elise had been paying no attention to the stranger sitting beside her, as she was much too distracted by the messages accumulating in her phone. she had been sitting on the park bench for a few minutes, arguing with some old friends over text, when the the woman happened to appear. elise, confused, ignored the lady who was drinking directly from a bottle in public. she assumed that the stranger was just drunk and distraught, but once elise realized she was speaking to her, and about something she deemed quite personal, elise decided to respond. “ look, you’re doing the best you can, those kids understand that. a foster home is better than no home at all, and it’s not like you can just adopt them yourself. most people want to have their own children instead of taking in ones that don’t have a family, and there’s nothing you can do to change that. ” elise paused, thinking hard about whether she should speak the words that were currently running through her mind. she didn’t normally feel comfortable revealing her past to strangers, but this woman seemed oddly trustworthy. “ heck, i had been in 23 different foster homes before some couple even considered adopting me. ...and guess what, they didn’t. it takes time, but everything happens for a reason. maybe they’ll get adopted, maybe they won’t, but at least they’re not starving and alone on the streets. ”
