Ray wouldn’t get started on the puppy eyes – no way he’d fall for that trick again ( plot twist, he would ). So he had a small softspot for the boy - so what? Eyes glanced over to Zander now – his attention had been grabbed at the mention of food. A lunch date wouldn’t be so bad now, would it? Besides, the two of them wouldn’t exactly be outside in the scorching sun that way. ‘ A French cafe? How romantic. Are you trying to sweep me off my feet? ‘ Was that supposed to be a joke, or was he being sarcastic? Either way, Ray seemed to be on board with the idea of eating – when was the last time he’d eaten anyway? ‘ Lead the way then, unless you wanna stand here like an idiot all day. ‘

“  r-romantic? sweep you..off..”         his face turned red like a bouquet of roses, all it’s blooms     springing open at once.                   “..well..i mean. it is kinda..l-like a date, huh..” he averted his gaze away from the shorter teen’s figure, his heart pumping at the idea of him and Ray going on a date. as much as he dreamed for, he couldn’t just...say what they’re doing practically is a date.  “ the only thing we’re missing is some pda and sweet talk. and maybe a flower arrangement. ”  he tried to joke lightly, but it was making his situation a whole lot worse. 

  “ yes, let’s be on our way!”  he grabbed Ray’s wrist, without really thinking about it , and started walking super fast.   why did he have to make his heart so weird whenever he’s around !? how could he feel so weak in his knees whenever he even said anything like that! it just, how could someone like him would be so capable of making his heart feel like mush !? it didn’t make any sense for him !

   with a nice ring of a bell, they walked into the cafe, and the sweet scent of pastries filled the air, along with some coffee wafting along, and even some savory looking sandwiches. “ this place is like a restaurant and a cafe merged together. but i come here for more of the cafe part, but there’s still stuff you can order off the menu! and i’m paying, so please don’t worry about the prices! eat what you want!”

“It’s… anyone with a heart would do the same,” Zane argued softly. Sometimes he’d be flustered by such praise, but in his current mood, Zane didn’t know how to take most of this. He took a deep breath, running a hand through his long hair for a minute before pulling his ponytail into a looser bun as he listened.

“I’m sure it’s hard. I know it’s hard. I still run from responsibilities that I shouldn’t run from- or work myself to the bone trying to get them all done. You just… got to try your best. You’ll get better the more you face them.

“I’m… glad to hear that in the very least. Caffeine withdrawal is, indeed, a terrifying thing, and must be avoided at all costs. I’m pretty sure I live on caffeine at this point.” For the first time in the conversation, there was the soft hint of a smile at the edges of Zane’s lips. “Black coffee is the best- I hope the void tastes like black coffee.”

   “ anyone with a heart, huh? ” her heart ached just for a moment, a moment she spared herself to feel it, before she shrugged it off and composed her feelings once more. ah, really . . she would never be so open with a stranger, and it would never be so easy for her to relate to someone else. but she was here. what could she do?

“ that’s what we gotta keep telling each other. so we keep going, right? ” she offered a kind hand on his shoulder. “ we’ll all get through this with big problems or not.”

  “  the void? oh, no, the void would probably taste like a whole jug full of espresso. black coffee enough wouldn’t be able to compare with the void ! we should know better than that. ”  she jested with him, her own lips forming a tiny smile.

  “ it’s not naaaatural! it’s better just to get it from the source ! all you gotta do is sit outside with me !”  he let out a bound of joyous laughter, so cheerful it draws his own little aura around him. “ we’re gonna go get some food at my favorite cafe ! it’s full of french delicacies and stuff and i’m sure you’d enjoy some ! it’s super good, french food is my favorite !” he snuck an arm around his own, just to hold onto for safe keeping ! ! “ ..i hope you find it good too..because i have no where else in mind..and i’m really craving.”  he mumbled, slightly turning away, starting to ponder the ‘what if he doesn’t like it here’ scenario in his head.

“I’m sorry that you’ve gone through all of this, but… if it gives you any consolation, life is hard, but you’ll get through it. The longer you run from your responsibilities, though, the harder it’s going to get to make up for the damage from it.” Zane tugged on the edges of his hoodie sleeves, taking a deep breath. “I’m… sorry. I have no idea what it’s like going through what you’re going through, but I can at least tell you that if you’re at the very bottom, at least the only way to go is up.”

    “ what a good hardworking brother. . ”  a gasp of amazement slipped from her lips as she hovered her hand over her mouth. of course, she never knew the feeling for as far as she knew, she was an only child and regardless, she didn’t have anyone like that..

The waitress took their orders, looking curiously over at the both of them as though she expected Kevin to say something, but of course he didn’t. He kept his appearances at the diner mysterious (to the amused frustration of the staff), and intended to keep it that way.

“Absolutely nothing gave me that impression.” he admitted, raising one of his eyebrows slightly. Did this kid really have no idea of how pure he was? Well–of course he didn’t–that was probably part of why he was so good in the first place. If he hadn’t been before, he was now on Kevin’s official List of Protection, which held few other occupants.

“Anyway, I’m going to the bathroom. Don’t run off.” he said, scooting out of the booth and walking towards the restrooms, out of the view of the other. And he was going to the bathroom, but first he was going to stop the waitress to make a correction to the youngling’s order.

    “ ah.. is that so?”           well, he couldn’t be surprised about that. he was always told he had a gentle looking face and the aura of a kitten. he couldn’t hurt a fly ! but he totally had the capability and strength to, but he didn’t very much care for violence. in honesty, he hated to think aobut it.

  “ i won’t move an inch, i promise !”  he nodded and watched him go off until he couldn’t see him anymore. but as soon as he was left alone, he attracted the attention of some ladies inside the diner. even those who had come with company were giving him an eyeful.. and some had waved, gave him those flirtatious looks.  he was surrounded.

“It is. I’m…” The mention of parents had him more stiff, averting his eyes away from the other. Shit, he’s exhausted, he hasn’t had coffee in hours- he didn’t have a filter. “I ran away from mine, with my little sister. The best decision I made, but I sometimes wish they’d just killed me so I didn’t have to deal with the stress of life anymore.”

“ ..well, if it was the best decision, it was good for you and her. so it’s good.” she puts her hands under her chin and rocks her head from side to side on her knuckles.   

       “ ...i don’t have any adults to take care of me anymore. i’m just alone. and i mean, maybe it’s easier that way? as a child i had a hard time remembering stuff, but there was a reason why i was on the streets. and then an old lady picked me up and i’d run away from her every time she would call me to do a chore.”  she laughed, almost so bitterly as if her heart would just turn black. “ but now she’s gone too, so i can’t run from her, but i guess this time i’m just running from my responsibilities. but it’s hard trying to deal with your responsibilities. i get it.”
