Very recently, I bought a nice 64oz stainless steel insulated water bottle. It's really nice. It came with three different lids: a cap, a spout, and a straw. It came with a sling that had a pocket in it. It kept my water cold after almost 4 hours in 90+ degree heat on blacktop standing next to a car. I kind of love it.

But after drinking from it for a few days, I started coming down with a cough that just wouldn't let up. My first thought was, maybe I need to clean the mouthpiece and straw more frequently. It seems far-fetched to me that it would be so nasty after single-digit days of use -- hell, less than a month of ownership -- but I decided to clean it thoroughly. The inside of the bottle, and the straw and lid with the included straw brush.

Using it tonight, I got maybe four draws of water before I was coughing. But this time I realized, it felt like my throat was swollen, as with my soft palette and my tongue. That struck me as odd and I started thinking, "What is this bottle actually made of?" It turns out it's made of a stainless steel alloy called 18/8 (304). Looking that up reveals that the numbers refer to the content of the alloy: 18% chromium, 8% nickel.

... I'm allergic to nickel. :(

I think I've found a solution already. RTiC makes a 64oz ceramic-lined insulated bottle, and it's a reasonable price (or at least it is right now). So I have a plan there, as disappointed as I am about it. I'm also going to lose the sling, which is one of the major selling points of the original bottle, but I can probably make (or convince my partner to make) one myself.

But first off, this reaction tonight has actually been pretty bad. Like. Way worse than before with way less of an amount. I've taken an antihistamine just in case, and I'm not worried about my throat closing up, but this sucks.

And second, it's making me think of other things around the apartment. Like... We have a stainless steel crockpot. It took awhile to find what its alloy is, and it's an 18/10, so it has even more nickel in it! Are we destined to have to ditch this pot? We were just about to get serious about changing over to stainless steel cookware all-around.

And then I think, ... Is this what has been making me feel so bad? Is this what has been causing my voice to be so constricted? I'm worried now. When I go to work and wear my magnetic nametag, I'm allergic enough to the nickel in it that I have to wear a t-shirt under my uniform shirt to prevent a breakout (and the hives from that breakout now last for weeks!). I already started using a mechanics' belt, well over a decade ago.

You know? Is this gonna be my life now? Is this a dairy-free meal cooked in a pot without nickel? Do I have to start .. how do you find silverware that doesn't have nickel?? I'm gonna be so mad if I have to hunt down nickel-free silverware.
