Hauenkua didn’t think that humans were entirely without hope, but this one was exceptionally stupid, wasn’t he? As Nam fires back at him with the insults, the corners of his mouth turn up, but this time it’s not an amused smile. It’s nothing less than predatory, showing hints of his true nature for the first time since being summoned to the academy.

… He’s never gotten the opportunity to carve up a human before, has he? He wonders if there’s any particular anatomical differences on the inside of human beings from his kind. It’s just such a shame they had to go ahead and drive themselves to extinction before he had the chance.

But now, he finally has it, all these weak little sacks of water and meat just walking around.

“You misunderstand,” Hauenkua replies in a silky voice, barely disguising his agitation. “I don’t want to be friends with you. As a teacher, I have to push you past your comfort zone. But, if you view me as nothing more than a garbage collector, maybe it’s time to take the garbage out.”

Lowering his voice, he utters one word:

“Run.”

He’d already established that the rules in place here were a bit loose, at least in the moral sense. Sure there were some in place that governed the day to day, but really, everyone seemed to be playing at keeping the peace. But at least  Hauenkua was a bit honest with himself. 

Well aware that he’d dug a hole, Nam figured that the only direction to keep going was down. Face set, he didn’t so much as wince when the professor growled at him. 

“What was there to misunderstand? You made it pretty clear how you feel about everyone who isn’t, well, you. Not sure why a lesser being like me irritates you so much.” 

This was usually when a sense of self preservation would kick in, but he’d heard that resurrection was a thing here.. So honestly, even if worse came to worse, at least it wouldn’t be permanent. And the last thing he wanted to do was beg to be let off. 

“Anyways, go ahead and show how great and powerful you are I guess. I won’t waste out times with a chase.”

“Oh, I just…I tend to ramble…so before I know it, I’m giving my full name,” she laughed sheepishly. She could blame it on her upbringing, but honestly the village was so small and everyone knew everyone else. But then again, maybe that had contributed to her nervousness around strangers–after all, visitors had been few and far between. It had taken her quite a few months to get to know everyone in the seaside town she settled in after leaving. “It’s nice to meet you though, Nam!”

Though the smile faded from her face, as did much of the color in her face at his next words. “Ahh…just my luck..” she whined quietly, cursing the hallways. If they had their own will, then it must have been mischievous. Why else would whatever magic force confound the poor students in such a way?! She bit her lip, hoping she’d at least packed her homework in her bag from last night. But honestly with the way her day was going, she wouldn’t be surprised if something else went wrong.

“There will definitely be a lot of begging..” she grimaced, letting out a heavy sigh. “I wonder if I’d be able to do an extra credit project to make up for it..” But Nam’s words did make her feel a little hopeful. If she got there in enough time, there was still a chance, and she could still possibly turn her homework in. Granted, she didn’t trust the hallways at all anymore, but maybe there was a trick to it, a way around the maze-like halls. 

And just like that, Nam provided the solution. “R-Really!? You’d do that? I mean, I hate to be a bother or anything but..I’d really appreciate it!” Honestly, she could probably cry tears of joy in that moment. “I’d pay you back, for sure!”

“Extra credit? You know, maybe I should ask for some too while we’re at it. She’s caught be nodding off a few times so I might not be in her good graces at the moment.”

“And no problem; I was probably going to go take a nap anyways, nothing too important. Maybe you come in clutch for me someday when I miss class or something.” He added with a laugh, but knew that the probability of needing someone to bail him out was very likely. “But entirely up to you, I don’t want to make you feel like you owe me or anything.” 

But with introductions squared away, and time ticking by, he darted behind Edie and steered her towards the staircase. A quick scan forward, and it seemed like the stairs wouldn’t be making any funny changes, so they started climbing. 

Stairs weren’t his favorite, and to keep from thinking about the dozens of sets that they’d have to climb, Nam decided he was feeling a bit chatty. 

“So Healing Arts. I take it that you’re a healer? Well, maybe that’s a bit self explanatory..”

“Oho, a dare?” 

Now he was contractually obligated to prove her wrong, even if it were just for the sheer spite of it all. 

“If you don’t think I can stay up for 3 consecutive days then you’re wrong.” Taking a sip from the mug in his hand, Nam drained it of its contents before slamming it a bit dramatically back on the table. 

“Catch me passed out in the dining hall three days from now, ready to prove to you that I was right and you were wrong.”

“Now that’s just cruel.” Trying to keep from whining, Nam tried to chip away the ice block keeping his right foot stuck to the floor. “I really can’t make an argument to you besides ‘I can’t feel this foot anymore, please free me’ honestly-.”

Might was good enough, she reasoned. It was more hopeful then the other answers she’d gotten so far…which had just been straight up “no” so it couldn’t hurt. Still, the realization she’d blurted that out without introducing herself first was a little embarrassing. 

Her cheeks flushed and she dipped her gaze, clearing her throat awkwardly. “Ah, sorry about that,” she laughed nervously. “I’m Edie, Edie Hargrave.” She stealthily checked her hands, making sure there was no dirt on them before she extended one for a handshake. 

“I missed my class today because of the hallways…so I just wanted to make sure I don’t miss any homework or anything..” She grimaced slightly and scratched the back of her neck. “I don’t think the professor would accept that as an excuse so…best to be prepared, right?”

Well, she seemed friendly. And a bit more down to earth than most of the other.. characters he’d met so far. Honestly, the sizes of the egos of some people here were almost enough to merit their own gravitational pull. Smiling, he grasped the hand Edie offered, giving it a firm shake. 

“Pleased to meet you, I’m Nam. Are.. we doing last names too? Nam Song.” He quickly added before freeing their hands. 

At the mention of homework though, he grimaced. “Just more chapter summaries, and we did turn something in, ooh..” That wasn’t good. Checking his watch, he noted that their professor’s office hours were still open. Or at least, they should be. Placing a hand on her shoulder, he looked towards the flight of stairs that would lead to Professor Kuja’s office. Looking back at her, Nam pointed towards their destination. 

“Listen. If you run, you can still make it to Kuja’s office hours. And maybe if you beg, you’ll still be able to turn in this week’s chapter summaries.” And honestly, a good sob story, or in this case a fairly valid excuse, usually did the trick. But didn’t Edie just mention having a rough time navigating the halls? Frowning, Nam wondered if she’d be able to make it to the office in one shot. 

Not sure if he was overstepping his boundaries, he continued anyways. “I can help guide you over if you’d like. And the notes for today, I can let you borrow those too if you’d like.”

Firing a finger gun in case his pun was missed, he carefully opened the door and slipped into class, hoping that Whitley would follow his lead.

…This school was a maze, plain and simple. Thanks to the constant shifting leading her around in absolute circles, she had totally missed her Healing Arts class. She’d been able to find her way to her others. But the only problem was finding out what she’d missed. She was pretty sure the professor wouldn’t accept getting lost in the hallways as a valid excuse, so it was best to be prepared…and hope the other classes were caught up to each other if she couldn’t find someone in her own class. 

She realized she probably looked a bit strange, frantically looking around with a cat perched on her shoulder, asking just about anyone she could find if they had Healing Arts, but she hadn’t had any luck. 

A sigh left her lips and she hung her head, cursing her luck. Of course, she could probably be okay just not doing anything but she wanted to make sure. That in itself was the problem. Alister’s paw tapped her head, getting her attention. She blinked and looked up, seeing someone else coming their way. Quickly thanking her familiar, she rushed forward, trying not to look quite as panicked as she felt.

“Hey! Um, this is sudden, but do you take Healing Arts any period?”

With classes finally over for the day, Nam looked forward to doing absolutely none of the work that was assigned to him. After all, it was a Friday, and who did work on Fridays? That was something that Sunday evening could deal with. But even as he absent mindedly strolled through the corridors, he couldn’t miss the red haired girl charging his way. He couldn’t help noting her green eyes, a shade lighter than his. 

She had the frantic look of someone who’d missed class and was just looking for someone to fill them in. He was all too familiar with the look, having worn it on his own face more often than not. He was ready to give her a hand, and laughed a bit internally when it seemed like his guess about her situation was right.

“Hm, I might be taking it. Who’s asking?”

Hauenkua lets out a loud whine as Nam refuses to go on the hike. Why don’t people ever want to do things with him? What’s wrong with him? Flattening his ears a bit, he crouches down so that he’s face-level with the human, he clears his throat.

“Oh, sorry, I’m not used to dealing with your primitive species; let me explain myself. See, when I say ‘I expect to see you there,’ it isn’t a casual invite. It’s a command. Now I know that Homo sapiens aren’t particularly hardy, or long-lived, or strong, or fast, or smart, but surely you’re not so bland and unpopular enough to have no engagements on a Saturday night at all?”

He smiles and taps his chin with a long, spindly finger, slender as a willow branch. “You know, Nam, when I was your age I too was fortunate enough to attend a top-tier educational institute such as this one! I had this classmate who never went on class trips, or participated in clubs, or bothered to build any semblance of a social life whatsoever. Since he had no resume builders no one wanted to take him once we graduated. He’s a trash collector now. Go on the night hike.”

Unflinchingly looking back at the face that was now level with his, he didn’t feel so much offended than he was annoyed. This professor just, really enjoyed hearing the sound of his own voice didn’t he? Hauenkua went on and on throwing out an unnecessary string of synonyms while insulting him. But at this point, Nam found it childish to argue back. But then, he wasn’t anything if not petty, and he wasn’t above sinking to the other’s level. 

“Actually, I’m extremely bland and unpopular. It’s too bad that you are too, seeing as you have to resort to begging a shut in like me to hang out with you.”

Suddenly finding his hands incredibly interesting, Nam casually ran a thumb over his fingernails, not bothering to look the professor in the face anymore. But he did finally peer up when Hauenkua mentioned trash collector. Raising an eyebrow, Nam feigned interest.

“Oh, are we talking about you in the third person now? Calling yourself a trash collector is a bit... harsh isn’t it? Must be awful having to pick up garbage like me, huh?”

Lunch Time Shenanigans

  Shun wasn’t really in the best mood today. Well he usually isn’t any good mood any day but today he’s in a more bitter mood than average. So when it came time to lunch and the person in front of him happens to take the last pudding cup he wasn’t happy one bit. He waits til they were seated and not looking before using his abilities to steal their pudding cup and place it on his own tray. He didn’t care if other students seem to notice. He just wanted a pudding cup.

He really needed to learn how to start sleeping on a regular schedule. Going to bed at odd hours wasn’t cutting it, and Nam found himself dozing off more often than usual. But that’s just what you get for staying up until sunrise trying to catch up on work put off until the last possible second. 

Now, the more sleep deprived he was, the more irrational he tended to be. But as he watched his pudding cup slowly float away from him and land on another’s tray, Nam didn’t find it in himself to let it go without a fight. 

Fixing the offending psychic was a blank stare, he bluntly pointed at the stolen object and demanded it back. “Buddy. I’m tired but I’m not blind. Unhand the pudding cup and no one needs to see me have a breakdown over dessert.”

“Going professional sounds like a neat step up. And you aren’t going to be starved for scenery here at least.” Which was true; strange as it was at Hiraeth, it was undeniable that the place was captivating in its own way. 

He couldn’t help laughing at Prompto’s bit at teasing his friends. “I see that being a bit mean to your friends is a universal sign of friendship.” Though, he personally made an effort to tease everyone he met. “Just remember, blackmail’s probably looked down on in most places.” 

Lacing his fingers behind his head, Nam ventured to ask. “Is this your main thing, photography? Or do you have anything else going on too?”

  It been a few days since that school wide test. Blake had to say it was fun but also very overwhelming considering she ended up being one of the students trapped under the Succubus’s spell. For the most part Blake worked with her team but she often was rather independent as well and liked to scour alone. That’s probably why she got under the Succubus’s spell. However, she does remember one time she really could have used a teammate’s help. Spotting a said teammate across the courtyard Blake decides to call out to them. “Nam! Hey. How are you? The last few days was crazy wasn’t it?” she asks as she approaches them.

After the whole demon fiasco, Nam thought that it might be a good idea to sleep off the next twenty years and see what happened when he woke up. But unsurprisingly, the school returned to business as usual, classes in session and no one so much as blinking twice at the return to normalcy. Or, as close to that you could get here. 

The group he’d been sticking with during that ordeal had broken up fairly quickly, so he hadn’t expected to see another member of their party so soon. Spotting Blake heading towards him, he grinned and waved. 

“I’m alive after all that, so that’s something right? But how about you? I kind of, wasn’t much help when you ended up being put under that spell and all..”
