Peter Saul (American, born August 16, 1934)

The exhibition, Peter Saul: From Pop to Punk at Venus Over Manhattan brings together a set of sixteen paintings and five large drawings that were created by the irreverent artist during the period of 1962 to 1973. All the work that is shown is from the collection of Mr. Saul’s longtime dealer, Allan Frumkin (1927-2002).

These works give a glimpse at a period when Saul endeavored to create an abstract expressionist version of the pop art that adopted the painterly style but rejected the existentialist themes that ran through the work. He chose instead to embolden his work with bright colors and strove to shock his audience by tackling controversial political and social subjects like the Vietnam war and civil rights with humor and his own form of pop art abstraction.

“Lacuna” Peter Daverington

Daverington’s works recall the ruins of a ubiquitously imaginary dynasty, in the realm of a museum display devoted to ancient art. In these works the artist removes fragments, lacuna, missing pieces that intuit a sense of loss, of incompletion, of the already happened. Both the sculptures and the paintings depict figures in three dimensional pictorial space and adhere to compositional formalism, yet each are in various states of decay, revealing the processes of their making and the materials from which they are forged, such as exposing raw canvas in the painting and the foam substrate under the plaster in the sculptures. Together these imaginings come to assemble an aesthetic aligned with Greek antiquity rooms, oscillating between artifact and artifice.

JON BURGERMAN PLAYS WITH JEFF KOONS PLAY-DOH SCULPTURE AT KOONS WHITNEY RETROSPECTIVE

This Instagram pic of a tiny little replica of the Koons Play-Doh sculpture housed in plexi, being held next to the Koons 10 foot tall aluminum sculpture ‘Play-Doh’ started it all.

I dug up the New York based artist, Jon Burgerman who was selling these miniature boxes of mixed colored Jeff Koons doppelgangers in front of the Whitney during the Koons retrospective and grabbed him for a quickie interview.

First Morning

On my first morning in New Zealand we were something like eight hours out of sync and so waking up early was pretty easy. I went outside before dawn and was rewarded with this. I’ve seen a lot of beautiful sunrises and sunsets in Florida and this rated way up there on the awesome scale. Maybe it was just a bit of luck but it felt supernatural. And supernatural magic seemed to follow us each day, it’s hard to explain but while we were there it seemed very real. That is one trip you should put on your bucket list. I’m putting on my redo list.
