Here writing itself enters the labor. To write is to force vagueness toward shape. The sentence becomes an instrument of refusal. It refuses inflation, evasion, and the narcotic of untested feeling. Thought set into language is already made answerable to proportion. One may still lie in writing, but one cannot write seriously without also discovering where one is less exact than one imagined.

We. The word reached him with more force than she could have known. She said it as if it were an old habit, a word that had always been easy to shape. As if the road ahead could hold both of them. As if the dark thing waiting beyond the cursed trees might leave room for his hand in hers. Tav wanted to believe her. Gods, he wanted to believe her.

Tav had seen moonrise over temple glass, silver on still water, dawn breaking over the city after a night that should have killed them all. None of it prepared him for the way Shadowheart looked at him then, as though the hope inside her had found, for one impossible breath, a place where it was safe to live.

What is called altruism is seldom the erasure of the self. More often it is the extension of the self through attachment, identification, conscience, memory, duty, or chosen devotion. A person risks himself for another because the loss of that other would enter his own being as devastation. The Shadow-Cursed Lands were agony given weather. Every ruined threshold, every corpse that would not rest, every child’s toy left beneath blackened beams should have been accusation. For Shadowheart, they became something worse. They became evidence.

It was still a strange thing, this quietness. For so long, tenderness had been an enemy, the place where discipline loosened and the world found a way in. But the world felt very far away from this chair. Pressed against his warmth, listening to the soft, even breaths of the family they had built, the old instincts finally quieted. For tonight, at least, the armor could stay on the floor with her discarded clothes.
