Helen’s beauty was a pretext for war, and now Lupita gets the same treatment in a modern culture war. They swear her face couldn’t launch a thousand ships, yet look how long they’ve been fighting over her casting. Different era, same urge to turn one person into a symbol for everybody’s agenda.
The irony is that Helen herself is fictional, she was even born from an egg…
The surviving statues everyone points to have long since lost their colour, leaving behind the misleading impression that antiquity imagined itself in white marble. And in the earliest surviving literary portrait, Homer (c. 8th century BC) barely describes Helen’s face at all. Instead, he relies on formulaic epithets such as “white-armed” and “lovely-haired”, conventional poetic markers of beauty and noble status rather than detailed physical description. Her face is left deliberately to the imagination.
