functionally suicidal character saying “I would die for you” to their significant other and its like. I get the sentiment, honey, but if a hot dog vendor told me he’d sell hot dogs for me, I wouldn’t feel very moved now would I
i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while
I love the idea of Shen Yuan wrongly interpreting the original goods Shen Qingqiu's appearance and replicating it wrong.
He wore eyeliner around his eyes -> Shen Yuan wears it on his lower eyelids, it opens his eyes a little more and makes him look kinder, but the original goods wore it on his upper eyelids for a sharper, meaner look;
His hair is neatly tied back -> Shen Yuan has bangs, but the original goods didn't let a single hair strand escape to his forehead;
He has an aloof and cold exterior -> Shen Yuan expresses very little emotion, but the original goods actually scowled and frowned a lot, cold was what people felt whenever he looked at them.
We have canonical confirmation that Shen Jiu pretended to read most of the time while not actually reading (going so far as to not even realize a book was upside down), so I think it would also be funny if Shen Yuan started talking to people about Qing Jing Peak's books and everyone kind of looked at him, because since when does he do that?
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
world trigger in the harry potter setting runs into one minor issue in that what the fuck is osamu's house supposed to be.
obviously you first think he's a gryffindor kinda guy because his main motivation is literally to help people. it's why he joined border, and it's why he's willing to butt heads against people that severely outrank or outmatch him if it means that he's doing the right thing. that boy is nEVER leaving border's goddamn buildings because that's literally how he is. just moral code + stubbornness = mikumo osamu i don't make the rules
thing is, his whole "bend the rules if they don't suit my goals" thing is also something that could land him in slytherin or ravenclaw. osamu's not a good boy protagonist: he has the biggest audacity level out of all the wt characters ISTG. if there was an audacity stat in the BBF osamu would top the charts EASY. he's also fairly intelligent, so there's that too (exhibit no 1: b-rank wars arc / exhibit no 2: away mission selection exam testing phase).
i think just about the only thing you could say for certain is that osamu's not a hufflepuff....... and i'm pretty sure someone's gonna prove me wrong too.
He actually is a Hufflepuff, they do not give a fuck, look fairly normal but they surprise you, and basically whoever doesn't enter the other houses goes there, so if he fits in all of them, he should also be there
My friend made a great point in favour of Hufflepuff Osamu
"Osamu must be saved without revealing I'm a neighbor!" What is it about Osamu that inspires this kind of single minded determination to keep him alive at all costs. Like Yuma, Jin. Kind of all of Border once Osamu wears them down.
Is it like a Gandalf towards hobbits kind of effect going on, but like everyone's Gandalf and poor Osamu is hacking his lungs out after running a mile
Motherfucker is cashing in favors from A ranks WITHOUT PAYBACK like they rlly are giving him advice for free even tho he's been very vocal abt wanting to be A rank
