Ilya Kaminsky, from "While the Child Sleeps, Sonya Undresses", Deaf Republic
“All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.”
— Mitch Albom

“What do you say when you’re not enough to make someone stay? What do you do when you meet the love of your life and realize it’s all about timing? How do you accept that no matter how perfect you are for each other, circumstances get in the way? How do you compete with that kind of fate?”
— Katie Kacvinsky, First Comes Love
zindagi se yahi gila hai mujhe tu bohot der se mila hai mujhe. humsafar chahiye, hujoom nahi ik musafir hi qaafilaa hai mujhe. tu mohabbat se koyi chaal toh chal haar jaane ka hausla hai mujhe.
"Oh, when Ahmed Faraz said:
"Sab kuch milta hai is duniya mein,
Faraz, bas woh nahi milta jisse
mohabbat ho."
But Jaun had the guts to quote:
"Zindagi kam pad gayi, warna
woh na milta, majaal uski."
I screamed a little when Allama Iqbal said:
"Na kar naseeb pe itne gile, Iqbal,
jab Khuda razi hota hai, toh har
cheez mil jaati hai."
But then, Mirza Ghalib got a chokehold on me, saying:
"Tum bhi Ghalib, kamaal karte ho,
ummeedein insaano se laga kar,
shikayatein Khuda se karte ho."
I have two sides :
1: kyun na us kam numa ko chand kahun? chand ko dekh kar jo yaad aye!
2: wo sitara thi ki shabnam thi ki phul, ek surat thi ajab yaad nahin!
— Nasir Kazmi
when Mahmoud Darvish wrote,
"Do not be absent for too long then come and ask about how I am, details die with time and stories change."
and when jaun elia wrote,
"aap ab puchne ko aaye hain, dil meri jaan marr gya kab ka."
na namaz aati hai mujh ko na wazu aata hai sajda kar leta hun jab samne tu aata hai
میں دل پہ جبر کروں گا تجھے بھلا دوں گا
مروں گا خود بھی تجھے بھی کڑی سزا دوں گا
main dil pe jabr karunga tujhe bhula dunga
marunga khud bhi tujhe bhi kadi saza dunga
ye tergi mere ghar ka he kyuun muqaddar ho
main tere shahr ke saare diye bujha dunga
hava ka haath bataunga har tabahi mein
hare shajar se parinde main khud udaa dunga
wafa karunga kisi sogvar chehre se
purani qabr pe katba naya saja dunga
- Mohsin Naqvi
"ab to uss raah se wo shaqs guzarta bhi nahi,
When Ahmed Faraz wrote:
sunā hai rabt hai us ko ḳharāb-hāloñ se so apne aap ko barbād kar ke dekhte haiñ
(I heard, she’s empathetic to those down on their luck.
If so, let’s ruin ourselves to such a state, to see.)
I wish we were pressed flowers on the same page.
-Unknown
Ab ke ham bichhde to shayad kabhi khvabo me mile
jis tarah sukhe hue phuul kitabo me mile.
-Ahmed Faraz

mirza ghalib:
“sharab peene de masjid mein baith kar ya woh jaga bata jahan khuda nahi”
allama iqbal: “masjid khuda ka ghar hai peene ki jaga nahi kafir ke dil mein jaa wahan khuda nahi”
ahmed faraz: “kafir ke dil se aaya hu main ye dekh kar khuda maujood hai wahan par usay hi pata nahi”
wasi shah: “khuda to maujood duniya mein har jaga hai tu jannat mein jaa wahan peena mana nahi”
saqi: “peeta hu main gham-e-dunya bhulanay ke liye jannat mein kaunsa gham isliye wahan peene ka maza nahi”
Ghalib
Sharab pine de masjid me baith kar,
Ya woh jagah bata jaha khuda nahi.
Translation:
Allow me drink in the mosque,
Or show me such place where God does not exist
Iqbal
Masjid khuda ka ghar hain, peene ki jagah nahi,
Kafir ke dil me ja wahaan khuda nahi.
Translation:
Mosque is a place for worship, not a place to drink,
Find a heart of a kafir, God doesn’t reside there.
(In Islam Kafir refers to a person who rejects God )
Faraz
Kafir ke dil se aaya hu main ye dekh kar,
Khuda maujood hai waha par use pata nahi.
Translation:
I have looked into the heart of a Kafir,
God does reside there but the Kafir is unaware.
Wasi
Khuda toh maujood duniya me har jagah hai,
Tu jannat mein jaa waha peena mana nahi.
Translation:
God is omniscient in this world.
You try heaven, where drinking is not forbidden.
Saqi
Pita hoon gham-e-duniya bhulane ke liye,
Jannat mein kaunsa gham hai isliye waha peene mein mazaa nahin.
Translation:
I drink to forget the pain of this World.
What sort of pain does heaven have, I find no joy in drinking there.
Meer
Hum peete hain maze ke liye bewajah badnaam gham hain
Puri bottal pikar dekho duniya kya jannat se kam hain
Translation
I (we) drink for pleasure , but pain gets the blame for no reason
Drink a whole bottle, does the World seem any less than heaven?
