Love for Horses

THE WHISPERERS

A million years or more,

before Man came on the scene,

there existed an angel of the plains,

a ruler, an everlasting friend in need,

grazing on the vast land and empty plains,

living by voices, in and around

their expanse of peaceful habitat.

These gallopers first came to know Man

as the hunted would know the hunters.

For they were hunted,

killed by Man for their meat.

As fear struck in their throbbing hearts

in such troubled times, their alliance

with Man would always remain fragile.

In a Neolithic moment, 12,000 years ago,

when farming was first developed as an integral

part of Man’s progress,

Fate decided to intervene,

to help initiate a bond

between horses and Man,

though not quite as fast or easy

as one may think.

It took a long time, years after years,

through many centuries,

before Man saw and appreciated

the beauty, gracefulness, charms,

and the survival instinct in the horses,

and learned, by experience,

both instinctual and inspirational,

to tame, and to finally recognize

the horses’ innate intelligence.

They could see a common entity

between themselves, Man and Animal,

so deeply as to share their mutual secrets,

whispered softly into troubled ears.

These are men, living by voices

only they could hear,

who peek humanly, gently and patiently,

into the souls and hearts of the horses,

so as to soothe and heal

the ancient wounds.

These men are known as

The Whisperers.
