I’ve seen garden perennials with little tags on them saying that “unauthorized propagation” is not allowed by some kind of intellectual property law.  So plant downloading is actually a thing people are concerned about.  The thing is, many perennial plants should be divided every few years for their own health, and then hey, you now have two plants!

I *literally* got assaulted by the Proven Winners Illegal Plant Snitch at my old job at the greenhouse/nursery so not only is Plant Downloading something corporate whackadoodles are concerned about, it’s an extremely cool crime we all should go commit.  Just make sure to check what’s invasive in your area so you don’t go around causing an Ecological Issue, which is an extremely unsexy crime that I will personally come to your house and fill all your shoes with cooked, day-old spaghetti for.

I’m constantly thinking about how I would be as a professor teaching an undergrad course. Some recurring themes:

No required attendance or penalties for not being in class. If you’re in college you’re enough of an adult to figure out your own shit, and if you can pass my class without actually attending it, I’m not making it worth your while to be there.

that said, pop quizzes but they’re extra credit

i absolutely will not require peer-review of drafts of papers without having spent at least half a class period going over what constitutes a good peer review. For fucks sake

absolutely will not require drafts or outlines for papers im not here to enforce a specific writing process on people and I KNOW some people are writing the essay and then cobbling together an “outline” for it afterward

I know having lots of small low pressure assignments helps some people but for others it just turns the class into a stressful, sadistic circus of missed assignments and punishes people with adhd specifically so maybe have the option to collapse tiny quizzes into one longer quiz or something. in general just...options for how to earn credit instead of “you can’t hold 1000 tiny assignments in your head and keep forgetting about them? uhhh fuck you I guess”

basically i really want to optimize focus on things like actually being invested in the class and wanting to learn and have those be the main determinants of your grade, rather than like, how well my teaching style fits the way you specifically learn, or how organized you are

Also. I know that if I was teaching a class, I would prefer that people do the reading. but I also know that you can’t devise a discussion prompt or question or whatever that will successfully make students prove they did the reading. You think you can but you just cannot do it.

I made the dean’s list last semester and I honestly barely read any of the books I was assigned. I’ve gotten high A’s on papers about books I read less than half of. There will always be students who are just really, really good at bullshitting I’m sorry. If I assign you busy work to make sure you did the reading we both hate it and no one benefits
