Julia was confused about how much enthusiasm was even possible to muster about marriage, but she did not want to ruin those good spirits. “If you’ve that much eagerness, then you shouldn’t need to be nervous at all. Why even bother with apprehension?”

“Between us, my lady, don’t let the enthusiasm fool you. This is simply a mask of my inner turmoil. I’ve lost my good sense and can’t seem to find it. The idea of marriage always seemed like an exciting adventure, but here I am, losing my shit. The world is a wildly unpredictable place.”

It was usually easy to find Alaya when you were looking for her. Honestly, one just needed to search the kitchens or for the sunniest spot in the gardens. As it were, she’d arrived with Kevan to the North and immediately sought out her favorite mulled wine from the Stark kitchens. She was happily pouring herself a cup when such a Stark burst through the door with quite an exclamation. “It sounds as though you might need a seat before a drink,” she answered with a knowing grin. Pulling a stool up to the kitchen block, she ushered him over with an elegant wave. “Come, have a sit.” Moving the full cup before the seat, she took to pouring another for herself. “I’d say such joy calls for a toast.”

Addison stopped dead in his tracks, wondering who the blonde beauty was. “Oh.” He was completely caught off guard, expecting to see old Nan or Hattie, the head cook, bustling through the kitchens. Old servants who were essentially family, but instead he found himself confessing something to a true stranger. It didn’t bother Addison though, as much as he liked meeting new people. “Why, hello.” He approached the stool with caution, a smile creeping on his face. “Who are you?” She was like a light in the darkness of the grey kitchens, and a brightness surrounded her.

The idea of being trapped in a marriage seemed like a death sentence to the young knight who much preferred to be out on some adventure then trapped inside the walls of the castle. Even as a child he had run around causing mischief. Again, the looming nuptials for the other couldn’t help but pass a thought that he was glad it wasn’t him. Even his own elder brother was soon to be married and Kevan to have a new sister. Thoughts were broken by the nerves of the other and the words slipped from his mouth about his betrothed eating something. Again, a laugh escaped the young lion. He obviously didn’t think regrettably onto the words. The called out orders for drinks made, they were left in conversation and he offered a shake of his head, “No. The North is far too cold. Travel brings me this way.”

“Tell me of your travels, then, Ser.” Addison said with a smile. “Better yet, let’s play a game. Forgive me, your face looks familiar, but I can’t quite place it. Perhaps we’ve met before.” Although Addison had a strong memory, the haze of the previous drinks had left him a bit fuzzy. “I can tell by the blonde you’re a Southerner, and judging by that garb, you seem to be a highborn. Dare I say a knight?” He could spot a man of his order anywhere. “A Lannister, gone to travel. But what prompts a lion to wander into the cold?” He asked, guessing for the most part, hoping not to offend the lad.

“As are you.” If she hadn’t been set on remaining polite, she might have laughed in his face for his remarks. Helenys was not kind and rarely had any positive words, but she understood the delicate nature of political relationships. “I have been well enough, thank you,” she answered, her voice now lowered into a comfortable tone. She motions for a serving girl to bring cups and hopes the light touch of alcohol will ease the stiffness of their conversation. “Here, let’s sit and talk. You can tell me all about her over the ale.”

“That’s the thing,” he spoke lightly in lieu of the awkwardness, attempting for a spirit of comfort to rift between them. He didn’t see Lady Helenys as an enemy, their jagged connection simply due to tensions between their houses. Though Addison felt it was his responsibility to bring the tensions to a halt, not drag them out. He continued. “I’ve heard tales of her beauty, though we’ve never met.” The jittery excitement faded from his eyes as the nerves set in. Being a bachelor at thirty one in the North certainly made one more eccentric than most. “How’s that for a first meeting, my Lady?” he joked, accepting the wine with ease.

“It seems you have nothing to worry about, Prince Addison. I wish you and your betrothed good fortune,” she replied, but honestly could not care enough even if said woman fell to her death on the day of her nuptials. Of course, the disclosure of that information had no place in polite conversation. “If boldness is what it takes to solve our problem, the Prince may be as bold as he wishes to be, if he will allow me the same courtesy. I would very much like to understand why the sistermen fear an invasion from the North on our territory once again. Naturally, I assume these rumours might be as true as any idle speculation.”

“My Queen,” he began with a curt smile. “Surely we needn’t dispute over land when there is a disruption in my home territory. Rest assured, thanks to my father’s unwavering hand,” he wished he could say unwanted, “the men of the North will be as eager to fight as I am eager to send them to war while their women and children starve.” He spoke honestly, and tersely. If he felt there was a match to his wits in the kingdom, it was the Queen regnant. “Pardon my terseness, but my father isn’t to be so easily reasoned with. However, I believe we may come to a quick and painless agreement if the North is to be offered a bargain.”

He remembered the day his late wife was arranged to marry him, and his behavior was much the opposite of the Stark prince. He drink ale to forget her, rather than to calm nerves. “There is no need to be nervous, your grace.” The news of the princes betrothal to his late wife’s little sister made the blood boil in his veins. The family that was nothing but a disappointment in his dark eyes. “Manderly girls aren’t intimidating. They’re anything but. She’ll probably be the ball of nerves. With all the pressures of marrying a lovely prince.”

“Many thanks,” he said with a cordial nod. He was well familiar with Torrhen Karstark, and although the man grated his nerves, they needed to be on good terms for the sake of establishing the Northern peace that Addison so eagerly sought. He wondered to what extent their rouse would go, two grown men playing cat and mouse. He pondered on how fortuitous their games of diplomacy would truly turn out to be. “God rest your lovely wife. You were certainly a man of luck to find yourself with such a gem. How does Karhold fare, my Lord? Give me that Karstark candor I so deeply admire.” He half-joked, expecting nothing but the most sardonic response.

She eyed the man as he professed his excitement. The simple idea of marriage did not incite the same feelings in Helenys anymore. “Congratulations to you, Lord Stark. Your enthusiasm bodes well for the union already.” A reassuring smile brings sincerity to her statements, though she couldn’t care less about his happiness. “Drink to your content, and consider it an engagement gift.”

“You seem to be the only thus far that's had such positive words to say, my Lady.” He knew the exaggeration of his own statement. He simply felt it easier to fake it with the Karstarks these days than express true sincerity considering how substantial the tensions between their houses have been raised. “You are too kind.” Formalities, formalities. “I hope you have been faring well.” He meant that. Addison did wish the best for everyone, even those technically considered his family’s enemies. He didn't see them as such. He simply wished for peace.

Addison Stark. Everyone knew his name, but few understood who he really was. Addison had always been a kindly young thing, handsome, chivalrous and full of life. His days were spent with glances away from his readings, head in the clouds and ready for sparring practice. He was the oldest of the Stark siblings, and he knew he had to be tough since his youth. He was deemed to have the makings of a true knight, characterized not by snobbery, or a division between him and his people, but a love for them. He was a charismatic people person, ready to help if need be. One servant saw him helping a merchant struggling to lift a bale of feed, and it was Addison who got off his horse to help. It was Addison who would swing his siblings on his arms in the courtyards of Winterfell. Addison who defended a starving boy that was to be punished for stealing food. He was a knight, the people’s champion. Nothing deeply concerned his father more.

If there was to be order, how could he have a son that paid the rebellions any mind? They were Starks, they couldn’t focus on anything but sustaining their hand over the North. Addison sought more. He sought the people’s trust, and he wanted to make a difference. He had grown from a boy unable to sit still with a tongue just as quick and light as his foot, into a young politician; though his motives were as genuine as he himself. Could it be true – that his heart was too soft to rule, or was he connected in a way that his father could never be? Was his lack of understanding his father’s biggest shortcoming, or could the Stark crown carry a weight that was truly too heavy for Addison’s head to bear? Of course everyone knew his name, but it took something deeper to understand his story.

WINTER KING — Addison’s father worries that he’s too soft for their world, too caring and invested in the world around them to be a truly good ruler. Addison has a consistently tumultuous relationship with his father, and he wishes for understanding.

STARK SIBLINGS — Addison loves his brothers and sisters more than anything, and wants to do right by them. He looks to them for support, and keeps them extremely close.

Kevan wouldn’t lie to himself, there was a moment of ‘better you than me’ at the declaration. At that, he could be a little more enthusiastic about it. “There we go, the truth,” He laughed as he said it. The idea of marriage should be enough to shake anyone especially a betrothal to someone you hadn’t met. He reached out and gave the other a reassuring pat on the shoulder, “I’m sure she won’t eat you alive on your wedding night.” His very own, less than helpful, wry sense of humor. “Well, you drink to forget, but come the morning, I won’t be the one who told you so. You said ale, so my mind’s made up.”

Addison had mixed emotions. He was excited, as he was almost thirty one by this point, and ready to settle down, though the more the notion sunk in that he would be tied to a woman he didn’t know for life sunk in, the increasingly nervous he became. “Well, I hope she eats something.” As soon as the words came out of his mouth, he regretted them a little bit. “At least one of us has a made up mind.” He called for two pints before refocusing his attention to the man. “So. Come here often?”

And that excited exclamation was completely contrasting to the reaction his own brother had had when he was betrothed to a daughter of House Farman. The young knight looked at the Northern prince like he had absolutely lost his marbles. “Congratulations on the pending nuptials then.” He said with less then enthusiasm. An eyebrow quirked of the fair haired Lannister,”You’re asking me?” He shrugged let out a scoff. “I have no idea. But I won’t turn down the drink if you’re offering.”

Addison began to think the shock had just been settling in, then he saw the look on the face of the Lannister before him and he knew he had lost it. “Truthfully, man? I’m scared shitless.” He said with a nervous laugh. He had no idea how to manage a marriage to someone he’d never met, but he hoped for the best to come of it. “Let’s drink to forget, then. What’ll you have?”

He raised his cup, interested more in tactical relations than in the places his own religion, or any religion had ever taken him. “My apologies, your Highness,” Addison said with a respectful tone. “You’ll have to forgive my ignorance. It seems to pervade conversation more than I’d prefer, at times. To the Drowned God, who was so kind to drown for us. That must not have been enjoyable, but he did it all the same.”

Treat her as you would treat an equal and she will offer you her entire world in return.”

“Great words indeed, your Highness. I will be sure to apply them,” he nodded, finding this to be a suitable place to cut in with more pressing matters.” Perhaps we may speak on matters of diplomacy. I realize there is tension where there shouldn’t be, and I’d like to sort out some land disputes with you, if I may be so bold.”

“The lord certainly has not been married before, otherwise he would know that marriage as a whole does not warrant such eagerness.” The queen snorted, an undignified little sound that seemed out of place as it escaped her. “Nevertheless, I would say such feeling should be reserved for the festivities. This particular sort demands a certain amount of…fortitude.” Temperance too, she felt like saying, to withstand and resist the more violent urges you may feel towards the spouse.

“Perhaps it is the difference of our sexes that prompts such a statement, my Queen,” he said with an understanding tone. “I’m sure that my betrothed feels less excited than I. I can’t imagine being a woman in this world, not knowing to whom you will be intended to wed. It’s such a strange practice, isn’t it?” he posed. “You wouldn’t happen to have any words of wisdom, would you? I’d like to make her feel as welcome as possible in such an unwelcoming world.”
