12 year old percy being an absolute savage is my favorite thing ever. i mean just look at him go. found out he was a demigod last week and he's already cussing out Zeus. became a national fugitive around 2 hours into his first quest, blew up a bus and a national monument a day later. improvised water magic with zero tutoring. just randomly defied the laws of magic by escaping the Lotus Casino in record time. found out he could breathe underwater completely on accident. Bribed literal Charon into letting him into the Underworld illegally by stacking drachmas on his counter true new yorker style. mailed medusa's decapitated head to the gods in a show of spite, and when they mailed it back in a "let's just pat the aggressive child on the head" kind of action it took him a grand total of 5 seconds to immediately go "omg i can finally MURDER my fucking STEPDAD!!!! :D". absolute lunatic that child was, we love him

Charybdis isn't "Hungry"; she is a Devouring Liturgy. 🌊🧎‍♂️

In The Sea of Monsters, Charybdis is defined by her schedule: she drinks the sea three times a day and spits it back out. It’s treated like a natural hazard, a "tide on steroids." But if you look at the Ancient Rituals of the Greeks, three times a day is the exact frequency of Libations and Prayers offered to the Gods (morning, noon, and night).

The Meta: Worship is the act of "giving" to the Gods—pouring wine, burning meat, sending smoke upward. Charybdis performs a Grovelling Inversion. Instead of sending life up to Olympus, she sucks the "Gifts" of the world down into the throat of the earth. She is a Black Hole for Faith.

The Inversion of the Sacred:

The Libation: A priest pours wine onto the earth for a God to "drink."

The Void: Charybdis "drinks" entire oceans, fleets, and heroes, but she offers them to Nothing.

The Gods are terrified because Charybdis is a "Broken Mirror." She reminds them that their "Taxes" (prayers) are just as destructive as a monster’s gullet. Both require a constant sacrifice of mortal effort just to keep the "System" moving.

Percy Jackson realized that the "Gods" and the "Monsters" are just two sides of the same hungry coin. One asks for your "Soul" through a temple, and the other asks for your "Body" through a whirlpool. By clinging to the fig tree over the abyss, Percy proved that a Hero’s job isn't to "Feed the System"—it’s to stay out of the mouth of the "Divine Consumer" altogether. 🔱🤐

the way the writers are setting up the complexity between annabeth-luke-percy is so incredibly well done and its THANKS to the changes they've made. fight me on that. yes, annabeth saw luke stab the tree when in the books she refused to believe luke was completely unredeemable (mostly out of blind faith), but in the show, she refuses to believe that because luke SHOWS UP for her. he saves her. he confides their plans in her. he loves thalia just as much as annabeth does. in the show, you understand why annabeth wants to believe, why she's stubborn every time percy wants luke gone.

luke cares for annabeth as a brother in the show. he was her protector, she trusted him more than anyone. so when this little son of poseidon comes in and suddenly makes annabeth LIE to luke's face, their rivalry becomes personal. this isn't about the gods vs. titans. this is about luke's family being snatched away by a newbie, who (in his eyes) has done nothing to deserve annabeth's trust. luke wants percy gone because he's getting in the way of his family being reunited under what luke believes to be a fairer world.

the show is doing a really great job with annabeth's depth as a character. if you refuse to acknowledge that, i suggest rereading the books. just because it's different doesn't mean they're not heading towards the same direction, and sometimes, changes are for the best.
