Imogen Poots - The Untitled Magazine - Issue 7
no exit | avery + adrian
[Avery shrugs, her gaze flitting up towards the girl next to her. Food’s never been a concern of hers, as long as it was edible and kept her awake when she was writing. Avery thinks for a second, deciding that taste is her least important sense. Unless someone was poisoning her and the only way she’d know was tasting it - though until now she doesn’t think anyone would do that. Maybe the kitchen staff would, they don’t seem to enjoy her not showing up for meals and asking for ones at strange hours of the day.]
I don’t really care, as long as it’s not cold. I mean, I’d rather not eat jell-o, it feels too weird on my mouth. Am I- am I supposed to have a favorite food?
[Her hand makes a particularly loud crack and she glances up at the girl in-front of her’s face, staring at her forehead. Hopefully she didn’t hear that.]
[Adrian hates this mousy type, all timid and frightened to look at her. She isn't that frightening, is she? It isn't as though she'll bite the girl. No way. That was gross. When Adrian was performing...activities, she always preferred for the other to be bled rather than drink straight from them. That was it wasn't as personal. It made the other person less real--it made the weight of what she was doing a bit lighter. Adrian truly misses it. Especially now. The redhead seems like the type that would be into strange things like that.
Her question is stupid. As of late, Adrian's had no patience for small talk. In fact, she despises it. She had always tried to make conversation with Lara and had always been ignored, so now she is taking the hint and completely obliterating it from her daily life. No more talking about the weather or bothering people with information about cute, furry little animals.
Instead, she moves closer to the girl, a curious smile on her face. The other seems as though she'd be uncomfortable with it, as she's currently avoiding looking Adrian in the face, and this is the perfect opportunity to have a bit of fun.]
You can eat whatever you want here, you know. When I say whatever, I mean it. Like, totally whatever you want. All the weird stuff.
[She smiles like she knows a secret. Truthfully, she's making all of this up. There is some proof to it, though. Stonebridge gives really strange food at times. They had prepared her a weird thing called ceviche. She ended up spitting it out all over the table.]
Y'know, I asked for a cow heart once. Rare. They were really eager to let me have it 'cuz it was taking up a lot of space in the fridge.
careless talk | session with lourdes & adrian
Lourdes sat in her office, the windows cracked. The fresh spring air made the therapy office feel crisp and clean. Her legs crossed, one leg over the other, she opened up her notepad and set it next to her on the side table. the door was open. Her first session of the day and she was calm. It was a new patient, this one, and Lourdes was very excited to meet them. Unfortunately, she’d yet to learn their name.
A cup of tea was steaming next to her notepad. Lourdes picked it up and took a sip.
Just as she took it away from her perfectly lined lips, her newest patient entered the room. “Ah, good morning.” She gestured to the chair in front of her and asked, “Will you take a seat, please?” A smile graced her features. “My name is Doctor Lourdes Deleon. You can call me Dr. Deleon, Dr. Lourdes, or just Lourdes - whichever suits you.”
With the hand of a nurse on her shoulder, shaking her awake, Adrian sat up with a start. The woman was telling her that she had completely slept through lunch and that she had an appointment in ten minutes. She groaned loudly. She didn't want to see the doctor--she didn't want anything to do with her. Adrian's track record with doctors was absolutely awful. Julius had found her too difficult to work with as she kept becoming distracted with the perfectly placed photographs of his family on his desk and how she cried when he became stern. Peter was just...Peter. She didn't want to think about that. She had to hurry.
Adrian allowed the nurse to brush her hair for a few minutes before escorting her to the office. Due to the whole pie-in-the-face incident with Lara, Adrian had to be escorted wherever she went, including the bathroom, which was awful.
She gave the nurse a glare when they reached the office. "I'll do this alone," she hissed.
The woman's office was nice and clean and embodied the woman at the desk. She seemed poised, refined and nice. Everything Adrian wasn't. Great. Just another person she'd have to enrage and be kicked out of their office. Adrian took the seat across from her, allowing herself to follow the rules for once. She didn't want to be kicked out now.
"'Kay, Lourdes. I take it you know who I am. Brat, punk, the b-word, whatever the other doctors call me," she said, sucking her teeth. Adrian hadn't heard anyone call her that, but she assumed it had been said.
Starlight || Dylan + Adrian
[He doesn’t want to hurt her, and he’d rather skin his knee than have her trip, but that doesn’t mean he’s useless. Dylan knows he’s capable of taking action if he gets very uncomfortable, like with that Ana girl - who, since then, has left - but if approached properly, he won’t care. After all, Jackson’s done all sorts of things to him, and he really doesn’t care.
Hearing her speak, he gives an awkward grin. She hasn’t seen him, but she seems so certain that he’ll at least know something about her. Too bad that he doesn’t - she seems like a nice girl. Not his type, given the whole girl part, but still nice.]
No, sorry. I don’t really know a lot of people, and I spend most of my time in the hallways or the gardens, so I don’t overhear a lot either. Sorry.
[Did he just apologize twice? Dylan wasn’t sure why, but he had. Maybe he just wants to make up for the fact that he has no idea who she is. Yes, that has to be it. He just feels bad because he doesn’t know her, and she’s so sure he does.]
[Oh. Her lips purse together, obviously unsatisfied with his answer. Fine. Whatever. She tries her hardest to make it seem like it doesn't bother her, but it's all in vain. She is Adrian--she knows everyone knows her. She's hell on earth (or so she's heard a nurse or five say). It isn't like she acts incorrigible on purpose--she's conditioned to be that way. All the years of people catering to her every whim couldn't have been that good for her. She wasn't to blame. It was everyone else for treating her so damn kindly.
Maybe it isn't her this time. Maybe this kid is a loner. She used to be that way, too, she she can sort of understand. The kids would tease her and berate her all day long so she'd lock herself away. Yes, that's got to be it. He's just a hermit. He doesn't want to get to know others, so it isn't her.]
Well, you know me now. And if you don't know anyone else, you're very lucky that I'm the first person you have ever met. That way you can't hear about all the nasty stuff I have done.
[Well, she's not going to hide it. She's sort of proud of the things she's done.]
Have you ever done any nasty stuff? Since we're friends and all now, I think you can tell me.
Starlight || Dylan + Adrian
[He tries to avoid looking too awkward, shoving his hands in his pockets to give himself something to do. It’s not like he’s going to just walk away - not until the conversation’s over - so he has to deal with this for a while. He’s used to feeling awkward, though, so he’s gotten a little better at hiding it. At least he doesn’t just blush and turn away anymore.]
I could’ve let you kiss me, or I could’ve pushed you away and risked hurting you. I know we’re in a nuthouse and all, but I’m not violent; I’d feel bad if you tripped and fell.
[He’s always preferred to take the pain for other people, even if it means he’ll go through more suffering than they would have. Dylan can’t help it; he just feels so responsible. Besides, he’s the ugly one; he deserves whatever he gets.
It’s a rather out-of-the-blue thought, but he realizes that he hadn’t even introduced himself yet. Being the way he is, he can’t help but feel bad. That was rude, and completely inappropriate of him.]
I’m Dylan, by the way. It’s nice to meet you.
[That is so sweet. So darn sweet. This is the first person here that doesn't want to hurt her! She can't help but be a little bit disappointed, though. That means he's lame. That mean's he's predictable--that she'll know every little thing he does right before he does it. Yuck. That's Adrian's least favorite type of person. Sure, she like security like everyone else, but what's life without a little frailty? Certainly not a life she wants to live.
So strange. He'd rather suffer than speak up. So weak. She guesses that's why he's here: because he's so weak. Lots of people here are. So is she, at times, but she wouldn't dare say it aloud unless she had to. There only needs to be one weak person in a group of two, and it doesn't have to be her this time.
Good. She needs that. Lara took her strength from her and she needs to get it back somehow. A wild, crazy idea passes through her mind--one that she's tried so hard to suppress, but it makes its way out anyway. She misses what used to make her strong. No. He'd never go for it.]
Oh. Whatever. I'm Adrian. I've never seen you around here before, y'know. I'm sure you've seen me. Or heard of me. Or know why I'm here. Something like that, yeah?
Starlight || Dylan + Adrian
[Dylan’s head hurts. He wants her to stop talking, but it’s not like he’ll do anything about it. After all, he’s not violent - not intentionally. Maybe she’ll just stop talking to him if he listens silently. It works for him, sometimes, but not every time.
He hadn’t realized that she was going to kiss him again, and when she does, he can’t help but start panicking - in his mind, of course. If he were to physically flail or something of the sort, he might hurt her, and he doesn’t want that. Instead, he submits to the kiss, all the while trying to figure out how to get out of it.
Maybe he doesn’t have to get out of it. She’s only talking about kissing, after all. Besides - when he denied her the kiss to the cheek, she went for his lips; if he denies her again, who knows how far she’ll go.
Once the kiss has gone on long enough, he pulls away, looking embarrassed. How to explain himself—? Oh. He could always tell the truth.]
I like kisses, but . . not from girls. You get what I mean?
[Dylan’s not good at being subtle, and he knows it. It’ll either seem completely vague, or he’s just blunt - there’s no in between. If she doesn’t get what he means, he’ll just have to come out with it and say he’s gay.]
[He doesn't what? Doesn't like kisses from girls? Who doesn't like kisses from girls? Adrian likes kisses from girls. Well, she likes kisses from dogs on the street, too, so she it doesn't really matter. So he's gay. How boring, limiting yourself. She can't imagine it for a second. Adrian doesn't even want to think about only liking boys--they're so sweaty and stinky she'd rather stay away from them altogether. Yuck.
However, this boy is not sweaty and stinky. Not right now, anyway. Actually, he's quite nice. He let her kiss him, at least, and that was a start. Most people here don't want to kiss Adrian, and when they do, they really do. It makes her uncomfortable knowing that some people don't have barriers. Her limits are weak, but at least they're there. Adrian knows of cannibals and rapists and...other things she'd rather not think about. It makes her feel good about herself, knowing that she's never done anything bad like that. Sure, she's done awful things, but nothing quite like that. Never.
Whoa. Too dark for National Kissing Day.]
I guess I know what you mean. I don't get it, but I know. Why'd you let me kiss you then? You should have punched me in the face or spit on me. Other people would have.

Hush || Lara and Adrian
[Great. Adrian is making another scene. Why does it always have to be a scene with Adrian? They can never have a moment of quiet—can never have a moment of peace. She always has to whine or cry or screech in order to get others to pity and coddle her. God. She’s a grown woman, but she acts like a petulant child. Lara feels like she’s the only one who treats Adrian like the twenty year old she is.
It would be better to change the subject, so Adrian will shut the hell up, but the blonde has pissed Lara off. She isn’t about to play nice and back down simply because Adrian is drawing attention their way.]
What’s the matter, Adrian? Why can’t I talk about your mommy, huh? She didn’t love you? Did she leave you and your boring father? I mean, I don’t blame her. There’s no reason to stick around. She was probably in a loveless marriage. She didn’t love her child, didn’t want to take care of her, so she left. It’s only reasonable.
I said not to talk about it.
[Adrian rarely gets this angry. Yes, she's quite the complainer, but she hardly gets enraged and when she does, it isn't a pretty sight. It isn't that she's particularly dangerous or anything. Her face does get all red and flushed, though. If she's trying to make an argument it never helps her case. She really hopes her cheeks aren't flushed, but she can feel how hot her face is getting. How embarrassing. Lara's face isn't red at all. That's so unfair. How does the brunette manage to say so stoic all while Adrian is cherry red and stuttering?
Cherry red, huh?
Adrian glances down at the pie and within seconds it is in Lara's face, covering her beautiful cheekbones and expensive clothing. Oh, no. She really wishes she hadn't done that, no matter how good it felt. Oh, no. She's going to be locked up in ISO until her hair turns grey.
She looks over her shoulder and sees the guard charge at her.]
Starlight || Dylan + Adrian
[Dylan’s standing in the hallway, trying to gather his thoughts. Jackson’s a real freak - he wants Rory to come back, especially since his roommate left without warning. A goodbye would’ve been nice, but he’d gone back to their room one day to find his old roommate’s stuff gone. It hadn’t been long before the emptiness was filled by Jackson’s stuff, and he wishes it had just stayed empty.
Distracted by his own thoughts, he jumps when he feels a kiss on his cheek, immediately pushing his ‘attacker’ away and holding them at arm’s length. It takes a moment for his initial panic to subside, at which point he simply finds himself confused. Who is she? What does she want? Her question answers neither of those things.]
Um, no. What’s today?
[Admittedly, she's a bit taken aback by being pushed away. Patients weren't especially reserved, but she never expects it when it comes her way. Why, Lara had just tried to smother her days before. That had been partly Adrian's fault, though. She shouldn't have cuddled the brunette without her permission, but if anyone asks her, she'll say she heard Lara sigh contently when she wrapped her arms around her waist. What was she so worried about? Hugging your very good friend in the dark at night is a normal thing to do.
Isn't it?
Oh, well. It was no matter now. Adrian's far more concerned with the distressed look on the individual's face. Is it that bad to be kissed? She believes it's a sign of affection. She wants to be kissed every single day.]
Well, it's my own National Kiss Day. Everyone gets a kiss, including doctors and nurses and even the janitor, if he wants one.
I feel like you don't like them, though. Everyone likes kisses. I think you're wrong for not liking them. Here, let me give you another so you can see how right I am--
[And this time, she goes for the mouth.]
Hush || Lara and Adrian
[Lara watches her roommate’s disgustingly graphic method of eating. Why does Adrian always have to be like this—so uncouth and childish? If there weren’t so many guards here, Lara would reach over the table and slap her until she learned her manners.]
How could your mother not have taught you this? Who the hell were you raised by? Wolves?
Fine. That’s fine. I can just go back to ignoring you if that’s what you want.
[Adrian, in actuality, had been ignoring Lara, but that’s just a small detail. Who cares?]
Anyway, I’m not gaining weight. You and I both know that. There’s no use in trying to insult me that way. I’m confident enough in my looks not to be bothered by your childish insults.
[Had her weight gain really been that apparent? She’d only gained a pound or two. She’d hoped the weight had gone to her breasts, but it seems Adrian thinks otherwise.]
[Her chest tightens at the mention of her mother. No, she hadn't known the woman long enough to form a connection that would last forever, but she had known her a little. She remembers her in different ways. She sees her mother when that new woman with hair like hers walks down the halls too quickly for Adrian to see her face. The flash of blonde hair is enough to bring back all types of hazy memories that Adrian only knows of because her father told her them.
He doesn't talk about her often. Hell, he doesn't talk to Adrian often.
Still, it is enough to make her upset. Her chin locks up and for a moment, it looks as though she won't say anything mean to Lara, but that moment passes rather quickly.]
Why would you say that? Why would you--why would you say that? That's only happened like...six times in the history of forever. You know I wasn't. You know. I told you, you mean, mean girl. Don't talk about my mother. Don't.
[She knows she's talking loudly enough for the guard to overhear, but she's not being violent. Not yet, anyway.]
Do you hear me? Don't. Say. That.
Library || Charlotte & Adrian
Charlotte found herself feeling guilty. She wished she could help her, but she had always been a stickler for the rules and couldn’t bring herself to break them, even though her heart went out to the girl. Still, she wished there was something she could do. She thought briefly of recommending to Adrian’s doctor that he allow her a phone call, but after Charlotte’s horrid encounter with Dr. Cole she wasn’t exactly eager to give her opinions to another doctor again.
"I am truly sorry. I can’t imagine how difficult that must be for you and I wish I could do something to help…" She was sure Adrian could find some member of staff who wasn’t so uptight, but suggesting she ask a guard hardly seemed like an ethical move on Charlotte’s part.
"Is there… anything else I can do for you?" She hoped she could at least be of use in some way. It was almost impossible for her to watch Adrian suffer and not be able to do anything about it.
No. No. That wouldn't do. She couldn't deal with that. At home, all her needs were met within hours. This was...this was completely unfair. She had said the dreaded word please, for god's sake. That certainly meant something, didn't it? The word felt dirty leaving her mouth, but it had to be said. The nurse had a kind face, and that meant she respected kind requests, didn't it? It had to. It just had to.
She shut her eyes for a moment, thinking of all the ways their interaction could go.
Her palms oozed sweat at the sheer thought of someone else's blood passing her lips. It had only been Adrian's for quite a long time--chewing on her fingers until they bled or biting at her lips until the skin ripped and the crimson liquid flooded her mouth. The idea of a bloodtype other than her own drove her wild. Her breath was shallow. She'd have to beg for it.
"Please, please, please, Nurse," she pleaded, gripping the woman's hands in her own moist ones. "Just for a second. One second." She scooted closer towards the woman, squeezing her hands in her clenched fists. "I won't tattle on you--I pinky swear. One second, please."
Bless this mess We tried our best That’s all that we can do…
Hush || Lara and Adrian
[What’s happening? Is this supposed to be an olive branch—Adrian’s way of apologizing for ignoring Lara for so long? Well, Lara doesn’t forgive her. Her idiotic roommate is going to have to do a lot better than that to get back into Lara’s good graces.
She watches the blonde stuff her face with pie like some uncouth barbarian. Adrian has always had a penchant for sweet things. Lara only knows this because Adrian has sneaked into Lara’s bed on multiple occasions with a sweet in hand. Sticky-fingered little scoundrel. Lara wakes up with crumbs in her hair and powdered sugar in her sheets.
No, she doesn’t miss Adrian one bit.]
What are you doing here, Adrian? Have you finally come to apologize to me?
[Her eyebrow quirks upward. Why would she be the one to apologize? Adrian isn't the one that tried to smother Lara, is she? No, really, Lara is making her confused. Did she try to hurt her or something? Besides the obvious jibe about her weight, which Adrian doesn't really mind. She was only saying it to be a bit rude, for the brunette had said something mean first. Is that what Lara is insinuating? That Adrian apologize for the comment about her weight?
Before speaking, she slides another spoonful of the calorie-laden, cherry goodness in her mouth, careful to lick the spoon in Lara's direction. No. She isn't going to apologize. No way, Jose.]
Well, it isn't my fault that you're packing on the pounds lately. Are you...I dunno, stress-eating, or something? You should talk to Dr. Blackburn about whatever's making you worried. Stop with the pies and the chocolate covered strawberries--they actually have lots of calories, Lara.
[She smiles and drops the spoon back in the sugary mixture, pushing the pie towards the girl.]
Tell it, "no." You deserve better than pie.
Hush || Lara and Adrian
[Lara is surprised to see her roommate before her, but even more, she’s surprised that Adrian’s talking to her. It’s been silence in their room for the past week or so. Adrian must be mad at her. How petty.
In the past few days, Lara found herself tempted to say something to the blonde, but she quickly reconsidered. She didn’t want Adrian to think she missed her. She doesn’t.
She slides the half-eaten pie across the table, dropping her spoon in it, so a small spatter of filling falls onto the table.]
Cherry. But you can have it. It’s ruining my diet. Some of us actually care about our figures.
[That was meant to hurt Adrian's feelings, wasn't it? Her appearance was of no true concern to her--at home, in most cases, she needed to be reminded to bathe and allowed her staff to do it for her. She was far too busy to worry about the way she looked. Luckily, she had someone to worry for her at home. She has that at Stonebridge, too. Even moreso, really, with all the nurses fussing over her all day long, pinning her hair into pretty updos like a doll. She doesn't mind. Less work on her end.
Adrian dips the spoon into the filling and brings it to her lips, humming in satisfaction when the sugar fills her mouth. Sugar is usually banned on her diet, but since no one's around to watch her, it doesn't matter.
She is still standing, keeping the distance between Lara and herself. She won't give in. Lara did wrong--she's going to apologize. She has to.]
Yes, you're right. You shouldn't eat this--lots of calories, I think. Can't be good for you. Tastes yummy. I don't like the crust, though, but it seems you ate most of that already.
Library || Charlotte & Adrian
Charlotte felt very uncomfortable. Adrian was much too close for comfort. She couldn’t stop herself from scooting farther away, but tried to play it off as though she was merely repositioning herself in an effort to get more comfortable. Whether or not the girl noticed Charlotte had no idea.
She admittedly felt bad when Adrian mentioned missing her father, but not bad enough to break the rules. “I know it must be difficult to be away from your father, and I’m sorry that you seem to be struggling with homesickness, but I cannot permit you to use my mobile. However,” she was quick to continue, “I believe you can make arrangements for a phone call home. Perhaps talking to your doctor would be a good idea?”
It was probably wishful thinking on Charlotte’s part that Adrian would be satisfied with this response, but she felt like it was a valid suggestion.
No such luck. Why was everyone around here so strict? Peter wouldn't allow her to stay late after his session to watch him file through papers; the chef, Esteban, wouldn't make her the pink lemonade she had requested instead of the standard, ugly yellow; this nurse wouldn't let her even touch the phone. God. Did all old people hate her?
She held in a sigh. Acting like a spoiled brat certainly wouldn't help her case. Did this nurse have a weakness? Could she play into it? She obviously didn't enjoy physical closeness, that was clear, so the whole seduction business wouldn't go over well with her. If she had tried that, she was sure she would find herself in ISO with tear stained cheeks and even less privileges. Adrian detested ISO--its cold, white walls did nothing for her behavior and only produced negative thoughts and screaming matches with whoever walked by and happened to look inside.
She couldn't deal with that now. No way, no how.
Instead, she gazed at the woman with a well-practiced, faux sadness. She had almost replicated the real emotion perfectly.
"I'm sorry for asking. He just--my doctor isn't fond of me whatsoever. He won't allow me to make phone calls if I've misbehaved, and with my...disorder, that happens quite often. I just--...haven't spoken to my daddy in months," she whispered. God. Peter would be pissed if he found out, but that wouldn't going to happen, would it?
