When Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman was published earlier this year, readers learned that this much anticipated “second book” by Lee was actually a first draft of what would later become the beloved To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee radically revised this early version of the book on the advice of her editor, Tay Hohoff. That made us wonder: How much do editors shape the final book we read?
What Exactly Does An Editor Do? The Role Has Changed Over Time
Although this year hasn’t exactly been that great for me in a variety of different areas, I will say that my year here in the book community has been nothing short of wonderful. I have met so many incredible people, discovered countless new books, book blogs, and more, and have just had an overall fulfilling and exciting year. I restarted this blog from nothing at the beginning of the year and now have over 38,000 followers (o_O) I am still in shock at that number; I sincerely appreciate and cherish every single one of you! Thank you all for making this such a warm and welcoming year in the book community and for providing a place that I can always come to and feel at home no matter what may be occurring in my life. I love knowing that I always have a place to go where I can find humor, sincerity, joy, and awesome personalities and books to escape to!
