@simone-boccanegra she is indeed right but unfortunately I have that thing that some people have with sarastro: an automatic love for (bass-) baritones and so watching the ring is a brain half going WTF WOTAN AND ALBERICH ARE BOTH SCROUNDRELS and the other half is just like….but :( and so I’ve come to the conclusion that loving characters and acknowledging their scoundrel tendencies is the best approach

yeah :D their music is so good! also Eric Owens really made me love Alberich, he’s just too handsome to dislike

interesting! for me it was tomasz konieczny who made them both. heard his alberich first and it was really intense and i wondered how tf does he sing wotan if he’s capable of sounding this villainous but turns out he makes for a really magnetic and varied wotan that can actually make me cry, so bonus points for that i’ll say...

watched pelleas et melisande yesterday night on my laptop in the dark and that was a mistake because SHIT IT WAS CREEPY

I have read the plot of that multiple times and I still don’t know what the fuck is going on besides “Tristan but kinda in pastels and more mopey”

the music was cool and super atmospheric but the dialogue is so symbolic that you don’t know immediately what the characters mean, so at the end i felt like i saw something interesting but couldn’t definitively say what, and also it’s quite shocking because beside this poetic symbolic dialogue there’s the rather violent saddening plot that just absolute slaps you in the face especially if the acting is good. and the music definitely makes me scared of the dark although the end is magical

is this production good for a first? I’ve never seen a full Meistersinger. I heard some bits. It’s the only major Wagner I haven’t heard in full.

YESSSS FINALLY SOMEONE WHO THINKS HE’S A CUTIE TOO (and then he’s such a socially awkward potato)

for me it really depended on the production because I think I only do well with Meistersinger if I’m watching it, only listening somehow doesn’t work for me. I genuinely don’t think I would’ve liked meistersinger as much if this production hadn’t been my own first. Some paper called it grim and funny and heartbreaking and that’s 100% true. It addresses the fact that wagner and die meistersinger are historically seen quite *problematic* due to anti-semitism in a very head-on and sometimes drastic way. I was skeptical of meistersinger before because it’s in some ways wagner’s most explicitly political (and in no way friendly) opera, so for me addressing historical and political implications of “holy German art” felt good. Some people think its statements/theses aren’t concrete enough but I say it contains more of a general warning/observation or wants to make you think. (The first act is also a riot because it’s based on real people from Wagner’s life and takes place in his living room.)

and as you might tell from the photos, the sachs/beckmesser combo is utterly to die for and they’re really the heart of the production instead of the lovers being the main focus with beckmesser as the annoying side plot, so bonus points for the two baritone frenemies :)

Is this available with English subs? It sounds fun.

thus far the version that’s out on YouTube is complete but with German subtitles, alas...there’s also a DVD on Amazon but I can’t find the subtitle options, so if you want to watch it for free, you might have to read along with a line-by-line translated libretto, which is harder in the first act due to the amount of characters onstage and then probably gets easier. I’d say the meistersinger plot is quite apparent from the actions onstage, so maybe it’ll work. if I find a version with English subtitles I’ll let you know though :)
