“Yeah…I don’t care.”
“That’s... rude.”

“Wow! That’s exciting. What do you do on Banana Lovers Day?”

“Oh yeah, that is just fascinating.” he commented with a small yawn.
“I know right? Dragons are just so cool. Did you know they’re supposed to be cousins to the Tyrannosaurus Rex?”

Three words. Three words are all it took for Matheson’s heart to explode inside his chest. He had died, he was sure of it. There was no way what he heard was real, that those words had actually come out of Adam’s mouth. You’re already there. The idea that even the thought of Matheson meant so much to Adam that they shared dreams together made his heart race in his chest. When Adam went on to say the platonic nature of said dreams, he felt a little deflated, however the fact he still thought of him when he was sleeping… it was a big deal. It made Matheson’s heart soar, and his mind was cluttered with his own collection of dreams he’d had about the pair. All romantic in nature of course, so Matheson wasn’t going to say a word, but he couldn’t help but beam at Adam. The way Adam’s eyes lit up when he talked about his dreams.. Matheson wanted nothing more than to hear about them.
The conversation continued and flowed until it came up about the pair being tired. It was undeniable, the sleep was evident in Adam’s eyes and Matheson could feel his eyes fluttering. But he didn’t want to sleep. Tonight was different to all the other nights he’d spent with Adam - now that he knew the truth. And even then, the proximity between them, the emotions Matheson felt in the air - he knew tonight was a big deal. And it was undoubtedly late. Well past midnight, he knew that for sure. But being tired seemed like a bad thing as he looked over at Adam. Even in sleep he remained the most beautiful person he’d ever seen, not to mention the way his hair had been messily swept off his face and the dull pink of his lips that screamed at Matheson to nestle in closer. It was almost too much, looking at Adam like that. He was beautiful, that’s all there was to it. The most beautiful person he’d ever seen. Hearing Adam telling Matheson what to do made his heart stop. Adam had said it in the most vulnerable, innocent way. And Matheson simply let his hand squeeze his in reciprocation. “I’m n-not going anywhere, Adam. I’m s-staying right here… w-with you.”
As Matheson finished his illustration and little message to Adam, he couldn’t help his heart that skipped a beat when Adam praised his work. He always did of course, Matheson had shown Adam some of his artworks, but there were still many that Matheson had insisted on keeping to himself. But moments like these… it made him want to reveal every little bit of his soul to Adam. Adam’s cheerful laugh made Matheson look up, and he let the melody fill his ears as Adam wrapped his arms around him. Matheson had to stifle a sigh as Adam did so, embarrassingly so. Matheson didn’t know how Adam felt about him, but there was something about the way he held him that night. He and Adam just seemed to slot together… like puzzle pieces. Like two parts of a whole. Matheson’s entire being was alive as Adam rested his head on Math’s shoulder. Both of Math’s arms moved around to encompass Adam fully, and one hand rested just above Adam’s heart, feeling his strong and sure heartbeat beneath. Matheson’s head pressed into Adam’s, and his entire world felt complete. All he could hear was his best friend’s shallow breathing, and the symphony his heart was making. The hand that hugged Adam close remained, and Matheson realised the hug was probably supposed to end. But Matheson had no plans to move. He was too happy like this, much too happy. Matheson could feel sleep creeping up towards him, but he fought to keep his eyes open. He looked down at the boy beneath him, and fought every instinct to lean down and kiss him on the forehead. “Hey Adam… I w-wanna hear them. I w-want to h-hear the stores about y-your dreams… the s-stories about us.” His voice was quiet and innocent, but Matheson wanted nothing more than to hear everything Adam had to say. So Adam began, and Matheosn kept his ears open. His eyes fluttered closed, and he imagined every little thing Adam said. But soon, he wasn’t imagining the dreams. He was finding his own. The beautiful composition of Adam’s voice was enough to make a gentle smile scrawl across Math’s face. Math’s hand gripped Adam’s shirt where his heart was a little harder, as it eventually happened. All the noise disappeared, and the world went dark. Math’s heart slowed, as Adam lulled him into sleep. And he was happy. Matheson was so happy in that moment, feeling the rhythm of Adam’s heartbreat as sleep finally took over. Although his grip on Adam and their position didn’t change a bit. But the last thing Matheson saw? Adam’s eyes. The eyes he knew he’d spend the rest of his life chasing, on one adventure or another. “L-love you, g-good night…” Matheson mumbled under his breath, as he went under and sleep took him away.
He nodded, letting go of the air he had been unknowingly holding in. He felt relief crash over him as Matheson agreed to stay with him. Adam found it incredibly interesting how safe he felt with Math’s hand in his. It was almost a foreign form of a satisfaction for him. He had felt feelings before, just never like this. Matheson had seemed to open up a whole new world of feelings for him. Or maybe something about him just magnified the feelings that he already had. He didn’t know what it was about Math that made him so special,, or maybe there was just too much to put a finger on. Whatever it was, he found it undeniably amazing. “Okay, thank you,” he felt himself blush, smiling shyly as his thumb rubbed the back of Math’s hand gently. “Thanks for not leaving.”
Lying there together, wrapped up in each others arms, it was all Adam could ever want. Matheson’s heartbeat worked as the harmony to the melody of his own heart, and as he told the stories he found himself staring lovingly at the boy. He loved the sound of music their hearts made. Adam went on and on about the adventures that took place in his second reality, a permanent smile on his face as he did so. He went on for a while, although he didn’t feel the seconds tick by as he became one with his stories. He went into detail with everything that he talked about, proving to have a very imaginative mind. Every now and then he would pause mid sentence to look at Math, whose eyes were already fluttered closed, Adam’s eyes holding more love than he could even fully take in. His voice softened as he noticed Math’s breathing began to slow into the lightest possible tempo; one that showed him that Matheson’s very own dream land was near. He spook in a lulled voice, soft and sweet, as he watched Math drift off into another world. He finished the story that he had been on, as if Math could somehow hear him beneath the weight of his slumber. After he had finished, all he could do was stare at the boy so close to his own face. He took in all of his beauty, hating that he couldn’t just lean in forward and kiss him now. He was so beautiful when he was sleeping. He was always beautiful. Adam’s mind flashed back to the moment on the ladder right before he had taken his tumble. It was Matheson’s eyes that he had been thinking about, and it was funny, because even now as he stared right at his eyelids he could still see them vividly. Matheson was like a favorite song; one that he had listened to over and over again, memorizing every lyric, ever pitch, and every rest. Adam didn’t need to hear the song to know he loved it, to know every second and every note in the song. He could close his eyes at any given moment of any day and sing it perfectly; he knew the song by heart. So, yes, Matheson was a song. The most beautiful song that he’d ever hear. Matheson was his favorite song. Adam wrapped his arm around Math’s side, leaning into him closer. He felt gravity tug at his eyelids, and for the first time today he didn’t fight it. He didn’t feel the need to fight it, he took comfort in the fact that in only a few seconds he would see Math again - smiling and laughing with him. ‘I love you too,” he barely whispered, as he gave into the grip that sleep had on him. And just as effortlessly as Adam had fallen for Math, he had fallen asleep.
I love you too.
He said it again, and this time not to the unconscious boy that had been lying in bed next to him, but the very conscious boy in his dream world. Adam had said a lot to Matheson about his dream world, but he had failed to mention a few very important details. There, in his other world, Matheson knew. Math knew that he loved him, and better yet he loved him back. In this other world they were together. They were happily in love. This was the very reason why Adam found himself in this world much more often than he used to. In this world Adam wasn’t afraid to take him by his hand, by his heart, and kiss him. In this world, he wasn’t afraid to tell him over and over again how much he loved him. In this world he wasn’t afraid. He was just in love. And maybe that’s why it was a dream world, but Adam chose to not overthink it. When he was there all that mattered was Matheson, and every second counted. He knew that he’d eventually have to wake up to a world where Matheson didn’t know, and he had to be okay with that. And he was, painfully so, but he was okay with it. For now. Because although a dream world with Math was beautiful, it wasn’t as good as the real thing. He wanted a reality. He needed a reality with Matheson Jarvis. And he wouldn’t give up on it until he got it.
mxthesonjxrvis:
Matheson had pretty much lost all capacity to think at this stage. Everything Adam was saying was causing his heart to beat a million miles a minute. However, Matheson couldn’t hide the love in his eyes as Adam propped out his pinky and promised to never do something like that again. It warmed his heart. “Whilst d-doing dangerous things, I agree it w-would be after that y-you’re here. Pinky p-promise. And m-maybe one d-day, you can t-take me to this little w-world of yours… it s-sounds beautiful.” Matheson took his pinky and wrapped it around Adam’s, giggling as they shook on it. It was official then. Matheson couldn’t stop the twist of his lips as he looked at Adam with such painful adoration, his heart was so full. “And if I ever d-did get to go to that w-world of yours.. m-make sure it’s a d-discounted airfare… I c-cant p-pay full price.”
Being snuggled up with Adam felt natural, it felt like Matheson had always belonged by Adam’s side and no place else. The way their eyes were tethered was something else - Matheson could fee something stirring in the pit of his stomach. He wanted to laugh, at how painfully obvious his love for Adam was. His eyes absorbed the curly haired boy in front of him, his lips were permanently upturned in a smile, and his eyes were so wide and full of wonder. Loving Adam seemed to be the easiest thing Matheson had ever done. Of course, until Adam started to talk about his perfect guy. Matheson felt the breathe hitch in his throat. As Adam talked, Matheson tried to evaluate his choices and measure them against himself. It was pathetic, he knew that, but he was so desperate for just the smallest hint of validation. His heart couldn’t help it - with Adam around, Matheson lost the ability to think rationally. “N-no crime for you? I d-don’t want crime either! Ha!” Matheson blurted out awkwardly, instantly regretting it. This conversation was so awkward. “But… y-yeah. Best f-friends. That’s all I’d ever n-need really… someone who is a l-lover and a best f-friend.” Matheson wanted to avert his gaze, look at the ceiling or count the stars outside the window. But Matheson couldn’t tear his eyes away. Adam was his stars, his moon, his entire galaxy - and all he’d ever need. Hearing Adam confess to being tired, Matheson looked solemnly at him. “Oh… w-well, if you want to s-sleep, just let me k-know… then I c-can leave you in peace.”
Matheson was riddled in insecurity as he waited for Adam’s response. He didn’t know why he was surprised when Adam said yes, but Matheson couldn’t hide the huge smile that burst onto his face when Adam called it an honour. Matheson felt giddy and his cheeks went red. Taking out the six coloured markers, really made for children, Matheson just shrugged at Adam’s question. “I g-guess you can w-watch. Just know sketches aren’t m-my normal domain, so it m-might look awful. And y-you can watch, you c-can do whatever you w-want. I d-don’t know what else y-you’d look at really.” Matheson gave Adam one final, small smile as he sadly let go of Adam’s good hand and headed for the markers. Matheson made sure the space he was going to take up wasn’t too large, because he knew Adam would have plenty of other people who’d want to sign his cast. However, Matheson’s drawing covered the part above Adam’s hand. And so, Matheson started to work. He bit his tongue in between his teeth and his eyes were narrowed in concentration. From time to time, Matheson’s hands brushed against Adam’s and he couldn’t help the bolt of electricity that he felt. The sketch was finally complete after about twenty minutes - two dragons with a castle in the background. One of the dragons had a distinctive sword instead of an arm, and the drawings were in fact quite cute. One was purple, and one was green. Matheson’s arms were now covered in marker as well, and Matheson quickly signed a cute message underneath the picture before turning to face Adam. “N-not my best. But s-something to r-remind you how strong you are, I g-guess. To c-cheer you up when you look at y-your cast.” Matheson looked sincerely into Adam’s eyes as he began to read the small message he left underneath his work -To my loveable, funniest (and clumsy) best friend. Get better soon, Adam xx ~ Matheson
“You’re already there.” He didn’t miss a beat after Matheson had asked him about the other world Adam had created for himself. He blushed, looking down awkwardly. “I, um, just mean that since you’re my best friend...” Adam let the sentence trail off, biting his lip nervously. He was so embarrassed. He’d basically just told Math that he daydreamed about him - which he did - but Math wasn’t supposed to know. “Like... sometimes when I’m bored I go to this world in my head - as you know - and often times you’re there,” Adam shrugged as if it were no big deal. His heart sure begged to differ. “We go on adventures and stuff,” he smiled, looking up to catch Math’s gaze. “Maybe I’ll tell you about it sometime. I mean... only if you want to hear,” he smiled shyly, being that it was a little out of his comfort zone to talk about this place. It was something very personal to Adam, it was his escape. Where he felt most at home. When he wasn’t with Matheson of course.
As the conversation shifted to best friends and lovers, Adam’s cheeks reddened. It was almost impossible for him to think of anything other than the fact that they were best friends. He wondered if Matheson somehow knew that he had the ability to make him feel this way. It felt like he did, because the things that Matheson were saying were too perfectly crafted. He was saying all the right things, with each word the bounce in his chest quickened - almost abnormally so. Butterflies were present as Adam’s eyes searched Math’s eyes. The universe that hid behind the breathtaking blue blanket of sky in Matheson’s eyes left Adam mystified. He was too perfect to be real. The only explanation for his existence would be that Matheson was actually a demi-god or something of the sort. Just as his thoughts began to spiral to stories of greek mythology, Math spoke up again - breaking Adam from his daze. “Hmm?” He asked, shaking his head as he broke the surface of reality. “Oh - right - uh, no I’m not that tired,” Adam squeezed on to Math’s hand, “don’t go.”
Adam scoffed lightly, ‘Please, Math, you could draw a toilet and somehow find a way to make it beautiful.” Adam grinned reassuringly. “I already love it.’ Adam shifted his body ever so slightly to the side so that he could get a perfect view of Matheson as hew drew on his arm. He smiled, giggling under his breath absentmindedly. The look of concentration that masked Math’s features was adorable. Adam found his eyes wandering to Math’s lips, the tongue in between them, and blushed. His heart jumped. Even when Matheson wasn’t say anything at all, he could make Adam feel a thousand things per second. He was gorgeous, and the way he got into even a sketch on his cast made him love him even more. After Math was finished, Adam sat up in his bed, bringing his cast to his lap to get a better view of the thing. Immediately, a large grin spread across Adam’s face. “Matheson!” Adam exclaimed, following a cheerful laugh. “This,” he shook his head in disbelief, “this is the best cast signature I’ve ever seen.” He looked back down to inspect each individual dragon more closely. “Huh, that’s sort of crazy. You got like all the little details and everything.” He smiled up at Math, his cheeks pink with excitement. “This is awesome. You’re awesome,” Adam said, before pulling Matheson into a hug. He rested his head in the crook of Math’s neck, and his smile softened. Adam had fallen in love with the most amazing person on the planet, he was sure of it. All he wanted was to stay in that moment forever.

Matheson still couldn’t believe that when he woke up this morning, that his entire world would change. This morning, he didn’t know. This morning, he wouldn’t have the thoughts he now had racing around his mind. It’s not like Matheson didn’t love Adam this morning - it had been clear that Matheson had been in love with Adam for some time now. But now that he knew it, he felt liberated. He felt free. And the fact he was now cuddled up with him, his heartbeat pumping in his ears, and the warmth of his body pressed to his clear on his mind, meant that even the most far-fetched dreams could come true. Now there was only one more thing Matheson could ever wish for. But he knew wishing wasn’t enough to make it happen. Matheson chuckled as Adam tried to explain how empty his world would be without ladders. “There are other w-ways to p-paint murals. A s-scaffolding maybe? A c-chair? I don’t k-know, ladders gave up on you, so I’m g-giving up on them.” Matheson would like to say he was kidding on the ladder front, but he really had gotten scared that day. Matheson smiled as Adam talked about his being distracted. One of Adam’s most beautiful qualities was his ability to get lost in that other world of his. He’d often day-dream, and while the two talked, Matheson had to remind Adam he was there. Matheson wanted nothing more than to one day see what was in that special world, to know what made Adam smile and see the world so beautifully. “J-just.. next time, b-be more careful when d-distracted.” The talk of forever burned in Matheson’s chest. Forever was such a loaded word, filled with so much hope. The fact that Adam reciprocated that word, in whatever context… it made Matheson’s mind spin. Our forever, he repeated in his mind. Ours.
It was weird to tell Adam what his perfect guy was. Partly because Adam was his perfect guy, but mostly because it made this feelings… real. Talking about love with Adam made his emotions not feel so distant and dream-like, it made them real. It made Matheson realise something could happen one day, that Matheson may one day be the perfect guy for Adam. Or, on the flip side.. it means Matheson could legitimately get his heart broken. “Who k-knows if I’ll f-find him…” Matheson whispered quietly, feeling Adam leaning against him. “I don’t t-think people need to d-deserve someone that’s good for t-them, though…. I f-feel like if they w-were meant to be, they w-would be equal to each other.” Matheson became very conscious of their entwined hands, and Matheson slowly bit his lip as he looked at their hands. “N-now I’m curious as to y-your philosophy on love, who y-your perfect guy is. But I t-think I s-should let you r-rest really, y-you must be exhausted…” Matheson confessed, looking up to Adam seriously. He gave him a small smile, a smile full of so much love. He scanned Adam’s eyes and hoped to see something there. See something that was in his own. Matheson couldn’t.
Matheson couldn’t help but grin as Adam childishly made comments about the food as Matheson insisted he helped him. It fell silent between the two of them. Matheson could feel his heart beating in his chest, and it was so loud he was afraid that even Adam could hear. The moment was serene, and it was simple. Matheson had the excuse to just look at Adam with all the love in the world without Adam knowing the difference. Matheson hoped his feelings weren’t portrayed in his eyes, as their eye contact continued. The silence enveloped them for a little while, until they’d finally finished eating. Matheson managed to have a bit for himself, but as a whole he wasn’t that hungry anymore. Adam’s eyes were heavy with sleep, and Matheson knew the second he was asleep is when he’d have to leave. Techniaclly, he shouldn’t be there now. Matheson never broke the rules. But he broke them for Adam. “H-hey Adam….” Matheson began somewhat sheepishly, feeling selfish for keeping Adam awake but also a little embarrassed about the request. “I, uh… w-well, I was just wondering… y-you know how you have a c-cast, and it’s g-green, but there’s nothing else b-but the green? I was, um… w-would I be able to s-sign it?” Matheson looked to Adam awkwardly, like he’d just asked his hand in marriage or something. (Something Matheson would probably dream about one day, really.) The markers were in Matheson’s lap, and Matheson hoped that Adam wouldn’t think he was weird for this. Matheson was red already, just waiting to hear Adam’s reply.
Adam couldn’t help but feel almost grateful for his lack of coordination and chronic daydreaming. These things got him in trouble more times than not - today proving that exact point - but something inside of him was almost glad he’d gotten hurt. It was unexpected, a little frightening even, but it was worth it. The more he thought about it, the more it blew his mind. One second he was living out just another ordinary day, in the blur of an ordinary week, and the next he had fallen - Math had been there to help him - and just like that his day, almost magically so, become extraordinary. Obviously, breaking his arm wasn’t something he did everyday, but it wasn’t that bit that made his day extraordinary - it was Matheson. The fact that he got to spend all day with his best friend - the guy who held the key to his heart - that was what made his day important. Every second that he spent with Matheson was important, those were the seconds that he lived for, and when he wasn’t living them out he was hoping for them - wishing for them. Today was just another gift from the universe, another day where he could just be with Matheson - nothing else mattered. Being so close to the person that he loved, that was so precious to Adam. These were one of those moments that he would remember, being cuddled up close with Math, so that at the ends of those ordinary days he could think back and remember how it feels be extraordinary. Matheson had a way of making him feel extraordinary, and the way it made his heart flip in his chest was unreal to him. He found Matheson’s eyes and grinned. “Alright, alright, I’m sorry for getting so lost in my own little world. Next time I’m doing something dangerous, like standing on a ladder, I’ll pay attention. Pinky promise?” Adam’s grin widened, extending a pinky out to Matheson.
He listened as Math spoke, his eyes resting on their entwined hands, a soft smile present on his features. He looked up to look at Math. ‘Meant to be,” he repeated, as if trying to understand the concept. “Do you mean like soul mates, or something?” He didn’t know about soul mates, but he couldn’t help but secretly hope that Math and him were meant to be, Adam thought about what Math had just asked him, realizing that he’d never really thought about what his “perfect guy” would be. “Um,” he started awkwardly. “I don’t really believe in the whole perfect guy thing, but I guess there are certain things I’m attracted to in a guy,” he said, a sheepish smile on his face. “I like someone who is kind, funny, selfless, passionate, hard working... you know, all of that good stuff. Someone who’s good company, I just want to be able to be myself with them, laugh or cry - everything in between. I just kind of want to be with the person that I would consider my sort of partner in crime, I guess. Except without the crime part,” Adam laughed. “I’m not one for illegal activities.” He studied Matheson’s face. For what? He wasn’t sure, a sign maybe? Adam swallowed dryly, “I... I mean it’s sort of like you said. I’d want to be with somebody who I consider my... my best friend too.” As nervous as he was, his eyes stayed glued to Math’s. He felt the risk of what he had just said dig into him, his heart quickening, his eyes scanning the others. He cleared his throat uncomfortably. “Uh, yeah. I’m a little tired, i guess,” Adam shrugged, a bit discouraged, before leaning back on to the pillow behind him.
After finishing their less than great hospital meal, Adam let his eyes flutter close - only to open them once more as Math began to suggest something. Adam chuckled, before nodding, a large smile on his face. “Yeah, sure,” he moved his arm out to where Matheson could get to it. “It would be an honor, thank you,” Adam giggled, excitement filling his belly. He was so incredibly excited to see Math’s work, he was a magnificent artist. “Do I get to watch?” Adam asked, curiosity getting the best of him. “Or do I have to wait until you’re done?”

It was sad - because literally all Matheson wanted to do was lurch forward and kiss him. That seed of doubt in his stomach grew darker and larger. “Christmas is w-weird, I guess… but h-hey, don’t say it like that. Any g-guy would be lucky to k-kiss you, even… m-me.
