The best way to “subvert expectations” is to make the audience think “Oh is this gonna happen? Is THIS gonna happen? Oh…that happened, of course…why didn’t I think of that?”

The perfect example being the part in The Clone Wars where the noble Jedi Obi-Wan is trying to talk a terrorist down from blowing up a whole spaceship in front of his pacifist girlfriend, while said pacifist girlfriend also has a gun pointed at the terrorist, and the terrorist is mocking both of them because there’s no way their principles will allow them to kill him even though it would save lives, so it’s a question about which one will become a cold-blooded killer…and then Anakin Skywalker just stabs him in the back to the tune of the Imperial March. 

That is how you subvert expectations because I dare you to find a single viewer who saw that coming.
