Open Channel: All Survivors
Agent Lincoln: I'm with Agent Nashville, and we're about to retrieve Pegasus and Libby. We'll be at your location ASAP. Did you manage to salvage any medical supplies?
Orion: Of course. I assume the humans will require them. My internal scanners are not operating at full capacity, however I am eighty-seven percent certain there is some sort of stone structure to the south.
Open Channel: All Survivors
Orion: Attention all survivors. My scans of the area show that the wreckage is becoming increasingly unstable. In addition, there are unknown life forms in the forest. If you are able to walk, gather to the flare I am sending off.
Orion: Please respond.
Letting Go || Charleston & Peter & Orion
Agent Charleston?
The hint of a voice broke through the darkness. It was vague and blurry, and Charleston didn’t recognize it at first, but it was just enough for his eyes to twitch open.
"P-p-peter?"
Charleston attempted to maneuver himself so that he could look up at Peter a little better, blinking at the too-bright light that seemed to be everywhere. A surge of pain ran through his arm, bringing the agent back to the environment at least for a moment. He hissed weakly at the burning, moaning slightly as he collapsed back on the ground again.
"F-f-feel…I d-don’t…where are w-we?"
Fighting to stay awake, he squeezed his eyes shut tight in an effort to keep a hold on himself and his consciousness. He wanted to sleep, but Peter was here. He had to stay awake for Peter and Orion.
"It h-h-hurts, pl - " His scant thoughts were interrupted by a wave of sudden, unbearable nausea. Charleston’s body moved involuntarily as he curled in on himself and threw up what remained in his stomach. The action brought his arm between him and the ground, sending waves of pain that he could do nothing to stop.
It was horrible and painful and Charleston half wanted them to leave him behind because he felt half-dead, but the only thing he had enough willpower to do was to stay awake, tears rolling down his cheeks that he couldn’t feel or wipe away.
This was not an ideal situation. It was clear that if any humans had survived, their injuries would be severe. Perhaps some of the escape pods had created a better landing, but Orion did not believe that the odds were in their favor.
So as Peter had searched for survivors, Orion had filled a bag with supplies. Things that he would need. There were parts and tools for his brethren, medkits for the humans. It would not be enough; Orion estimated that even if only five percent of the humans had survived and none of them had life-threatening injuries, what he managed to gather would only last three weeks.
They would need to find an alternative.
For now, however, Orion was satisfied that he had enough to manage. Perhaps if more humans were dead, the supplies would last longer.
When they came across Charleston, Orion felt a moment of...
Concern.
Kneeling gracefully next to Charleston, Orion scanned him quickly, diagnosis and treatments filtering through his system.
"You have a concussion, your arm is broken, and I see several minor cuts and bruises. We need to treat you immediately." Orion looked up at Pisces. "Hand me a medkit. I will require your assistance."
He paused a moment before reaching out, gently laying his hand on Charleston's cheek. "Look at me," he said, very quietly. "You are going to survive. I will ensure it. First Pisces is going to give you an injection for the pain."
[Equinox Crew] Crashed and Burning
Peter was not entirely sure how he would feel if they were the only two left alive.
He was at least grateful that it was Orion. But there were people that he would … grieve, as foreign as the emotion felt to him right now. Agents and A.I. that he liked, that he had fought alongside, that he had spent time with and had grown close to. Perhaps not as close as he had felt to Agent Boston, but still close.
Friends, he would call them. That word was appropriate.
And he did not want to leave and possibly abandon them. Even if there was nothing other than their bodies, did not want to just walk away as if they were nothing.
The weight of Orion’s hand, at least, was reassuring. Because Peter honestly did not know how much more death he could take. First Boston, along with Sacramento and Scorpio. Gemini and Acadia. Then Atlanta and Annapolis, not dead, but as good as. And—
Boston’s dog tags.
They would be on his former body.
"We have to go to the hangar." Was Orion not distressed at the thought of his own Agent possibly being deceased? He seemed calm, and Orion had never been one to really hide his emotions, though Peter had no doubt that he could do so, if he chose. "I— there is something there I must retrieve. And perhaps on the way we may find more survivors."
Was it weak of him, to contemplate asking Orion to lead him, so that Peter would not have to look? He did not want to see bodies.
Helena was gone.
Orion knew that. It was a calm understanding, a grief that had no bottom for the sorrow to pool against. It simply was. Helena was dead. As her sister had been, as she had railed against, now she was also. Death had found her.
Orion...wished it was not the case. But dwelling on the fact would not change it. As he had told her once, the fact that death existed did not make the life lived before any less valuable.
"We need to find a port or some center of civilization," Orion pointed out. But he turned and walked down the steep slant of the storage deck as Pisces had requested. "We cannot stay near the ship for long. It is unstable."
As if to agree with him, the ship shuddered under their feet. Orion gripped Pisces' hand tighter and drew him with him as they walked, faster now.
"We should gather supplies. If any of the humans survived I have no doubt they will be injured. Mechanoids as well; if my bearings are correct, the Restoration Bay is no longer attached to this portion of the ship, but we may find useful objects elsewhere."
[Equinox Crew] Crashed and Burning
Though Peter was supposed to be able to adapt to any situation, to any fate, he had found himself frozen.
Standing at the tear in the Equinox, looking down on what appeared to be a forest, he had not wanted to look back into the ship. He had not wanted to be confronted with the knowledge of which A.I. were alive, and which were dead. The thought of seeing their shells was too much for him.
So he had frozen, unable to face the truth. Peter was aware that he would have to find out eventually, he could not simply stay here for the rest of his natural life. But it was tempting. It would be easier than knowing.
Orion’s voice shattered the silence, and Peter would have liked to say that he was relieved, but he could not feel anything right now, as if his emotions were clouded over so thickly that he could only get the barest glimpse of them. But there was relief. Of everybody on this ship, Peter considered Orion to be … valuable.
That was not the best word for it. But it was the only one he had right now.
"I do not know if any of the Agents survived. Or any of the other A.I." Even his voice was numb, bland. "There is every possibility that we are the only two left."
It was a simple matter, to reach out his hand, to take Pisces'. To intertwine their fingers, to move closer, as if that proximity made all else inconsequential.
Perhaps it was.
"I do not consider that to be the worst case scenario," Orion replied, turning his head to study Pisces. "Though it appears you might."
Already Orion was thinking through the next steps. They would need to acertain exactly where they were on the planet. Survival was not nearly as complex with only mechanisms to worry about - part of him hoped that no humans had made it through, as they were far too fragile and hard to care for. They would need shelter from the elements, as, if his calculations were correct, the restoration bay was not among this wreckage. Repairs would be difficult.
"Come." He squeezed Pisces' hand. "This is not our home any longer. We should explore."
[Equinox Crew] Crashed and Burning
The silence was perhaps the most unnerving thing to Peter.
While others had gotten to the escape pods, Peter had not. He had not known if his consciousness would transfer to one of the spare forms that the Equinox held in storage, but he got his answer when he opened his eyes and found that he was indeed still alive. He remembered his corporeal form being destroyed—the hangar had crumpled upon impact—and the feeling had been … disconcerting.
The storage he had woken up in was right at the tear in the ship; the far wall was gone, replaced with a chasm of blackened metal and blue sky beyond that.
Agent Nashville?
No answer. The implant link was still offline.
And he was surrounded by the very still spare bodies of his brothers and sisters.
Scrambling upright, Peter cautiously made his way to the very edge of the tear in the ship, standing on the precipice. He could not hear anything. No voices. Just the whistle of wind through the torn ship.
He had seen some of the Agents get to escape pods. But he had no way of knowing if they had survived or not. And what of the A.I.? What of the Director?
There was a feeling that Peter distinctly recalled feeling at several moments in his life—the cold, burrowing sensation of dread, but a strangely numb one. Shock, then. A very human feeling, he had been told.
"Hello?"
He surely could not be the only survivor.
It had ended.
Not with a whimper but with a bang, with screaming metal and fire. Orion had assumed that the human race would simply implode, as they had in every generation. But no, this microcosm of humanity had gone a far more violent route.
Orion's body had burned. For the second time he had been consumed by fire. This time, however, he hadn't been able to find refuge in Helena's mind. This time, he had been tethered to his corporeal form even as it melted around him.
It was not an experience he ever planned on repeating.
And now Orion was standing in the crushed remains of the mighty Equinox, surrounded by the bodies of his brother and sisters. Some would never awake.
The humans had done this. Their hubris, their arrogance and insistence on pursuing this war, they had destroyed them all. And now this was the result. His kind had paid the price.
But they would rise. These were the ashes, and they were now free. No one was watching them. No one would tether them down.
"Pisces." Orion turned to him, relief hitting him far more strongly than he would have imagined. All the grief, all the worry... It turned out that much of it had been wrapped up only in Pisces' fate. "You are alive. That is... I am pleased."
