[What's your favourite thing about your muse?]
//We’re going to be here for a long time because I love this beautiful disaster of a man in so many ways. I’ll try to focus on just one thing, but even that will probably get long.
Harry sees things that other people don’t. He notices fine details in mannerisms that suggest hidden motivations (Whiskey) can tell you the difference between a derby and an oxford shoe from looking at the seams from far away, differentiates between almost identical-looking species of butterflies–and most importantly of all, sees potential in Eggsy where everyone else just sees a deadbeat chav with no future. It is this act of seeing that is both the blessing and the curse of his character. Arthur doesn’t take him seriously because Arthur cannot see what Harry sees, but even Arthur has to admit that such attention to detail is the most important skill for any spy to have.
In stark contrast to the universal external missions that involve saving the world, it seems like every single personal conflict Harry has is about being set apart and not being understood. Even the conflict with Eggsy surrounding the Dog Test was a matter of misunderstanding. Harry seemed to always know on some level that it would be a blank. This could be because he learned from the experiences of all the other fake-out tests (the interrogation test, the parachute test, etc.) his pure unadulterated faith in Kingsman, or both. I’d like to think both. Eggsy, always something of a slave to the present moment (unable to complete the military, pursue gymnastics and commit to anything else long-term because of present moment emergencies) hadn’t even considered the bigger picture at the time. It’s even more heartbreaking when you consider what happens next. Harry probably suspected he might not have come out of that church alive. There’s lots of fan meta out there that suggests he may have even willingly chose not to dodge Valentine’s bullet. Regardless, he knew that in the long run, this might have been his last exchange with Eggsy. With that in mind, the fact that Harry pegged Whiskey right away and Eggsy fought with him over it is just another example.
I think maybe the reason why Harry’s ability to see things differently is my favorite aspect of him is that because it gives me hope. Even considering all the conflict that results in him being that way, it’s still a net positive that allows him to excel in the niche he’s carved out for himself. I’d like to think that maybe there;s a chance for all of us who don’t quite fit in to adapt and transform and be the best versions of ourselves.
