armstrong, june.
june had no one to blame but herself for how hopeless she was with the spanish language - don’t even get her started on catalan - especially knowing that she’d had the entire summer to prepare. but the word for brownie was the same in english and spanish, and it had her hooked instantly; eyes shooting up to see who was offering. her smile was brilliant before she knew what was happening, taking one of the artfully decorated sweets from the table. “alright! i’m starving, how’d you know? muchas gracias,” she said, trying to save herself by tacking on that little bit of spanish. someday she’d remember to practice her spanish when she went out, she really would.
she’d already taken a bite out of the brownie and was reveling in the taste of the chocolate when she read the banner. “bible study?” she asked after having to think of the words for an embarrassingly long time (definitely not thinking it had something to do with the library, because that would be sad). it had her thinking back to her life in newcastle, where she was known as the religiously-rebellious daughter of two theology professors. “i haven’t cracked open a bible in… seven years, now? the oldies would be proud, but i think they’d also die of surprise.”
a smile tore through adelina’s lips as june took the bait. adelina mentally shook her head, no it wasn’t bait. “ ¡sí, por favor, toma uno! ” she was doing this out of kindness and the brownies worked as an ice breaker. “ this sun took some time getting used to and i’ve always found that food helped me combat the exhaustion. ese… y sangría. ” she gave a subtle wink.
“ yes! are you familiar with our lord? ” seeing june decipher the sign gave adelina hope. getting anyone to join her club had been a fruitful challenge. a whole school year had passed and she hadn’t had anything to show of it, adelina was hoping that in her second year her bible study club take flight. or at least she would become financially independent so she could stop bible-thumping. as june continued to speak, adelina’s grin wavered slightly but she it wouldn’t stop her. “ i don’t think killing them would too christian-like. but god’s arms are always open if you choose to return home. ” adelina’s eyes lingered on her brownies. damn, they did look good. a bite couldn’t hurt. grabbing a brownie and biting a chunk of out of it she turned to june. “ what has stopped you from continuing a journey with the big guy? ”
