How In-depth Product Knowledge Improves Sales
UCLA graduate and accomplished former NCAA football player Adam Searl is a sales account representative for the shipping company Uline. In his work, Adam Searl must demonstrate his knowledge of Uline’s catalog, which holds more than 34,000 products. Salespeople who develop a deep understanding of their product line can improve sales by confidently communicating the benefits of their merchandise. Sales team members can build upon their knowledge by completing professional development workshops, trying out the products first-hand, and reading product brochures and marketing materials. During a conversation, a skilled salesperson should be able to analyze the customer’s needs and convey why a specific product can address the customer's concerns. Since customers often make comparisons between similar products before they purchase one, salespeople should also have considerable industry knowledge in order to explain why their product is superior. In addition, salespeople can leverage their product knowledge to make tailored pitches for add-on products or services and notify customers of upgrades.
