timid. the ethics of ambiguity is exactly that - ambiguous. “considering it’s… their idea.” much like these sessions.

what kind of hell am i in right now?

Joy, all he feels is joy.

The timidness present on his student’s face brings him pure joy. He had never thought that there would be a day that he actually enjoys it when a student asks for assistance and yet here he is. It’s different from the usual he helps. Many are straight to the point, others argumentative and some are completely clueless, but Jeonghan brings in a completely different type of student. A new specimen for him to observe, pick at and experiment on, or maybe he’s purely interested because he’s “dating” his little hoobae Lee Hyeri.

Besides that there;s a charming quality that the student has. It stirs an emotion that Siyoon hasn’t experienced in a long time—something that he can’t exactly put a finger on. Adoration? No, definitely no. Affection? It’s closer, but no the emotion he’s looking for. Well, whatever what the emotion is, it brings out a side that he’s rarely shown. He has an urge to dote on him, tease him (as if he wasn’t already) and torture him. He can’t help but to think: yes, Yoon Jeonghan is definitely his favorite.

The boy is practically smitten for him and he finds it hilarious. He’s practically whipped, but he chooses to feign ignorance.

He beckons Jeonghan to come closer—tilting his head in curiosity. What had he done to cause that? And then he stumbles. The student stumbles and Siyoon can’t help but to laugh. Whether it’s at him or with him—he can’t say for sure (which is a lie of course—it’s definitely at him).

He covers the laugh with his hand. “Have I told you that you’re adorable?”

The laughs subsides and he clears his throat. “Aside from that, it shouldn’t be too hard?” Well, not for someone as vocal as him. “Just imagine that the paper is Dr. Kim and words should flow out naturally—“ he flashes a charming smile, “right?” He pulls out Jeonghan’s papers from his folders—why the old man chose hard copies over digital, he’ll never understand—and places it on the desk. “Now let’s take a look at your paper, shall we?”

The club fair is the least of his worries—Hyeri has it all handled after all. She has grandiose plans and there hasn’t ever been a time where he’s simply been against her ideas. She knows what to do best in situations like this after all. What he does have to worry about is the declining sanity of their best speaker, Im Jaebum. Even if Siyoon is a cause of this decline, he still has to worry. He’s their coach, the one that guides them to the path of victory. Every year (since he’s coached the debate team) so far they’ve simply passed out fliers, attempt to catch the attention of freshman and persuade them to join.

It was a bore, yes—but it was easy and efficient.

But of course, Hyeri does anything but easy and efficient. With her as president, everything is under her jurisdiction. She’s decides on what they should do and she makes the final decision. Lee Hyeri rules with an pink-cladded iron first. Of course, he had ensured that nothing they did broke any regulations—there wasn’t any rules of how they could promote their small club.

He’s still in his office—he had purposely asked to take a day off from his TA duties for the club. They had to be at their table before the rush of students come in. He quickly texts Jaebum and leaves his office, locking the door and taping a note onto it notifying that he won’t be in his office for the day,

「sms ⇉ captain im」 : meet me at the booth in ten? we need to set everything up 「sms ⇉ captain im」 : also please don’t die on me ^^ I need you alive 「sms ⇉ captain im」 : you’re one of our only sane members left

And now he prays that everything goes right.

There are times when he thinks he made a poor occupational choice. Sometimes he believes that he was a bit too eager when accepting the job offer. Yes, he’s a bright, charismatic and intellectual youth—but it doesn’t mean they’re allowed to work him this much. His supervisor (he loves her, she’s his role model and he wants his sister to be her one day) is a slave driver and constantly leaves him scrambling to organize the evidence and information she shoved at him. He’s already been labelled as “fresh meat” and there’s such heavy expectations for him with his academic credentials.

He loves and hates it. It’s something he can never make up his mind on.

But it’s fine! He thinks (he hopes). It’s just a year or two as a paralegal before he returns to school. He just has to suffer through this until he has everyone wrapped around his fingers. Then he’s certain to hold a spot on their team of lawyers. There’s already a plan set in mind—a list he had created his last year in high school.

He’ll be on top of the world and there would be no one to stop hi—he stumbles into a body, his files slip out of his arms and there’s a faint thud. He looks down, eyes wide and immediately crouches to help the girl up. “I’m so sorry! It’s my fault, I wasn’t paying attention.” He grabs the girl’s arm and stands her up. “Are you okay? I was so preoccupied with this case—“

** chainsmokers: an accident**

Smoke curls around his fingers and the pungent scent of ash fills the air. There’s a sort of irony that he can’t help but to laugh at. This program was meant to help him and yet he finds himself lighting another cigarette. A smokers help program was the last thing he thought he would be a part of and yet here he was with a cigarette resting between his fingers. He throws it on the ground and puts it out with the sole of his shoe. He had caved under the eyes of his younger sister. He wasn’t going to go originally—but under her insistence he had signed up for it.

(“You have to! I learned that smoking is bad and I don’t want you to die Yoonie.”)

Smoking is bad and he’s really only doing this for his sister.

He enters the building—quickly finding the room, smiling politely at the occupants in the room, sits and waits. The program begins the moment the last person sits with the circle. A tray is passed around and everyone disposes of their cigarette packets and lighters into it. Introductions start immediately after, everyone going in a circle stating their name, age, and an activity they like. Siyoon finds himself dozing off after the fifth introduction, losing his focus entirely. He startles awake at the sound of a familiar voice attached to a familiar name.

His brows furrow together and he looks up. Eye contact is made with a familiar face and he almost falls out of his seat. It’s one of his students, one of his favorites, one of the only ones that actually submits a well-rounded paper that he could appreciate. He curses under his breath. What are the chances of this happening? None.

(“Nothing will happen!” His sister had told him when he had visited home and yet the very thing he had dreaded just occurred.)

Now, why Jeon Wonwoo, out of all places would be here is another thought.

Before he realizes it, it’s his turn. The group shifts their attention to him and no matter how much he loves being the center of attention. This is the one time he despises it. “Hello, I’m Yoon Siyoon, twenty-seven, and I like philosophical debates.” He glances around the circle, eyes landing on Wonwoo and he flashes a desperate smile. “Nice to meet you all.”

He’s so fucked and there wasn’t anything he could do.

It takes almost everything for Siyoon to keep a pleasant demeanor around the students that ask for his help. There’s never a steady flow of students that come in—most just email him. There are his regulars, but he knows to prepare himself for dispute over their latest grades. Siyoon has never understood why students choose him over the professor, he has no say on their final grade, just their scores on the papers they are assigned. It would be more beneficial to dispute with the professor, but why does it matter? It isn’t like they care and he doesn’t have the right to complain. He is being paid for his “contributions to the university,” so why does it matter?

It is an attempt to understand the world of working with clients—he’s been too accustomed to running around scrambling for documents. The harsh world of law, as he would like to believe. Although being a professor’s assistant is much more flexible than his previous job, he can’t help but to miss the busy-work—but there are sacrifices he has to make if he wants to turn up successful.

A soft knock interrupts him from his thoughts. He looks up and calls out a loud, “come in.”

The door creaks open and he looks up—his face brightens at the sight of his favorite student, Yoon Jeonghan. He isn’t his favorite because he’s smart, or doing well in class. No, he’s doing terribly, probably the worst if it weren’t for the one student that constantly spews nonsense from his mouth. He’s his favorite for the entertainment that he brings to Siyoon.

There are the biting remarks against the professor (something he loves—listening to the old man’s complaints brings him so much joy) and his seeming incapability to keep a straight face in front of him. Siyoon can’t hep but to find it adorable.

“Jeonghannie!” He immediately greets. “Are you here for some tutoring? Your paper had a sound argument, but it’s almost as if you weren’t even trying!”
