Adventurers, you say! The Misfits, episode 6

Last session, The Misfits settled into their new tavern, finally getting it mostly fixed up, thanks to a gift from Volo. Tally, owner of The Bent Nail down the road, delivered their furniture and was convinced to fix up the bar for free, provided they advertise for him and share some free drinks. He was promptly commissioned for a wooden job board to post in the tavern. Renaer Neverember, at a request of the Harpers who had approached the Wizard Mikleo and Bard Faux, gifted the group with tickets to the opera. The group dressed up and there, the two met to hear of the Harper’s group and inquired for more information. Killian, the drow sorcerer, was approached by the Bregan D’aerthe and completed the first quest through a genius plan of manipulating manners at the opera, sneezing next to a Lord and staring at him until he offered her a handkerchief. She delivered it to a small tiefling that evening. Finch and Escanor got excited with the alcohol and Finch played dice hungover with the ghost of Leif the next morning, who seems to be charmed by the young wood-elf rogue. When the group was roused, Faux and Mikleo set out to gather intelligence from a talking horse and relay to the Harper’s, effectively gaining more insight on the faction. While Faux seemed enchanted by the idea of the group, putting her with fellow bards and secret keepers regardless of their more ‘good’ nature, Mikleo wished there were more arcane factions in town. Killian officially joined the Bregan D’aerthe and Finch and Escanor were sent a letter by an old acquaintance to meet at the Yawning Portal. There, they found The Snail, who approached them with a small favor for the Zhentarim. After tracking down and killing an elf-murderer from the Xanathar, the pair returned back to report and were met with offers to become a part of the faction.

I added in 3 new DM techniques that really worked tonight -

1) I responded to more things with a Matt Mercer “you can certainly try” response (I had a bad habit of not allowing them to try to do impossible things, and now I let them try and fail)

2) I said Matt Mercer’s “good to know” more often when they tell me they’re doing something (even if it won’t impact anything) so they feel acknowledged

3) If they hesitate too long after I ask “what do you do?” I go on to describe several things they could possibly do from their position, but also leave it open-ended

There are some other things that I’ve already consciously tried to do as DM (after listening to a lot of professional DMs):

If a character does something, I describe it in florid, excited detail - “You step forward to attack, but the hag hisses and slithers away, so unfortunately, you miss”

If a player kills a monster, I ask them to describe how they do it (even brand new players leap at this chance) and they get applause from everyone

If a player is playing for the first time, invent a temporary character for them. This helps them have a jumping off point as they learn to play, and helps them feel less embarrassed and get used to playing a part.

Pre-roll initiative for all your monsters, and decide what spells or abilities they’re going to use before you start. Make sure you aren’t the one holding things up.

Decide what the NPCs want and what they’re hiding before the game starts

Write down tiny details to reincorporate into the story later to make the world feel more physical (was it raining? There’s mud now, it lets the players see invisible monster footprints). Keep track of things like time of day.

One time I did “Summon Water” inside a guys lungs and the GM allowed it because he had been playing for years and never seen anyone do that

Me “I can raise the temperature of a space by 5 degrees (Fahrenheit) per success” DM “Okay.” Me “And that’s 6 successes, so 30 degrees…” DM “Okay…” Me “And ‘inside the human body’ is a space, right?” DM “…I don’t like where this is going.” Me “So I’m going to raise the temperature inside his body 30 degrees.” DM “Yeah, so he’s dead now. He was fine, and then went through all the stages of heat stroke in half a second before his body went ‘No thank you’ and just shut off to stop it from being so hot. Good job.”
