The Wes + Cliff Project (names have been changed for anonymity)

I have an idea for a web series (mimics a regular TV show in format) that engages in a nuanced exploration of what it means to be a man in today’s world. The story is told mostly from a millennial’s point of view. Thanks to technology and the internet, millennials are faced with many unprecedented situations as we struggle to make our way as independent adults. My friend Wes and I are both at a crossroads in our lives and the show will frequently draw from our reality. He is 31 with two very young children, I am 25 and just starting grad-school in a new field, and we are both relatively new to Austin. Follow us as we struggle to establish and reconcile the changes to our identities in this new stage of life. Think of it like Curb Your Enthusiasm or Louie, but told from a younger point of view.

Desert Vision

One day I was wandering through the desert and I came upon an American Indian. When I asked the Indian if I was going the right direction, he shut his eyes and turned into a cactus. After a moment I decided to move on, but now, with every step I took - music would play. When I had taken enough steps and the song had played completely through, I turned back to see a family of hungry coyotes eating the cactus. I heard the Indian's voice whisper from nowhere, "Now you know."

Shipping Container Art Show

I have an idea for an art show. The show consists of 10 P.O.D.S or other large shipping containers inside of a large gallery or warehouse. Inside of each container are the belongings of a well developed persona. Some of the containers will be loosely packed and the viewer can actually go in and inspect the contents while other containers might be so full that they are closed, but one or more of the container's sides are made of plexi-glass or some other transparent material. For each container, the artists will ask themselves …

-Who is this person? Ex. Gerald Swanson

-What is their story? Ex. Gerald was a scientist that worked at the Los Alamos research facility.

-How old are they? Ex. 86

-What do/did they do for a living? Ex. Classified, but there are some hints

-Do they have a family? Ex. There is a framed picture of a college aged girl circa 1970s in the container. It might be his daughter, but where is the rest of the family? Mystery ensues.

-What things would they own? Ex. There is a handwritten note from Robert Oppenheimer in a desk drawer.

Fill the containers with rich and complex stories that are executed with a “Disney-level” attention to detail and atmosphere. Maybe the name of each piece is just where the package is going, like “Tallahassee to New York City” or “Santa Fe to Mobile”. Inspire people to think about what it would look like if their entire life was described by objects in a box.

Fade in-

The entire video is in slow motion and without any audio other than the song. Initially, the screen is filled with the faces of handsome floppy dogs running around and playing. As the shot widens, elements of destruction and chaos are slowly introduced into the frame (i.e. a flaming piece of wood flies through the frame in the background. Explosions.) Eventually you scale back to reveal that the dogs are running through a city in chaos. People are rioting and cars are burning, but thanks to their blissful ignorance, the dogs are just enjoying their last days on earth.

Womb Room

In the future, everyone will have a room in their house known as the “womb room”. The common womb room will consist of a small parlor area that people can use to get undressed or take their shoes off before crawling into a 3’ diameter hole that leads via tunnel into a small spherical room. The room is upholstered with a red quilt like fabric that is backlit by lights just outside of the sphere. White noise is pumped into the warm cozy sphere. See diagram.

Bear Encounter

The bear must have smelled the rich spiced meats that I kept in my pocket, for he was upon me in an instant. I managed to squeeze between a couple of large trees and escape to a nearby river. The bear was still after me, so I made the decision and took one last breath before I plunged into the icy green water. The rapids were unforgiving and the powerful river held me under as I slowly ran out of oxygen. When I could no longer control the impulse to inhale, I was shocked to find that I could breathe under the water. I didn’t have a chance to relax however, for instantly my head was ringing as my ears were filled with a deafening cacophony. I opened my eyes to see that I was surrounded by thousands of spawning salmon. I could hear the salmon screaming out for their love as the turbulent water gurgled their cries. The screams drove me mad until I passed out from the intensity. When I awoke, I was in a field with my head resting on the lap of a pretty girl. She asked me if I wanted to get ice cream. I had rocky road.

A discussion amongst cowpokes

As the scene opens, we see a group of grizzled old cowboys resting around a campfire. One of the men is eating some beans out of a pot with a wooden spoon, another is whittling a piece of wood with a big knife, and a third man is playing a sad country song on an acoustic guitar. After a moment, the man whittling stops what he is doing and takes a moment to question the poetic merit of one of the songs lines. The singer retorts with a witty quip designed to highlight the whittling mans ignorance in regards to 19th century nomenclature. The man eating beans declares, “You both know jack!” and then continues on to reveal a shockingly sophisticated analysis of the line. This sparks a 30 minute philosophical exploration that touches on subjects ranging from the need for progressive education reform to the secret to streak free windows.

A proud celebration

At my last birthday celebration, the piñata was a crude effigy of Insatiago, the demon god of drought. The vessel’s prize was a pile of cool fertile earth. We set upon the figure with sharpened sticks until the paper demon reluctantly spilled its prized cargo. Later that day we planted an apricot tree amongst the spoils.
