Really really enjoy the first Jasmin. The one thing I love love love about it is that they don't overly explain anything. We see everyone especially Yeli plot and plan yet they don't have a long monologue about what, how, and why they do it. Yeli herself is such a very interesting character, she's the main character but not only is she such an unreliable narrator, she's also the main mystery in the drama. Through the drama these mysteries are starting to unravel not by a big revelation or once again, long monologue, but through random information we gather from the environment, response from people around her, and other scattered clues. They trust that the viewer is capable enough to understand what they're trying to say without force feeding it to us. It makes people involved in the story. It makes us pay attention and think about all that's happening to make sure we get all the information. 10/10 storytelling.

I just watched another drama and realized that more people die from banging their head against random pillar than falling off a cliff. The pillar is what the cliff wanted to be.

Ever wondered just how many characters (usually don't) die from falling off a cliff? Well, that's what this blog is for: a newly born archive of all those fictional cliff falls and their aftermaths. As with any proper archive, let's lay down some terms: What counts as a cliff?

Any very tall rock formation where a reasonable (realistic) expectation is that anyone falling off of it would die. The cliff has to be dry but can have a body of water underneath it (a wet cliff is called a waterfall). Ledges and islands are also disqualified, as are pits rip Hualian* and (anything you wouldn't call a cliff). *If this series has a cliff fall I'm not remembering, lmk What counts as a character? (Who is eligible?)

Any FICTIONAL character from any* commercial media (books, TV shows, animation, movies, comics, etc.; NOT Fanworks). This is an archive of commercial media. No Real Life Examples. Character must be Named (Main or Minor Characters only) *Media must be in a setting where characters are NOT Cliffed to avoid an onscreen death (this disqualifies most kid shows and a lot of Disney media because it will skew our results). The point of the archive is to chronicle the contrary expectation of cliff falls (usually not) being fatal. Can I submit a character? Yes please! Thinking about how, Xie Zheng's main reason to not get married before Changyu is because he doesn't want what happened to his mother to happen ever again because of him. He always thought what happened to his mother is because she was too weak, not strong enough to continue living without her husband. He believes he'll die in battle sooner than later, so he always knows that he should marry someone strong, someone who will keep being strong even after he's dead. Then here comes Fan Changyu, a freshly orphaned girl who has to suddenly bear the responsibility for her and her sister's lives by herself. Not only that, she also has to:

fight with her own family to keep her house

fight all kinds of rumors about her that are spread to the entire town

fight her ex-fiancé and all his people that are spreading said rumors, and even

fight assassins that want to kill her and her family.

And yet she grits her teeth, roll her sleeves and face it all head on. Her sky has collapse, yet she's still held strong, still laughs freely, still holds what her parents teach her wholeheartedly, and is still so kind in spite of it all. Wtf is he supposed to do??? How could he not fall in love? Xie Zheng literally has no chance.

And yet it is after meeting this girl who he knows can hold strong even after he dies that he can't bear to die. He can't bear to leave her.

I have this thing about suicidal people that finally found a reason to live.

I can look past any other change they make in drama except the matter of changyu's motivation.

Idk, I usually hate it when a woman based their entire reason for a man but this one is different. When I read it in the novel, I feel like wow she's so cool! Yes she's motivated by him, but at the core she do this for herself. She wants to be with him but since she feel like he's a world apart from her and believe their relationship won't work that way, she decided that the only way forward is to change. She's insecure about their position in society an decided to secure herself a better place: to be his equal. This is very important to me and Xie Zheng. It's a peak romance and they take that from me 😭😭😭

Don't get me wrong, I do love that she wants to protect people. She always wants to protect people. And she did come to that realization too in the novel. We can have both people, we can have everything.

I hate to be the one to issue a correction, but that post going around saying that Xie Zheng would ask if Fan Changyu would love him as a worm, it's just wrong.

Xie Zheng knows that Fan Changyu would love him as a Yan "Worm" Zheng, she would build him a whole worm habitat and butcher pigs to support him, that is not his problem.

He needs to know if Fan Changyu will still love him as a dragon. As one of the deadliest, most competent, and powerful people in the kingdom.

He pretended to be a worm for so so long so she would keep taking care of him.

He's half a moment of despair away from chopping off his arms and legs to turn back into a worm.

The worm thing is covered. Edit: it's a wyrm problem (people in my notes being funnier than me again)

I decide to start watching Winter Begonia. Because apparently when you hit rock bottom, free falling just feel like sitting yourself down in a picnic.

I had an idea for a whole essay on why Maomao is quicker to accept affection from Loulan/Shisui than from Jinshi and how that's a reflection of her being raised in the pleasure district by courtesans and thus viewing affection from women as a given and natural thing to receive and give but at the same time viewing affection between men and women as transactional and something men have to pay to get and women offer as a product but I prefer to just enjoy the doom yuri while it lasts instead

Something about Apothecary Diaries and the complexity of what it means to have a mother. Something about Maomao and her only memories of her mother being silence or a pain that has nothing to do with her but is reflected onto her anyway, and yet still engineering things so that Lakan, years later, would come to find and marry her. Something about all of the courtesans in the Verdigris House being like mother figures to Maomao, yet never paying attention to her when she cried. Something about Loulan doing everything in her power to not be a mother - taking drugs to avoid it, knowing that to have a child would be a selfish, cruel thing, even down to 'killing' the children who adore her. Something about Jinshi, and both of his mothers - the one who birthed him and the one who raised him. Anshi, and raising him to be mature and older than he should have had to be to be the opposite of his grandfather, the man who victimized her, and Ah-Duo, unable to be in his life because she chose to give him up. Something about mothers not being unconditional and uncomplicated; something about motherhood being absent, ugly, confined by circumstance or by past pain. Something about not wanting to be your mother; something about being too much like your mother. Something about how your mother haunts you regardless.
