Another way to interpret the rainbow symbolism that follows Grace throughout the movie is luck

Stratt was lucky he agreed to help with the astrophage when she found him in his classroom

She was lucky he wasn't killed in the explosion with Dubois and Shapiro

She was lucky he was (physically) fit for the mission

And Rocky was so, so fucking lucky that he found Grace in the Tau Ceti system

Grace was genuinely a miracle to both Earth and Erid and the rainbow that follows him throughout the movie is a reminder of that

A very deep headcanon I hold is that when Grace said he had “a lot of mean things” to say to Stratt back on Earth, what he *actually* did was send a photo in the beetles of himself flipping off the camera (scandalous) while playing Minesweeper for Windows 3.1 because Stratt said during the intellectual property trial that the Hail Mary “probably wouldn’t need it” and he wanted to spite her.

Project Hail Mary has me making edits (something I’ve never done before) and I’m tempted to make an Eva Stratt animatic and post it on my art account (I don’t animate).

suddenly thinking about the courtroom scene, of Stratt being accused of pirating literally everything, and Grace later having everything in the various computers aboard his ship that he gave a copy to Rocky without issue, and the beetles having such a massive memory capacity and...

Stratt was a historian. She wasn't just pirating for the sake of entertainment for the astronauts, she was doing a full historical backup of the planet. Who knows how much knowledge and communications ability, how much art and culture and history, how much niche knowledge of how to make specific pieces of modern technology or modern medicines, was lost as the wars for resources isolated everyone, as the death tolls led to the deaths of specialized trade workers and scientists, as the power grids failing across the planet (or cut off, potentially) led to all the cloud servers going dark. Stratt was facing methods of combating extinction and she did her best to ensure that if/when the Hail Mary worked, it would send back not just the hope of the future in the solution to the astrophage, but the restoration of history and culture and knowledge.

Just.... she pirated everything, and put it all on the Hail Mary.

Grace’s multitudes is what I love about him.

He has an ego. If presented into an argument, he’ll take the “I’m right, you’re wrong” route. He can get smug when he’s proven right; and he’s stubborn about his stances until proven otherwise (see: Lokken & Astrophage). He’ll go down with said stances despite risk to his career. But then he’s also a coward who runs away from criticisms and abandons this career.

He also has low self-esteem. There’re lines in the movie and book where he diminishes his role to a junior high school teacher or “just another scientist” in Stratt’s Vat. He admonishes himself as unqualified because he’s a replacement for other qualified people (in the book). He’s surprised when told point-blank about his role and importance.

One might argue that this low self-esteem (his diminutive attitude) is actually self-denial of his importance—another symptom of his cowardice; which I don’t disagree with. I just think both aren’t mutually exclusive. He’s a cocktail of confident, self-deprecating, and in-denial thoughts. Three of those co-existing and feeding off each other to form… a leaky space blob.

I know there's a popular headcanon that Grace's crew died because of feeding tubes malfunction (based on the paperwork Grace was doing right before the explosion), but — in the book he specifically says that even after the accident he kept dealing with that same paperwork on minor Hail Mary issues, so I doubt that feeding tube problem was left unaddressed. May I offer instead:

Grace was put into coma by the people who cared about him. They (especially Yáo being Yáo) probably double-triple-quadruple checked everything. They watched him sleep for those first few days — I doubt they went into coma immediately after leaving Earth's orbit. They probably talked to him, assuring him that he'll be okay.

Ilyukhina's coma procedure was probably supervised by Yáo. He made sure that everything was in order, but — he is just one man and he is not a doctor. There was much more room for mistakes.

When Yáo went to sleep, he was alone. He had to rely on the technology completely.

We know that he died first.

i love that we get rocky’s POV in the movie and i specifically love when he looks at grace any time grace is speaking

eridians emit sound from 5 different sets of vocal chords. not only is information 6x more condensed because of the layering of different tones and chords, it is spread out and dispersed and I think that makes total sense for a species that relies on sound to get an accurate representation of form. aside from the amazing puppeteering in the movie, the way rocky glides his arms and claws through the air as he intones different words and names literally act as a amplifier or transducer for certain sounds - so language becomes an experience of literally moving the dense air around oneself. the movements they make are intentional, which is so diametrically opposite to the movements humans make, sometimes without even thinking. all their movements serve purpose.

back to rocky POV - when grace speaks the sound of his voice acoustically reverberating through his chest and out of his mouth causes a ripple around his face which blurs the shape rocky is able to see based off of his 'echolocation'.

it'd be like when the sun is in your eyes for humans

rocky has become accustomed to it and has seen grace work quietly enough to have memorized the shape and plains of his face even when it disappears so his voice can take its place

and I keep thinking about eridians being puzzled about how formless grace seems to be, of how thin and simplistic his actual speaking voice is in comparison to what eridians can do with their vocal chords and its so omnidirectional that its blinding and all of the extra motion he makes when he talks and exists does not support his sounds in the way any of them are accustomed to - and thats outside all of the other ways human form is constantly changing and making noise (bending, stretching, weight gain or loss, breathing, squishy, vulnerable etc.)

so naturally, im thinking of names being treated as stories in eridian language, and the more you experience and accomplish, the more highly revered, cared for, loved, the longer the name

Rocky: “What is white powder in storage. Cannot recognize compound. Question?”

Grace: *forgot there’s a batch of heroin on the ship*

It’s… called heroin. It’s an opioid drug derived from opium poppy plants back on Earth. Opioids interact with nerve cells to reduce pain signals from reaching our brains.

Rocky: Like painkiller. Grace in pain from injury. But painkiller supply low. Grace should use heroin. Statement.

Grace: …well, it isn’t really used medically so that might not be a good idea.

Rocky: If not medicine, what for. Question?

He was thinking of using heroin to numb his injury so he’s not adverse to the idea of using recreational drugs (tbf it was just a glancing thought & he was in a lot of pain). What the hell did you do in your formative years Grace??? Were you attending ragers in grad school?

I’m painting a picture of a young Ryland Grace who has an ego (called his superior and colleagues idiots for disagreeing with him), has anger issues (destroys and hits stuff when mad), and apparently DID recreational drugs before.

Young Ryland is an enigma to me.

I’m two-thirds into the book and Grace hasn’t told Rocky yet that he has amnesia. Rocky’s here baffled as to why Grace doesn’t know much about his ship and Grace is like “better not tell my new best friend that I don’t know much about the ship because I can’t remember.” Like Grace this is an important thing to mention when you’re in a spaceship.

Once they set their trip to Erid and Grace reveals his backstory, Rocky’s gonna have the Eridian equivalent of an aneurysm.

What’s interesting to me is that I do think she kept him around because he’s a junior high school teacher. It’s not the only reason she kept him around, though it’s one of her reasons.

You have this guy who has a teaching degree you could use as a mouthpiece to explain scientific concepts to you in layman’s terms. Plus, he’s a disgraced biologist unaffiliated from any organizations, so you know he’s not loyal to anyone with an agenda. He’s in this project solely for kids that aren’t his own—who has the same concern for the world as you. All of this is a bonus to his specialization, so you keep him around ‘cause he’s useful. You drag him to every important meeting and ask for his opinion. You consult with him before making definite decisions.

And this was before she found out about his coma-resistance gene. Oh Eva Stratt you are killing me.

If Eridians ever find out that a portion of humans bleed once a month and it lasts for days, do you think they’d freak out initially

me: so you see, even if andy weir says he didn't intend for your story to be political, there remains an intense underlying political message in your earth's journey to survival. hope and collaboration are just as political and perhaps even more radical as dystopia in this day and age. and to just throw all that away and say we're all reading into it is a disservice both to the readers who fell in love with you as a character, and to the very ideals you represent.
