Just wanted to say I absolutely love all your art, from your sketches to your fully rendered work.
I was wondering if you have any tips or advice as an artist on line quality. Your sketches always have mark making that reads as being very confident, and I was curious if there's anything you did in particular to improve at this. Thank you if you decide to respond to this ask!
Thanks! Hmm... I'm always a bit unsure when it comes to doling out art advice because it can be such a personal thing, but at the same time I do believe there's a baseline in which all artists have to start from. Ah well, here goes-
The most helpful but least helpful-SOUNDING advice is just... mileage. You have to draw a lot. And make lots and lots of shitty shitty art with chicken scratch linework. Most people don't want to hear this, they want that magic bullet solution with the right tools/brushes or tutorials or what have you, but you cannot skip the amount of iteration you have to do if you wanna git gud.
I'm being honest when I say this: I didn't do anything in particular to improve my linework, I just tried to improve my art as a whole. Learn your fundamentals (perspective, anatomy, values, color, etc.) because they will make you more confident with knowing where things go. Your linework will naturally improve when everything else improves because all of these subjects are interconnected and feed off each other. You build up the muscle memory, the hand eye coordination, develop your instincts on how you use your tools through this process, and all these things can only be learned through experience.
You also wanna know a secret? Half the time when I start a piece I don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going with it because I've never done it before, but that's the fun part- seeing where it eventually leads to. I fall flat on my face most of the time but what's important is that I👏keep👏fucking👏doing👏it👏
